Skull Island: The Birth of Kong is a four-issue comic book miniseries from Legendary Comics, serving as both a prequel and a sequel to Legendary's film Kong: Skull Island, which ran from April 12 to November 22, 2017. It is written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Mohammad Yazid, credited as "Zid." A paperback collecting all four issues was released on December 12, 2017.

Description

"Both a sequel and a prequel to the film, the series tells the story of a secret team of Monarch operatives returning to Skull Island to discover the truth behind Kong and the island he is born to protect. In doing so, they unlock an ancient history of monster conflict, witness the primal war between Kong and an otherworldly ecosystem of deadly new creatures, and finally reveal how this lonely god became the last of his kind."

Development

Skull Island: The Birth of Kong was quietly announced through a January 2017 listing in PREVIEWSworld under the title "Kong Skull Island Off Comic Series," with Arvid Nelson listed as the writer and Zid as the artist. A listing for the second issue the next month identified it as "Skull Island Birth of Kong."[1] Neither listing included cover art, only a poster for Kong: Skull Island.

A ten-page preview of the first issue became available on comiXology for free on March 10, 2017.[2] The same preview was included in the March 2017 Loot Crate DX.

On April 7, 2017, Entertainment Weekly published an article revealing the cover art for the first issue.[3] At the same time, Legendary's social media accounts posted a trailer for the series.
