The winged and eight-legged M.U.T.O.s from Godzilla (2014)

M.U.T.O. (an acronym for Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) is a designation used by the agency Monarch to refer to all monsters in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse. While most M.U.T.O.s tend to receive their own specific names from Monarch, they are all initially given this designation. In the comic Godzilla: Awakening, both Godzilla and Shinomura are referred to as "M.U.T.O." before being given their own unique names. The two antagonist monsters in the film Godzilla are only referred to as M.U.T.O.s, and do not have their own specific names.

Generally speaking, M.U.T.O.s are ancient superspecies that existed long before mankind ruled the Earth, and are abnormally large compared to most modern-day species. M.U.T.O.s such as Godzilla and the eight-legged and winged M.U.T.O.s inhabited Earth during a period where the planet's surface radiation levels were considerably higher than they are now. These M.U.T.O.s consumed this radiation as their food source, and retreated to the depths of the planet as this radiation declined, preferring instead to consume the planet's natural geothermal radiation. In Kong: Skull Island, Houston Brooks and William Randa propose that an entire ecosystem of M.U.T.O.s exists within hollow underground regions inside the Earth, with Skull Island acting as an emergence point for this ecosystem. A specific type of M.U.T.O. common on Skull Island is Florafauna, animals which have incorporated plant biology into their physiology and very genetic makeup.
