The 84Goji (84ゴジ) is the Godzilla suit design used in the 1984 Godzilla film, The Return of Godzilla.

Name

The 84Goji's name comes from the year the film it was featured in, The Return of Godzilla, came out (1984, because in Japan the film was just called Godzilla, and Godzilla did not face any other monsters), and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

Detail

Godzilla was revived in 1984 for the film The Return of Godzilla, this time returning to his menacing appearance, instead of the "hero" appearance used at the end of the original series. The 84Goji was made to closely resemble the original suit: Godzilla was again four-toed instead of three, his fangs and ears reappeared and his Template:Scutes were made large again too. The tail was made longer, and the eyes featured more white area in them.

The suit was massive, weighing in at 242 pounds, much more than the Godzilla suits used in the 1970's, which weighed about 88 pounds. Kenpachiro Satsuma took the place as Godzilla's suitmation actor for The Return of Godzilla, and would reprise the role until Godzilla vs. Destoroyah in 1995. Some of the scenes were not filmed with this suit, but other props, such as a 49 foot-tall foot model, a separate tail and most notably a gigantic 25-foot full Godzilla animatronic dubbed the "Cybot Godzilla." The Cybot did not function properly during filming and was relegated primarily to close-ups of Godzilla's head, while the suit was employed for most other action shots of Godzilla.

Due to problems with the mechanisms in the suit's eyes, Godzilla's eyes sometimes face away from each other, giving a somewhat comical appearance which wasn't intended by Toho. This is particularly apparent during close-ups of the suit, most notably during a scene where Godzilla stares down the Super X after rising back to his feet.

This suit was stolen from Toho a little while after The Return of Godzilla was released, and to this day nobody has been able to find the suit, or the culprit, though it is highly unlikely that the suit is currently intact, considering how long Godzilla suits normally last. However, the massive Cybot Godzilla remained in Toho's ownership, and was put on display in multiple film festivals around Japan.[1] The Cybot Godzilla's head was seen on display as recently as 2004, 20 years after the release of The Return of Godzilla.
