― Major Spielberg and his commanding officer remark on seeing KIDS fly overhead (Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah)

Major Spielberg (スピルバーグ少佐,   Supirubāgu Shōsa) is a U.S. military officer who appears in the 1991 Godzilla film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. He is implied to be the father of real-life filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

Name

Spielberg is named and referred to as a major during his sole scene in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, which is acted entirely in English. In the Japanese subtitles on the film's theatrical version, his name and rank are translated as スピルバーグ少佐 (Supirubāgu Shōsa, lit. "Major Spielberg"). Despite this, the 1991 book Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah Monster Complete Works refers to him as スピルバーグ軍曹 (Supirubāgu Gunsō), which would translate to "Sergeant Spielberg."[1]

History

Heisei era

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

Major Spielberg was stationed in the Marshall Islands during the Pacific War in 1944. When the Futurian time machine KIDS arrived from 1992, rocketing towards Lagos Island, Spielberg and his commanding officer concluded that it was extraterrestrial in origin. Major Spielberg offered to report the sighting, but his superior persuaded him not to, saying, "You can tell your son about it when he's born."

Trivia

  • Steven Spielberg's father Arnold did enlist in the United States military during World War II, although he was stationed in India.[2] Steven himself was not born until 1946.
  • A newspaper Kenichiro Terasawa reads at the beginning of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah mentions "kindhearted alien(s) like in Spielberg's E.T."[a] in relation to MOTHER's possible passengers.
