The AnimeGoji design was first shown on a poster for GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters. The AnimeGoji appears to closely resemble the LegendaryGoji, with a bulky body, a thick and short neck, large arms, jagged triangular dorsal plates, and a crocodile-like head with a relatively long snout. The biggest difference between this design and the LegendaryGoji is the appearance of his dorsal plates, which resemble a combination of the LegendaryGoji's plates and Godzilla's traditional maple-leaf shaped plates.
At first glance, the AniGoji generally resembles the GareGoji design, with a bulky body, a thick and short neck, large arms, jagged triangular dorsal plates, and a crocodile-like head with a relatively longer snout. The design's dorsal plates are larger than the GareGoji's, and more closely resemble the traditional maple leaf-shaped plates of past Godzilla designs. AniGoji has bluish green skin with a rough texture reminiscent of tree bark covering the entirety of his body. He has a very robust musculature, with his muscles visible through his skin and pronounced abdominal and pectoral muscles on his chest. His legs are long and slim compared to the GareGoji's pillar-like legs, while his feet are elongated and possess four claws, as do his hands. AniGoji's tail has a ridged underside, and ends with a pointed spear-like tip.

From the film's teaser trailer, a pair of spikes can be seen on this Godzilla's chin. His head appears more rounded and his neck thinner than the MonsterVerse Godzilla's.
The AniGoji design is used to depict both Godzilla Filius, a 50-meter subspecies derived from the cells of the original Godzilla, and Godzilla Earth, the original Godzilla which grows to a height of over 300 meters following his 20,000 year reign over the Earth's ecosystem. Godzilla Filius looks nearly identical to Godzilla Earth when he first appeared in 2030, with the exception of lacking the patch of spikes on the underside of his chin which resembles a beard.

According to the film's executive producer Yoshihiro Furusawa, this Godzilla has grown as a result of ruling over Earth's ecosystem for 20,000 years, and is the tallest onscreen incarnation of the character to date, even exceeding the size of Shin Godzilla.

The AniGoji (アニゴジ,   AniGoji) is the Godzilla design used in the 2017 Godzilla film GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters and its 2018 sequels, GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle and GODZILLA: The Planet Eater.

Name

AniGoji's name comes from anime (アニメ) and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

Development

Godzilla concept art

Trees were decided upon as the motif for the anime Godzilla's design after the key concept for this Godzilla was determined to be that it was the "peak of the evolution of life." According to co-director Kobun Shizuno, there were several reasons for this, including the fact that trees are currently the largest and most widespread organisms on Earth, that they are capable of living for thousands of years - "basically only requiring light and water" to survive, and that trees' hard and fibrous body tissues protected them while also supporting their enormous mass and volume. Moreover, actual trees possess trace elements in their biology and generate electrons when performing photosynthesis, allowing for a plant-based Godzilla to use powerful electromagnetic waves. "We expanded from the idea of if a plant had undergone super-evolution due to its cellular structure perhaps containing metallic elements, and its whole body became a power generator as a result," Shizuno explained. "I heard that at the top of the evolution of the Earth are actually plants. [sic] And in this 'planet of the monsters,' I thought Godzilla would be like a huge 'world tree' at the center of its unique environment."[1]

The anime Godzilla's design process was as follows: co-director Hiroyuki Seshita first drew concept sketches to determine the silhouette of the body and created variations of the face, especially the profile, based on different animals. After that, modeling director Mitsunori Kataama organized several interpretations, from which virtual maquettes were sculpted. Eiji Kawada designed the texture and color for Godzilla, reflecting the setting by adding accumulated moss, fine scratches and dirt. Finally, the CG model was rigged and readied for animation.[1]

Sculpting a 3D model for Godzilla

AniGoji is described as taking the basic, recognizable silhouette of Godzilla and combining it with the unique traits decided for the character for the anime works. Inspired by Kongōrikishi statues, the muscular element to Godzilla's appearance is meant to express its power as well as invoke the hugeness of trees, its status as the apex life form on Earth, and a deity-like presence. Rather than aiming for something anatomically accurate, this Godzilla is simply meant to be imposing.[1]

When drawing head profile concepts for Godzilla, features such as curls of hair, horns, Varan-like fins, and lower jaw spikes were sketched out for verification, though they were all dropped in favor of simple chin spikes for Godzilla Earth only.[2] The monster's deity-like blue eyes are meant to convey intelligence, "such as that of a philosopher."[1]

In the shaping of CG model maquettes for Godzilla, a process similar to molding with clay was used, where a general shape outline was defined first, and details were gradually added in.[1] Coloring of the model. Moss is featured in some concept maquettes' coloration, located in the back, the upper part of the dorsal plates, and "other places where the body doesn't rub" against other surfaces.

Detail
