The Bell AH-1 Cobra is an American aerial gunship produced by Bell Helicopters (with Japanese examples produced under license by Fuji Heavy Industries) which was first featured in the 1989 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Biollante. Both the single-engined Cobra and twin-engined SuperCobra have appeared in the franchise.

History

Heisei era

Godzilla vs. Biollante

Several AH-1s were deployed by the JGSDF to Wakasa Bay after Godzilla was infected by the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria, as part of the plan to incapacitate Godzilla with it. They fired on him using their mounted machine guns and missiles, and were backed up by a force of Mitsubishi F-15Js in an attempt to keep him within range of the M6000 T.C. System. However, none of their weaponry seemed to faze the kaiju, who proceeded to march towards a nuclear power plant. The military then had to make a hasty retreat as Biollante reappeared from space in her new form.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

As Godzilla swam through Kagoshima Bay, a group of G-Force AH-1s was mobilized and fired on Godzilla using their rockets and machine guns. The fleet of helicopters was backed up by the appearance of several Hatsuyuki-class destroyers and the Haruna-class destroyer Hiei. Godzilla ignored the helicopters and blasted Hiei with his atomic breath, destroying it, before continuing to travel towards Fukuoka.

Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion

Multiple AH-1J Cobras of the JGSDF were sent to assist Gamera in fighting the Mother Legion at Ashikaga, and proved instrumental in Gamera's eventual victory, first destroying the Mother Legion's swarm of Soldier Legion after they had been lured to a nearby electrical plant, then firing on Mother Legion herself with their arsenal of anti-tank missiles. The missiles blew off several of her Interference Wave Claws and rendered her unable to defend against Gamera's Plasma Fireball, allowing him to close in and tear off her Nasal Horn.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

The AH-1 Cobra was used as a part of the defense line to hold Godzilla off until Kiryu arrived, though the line was easily broken.

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS

Reiwa era

Shin Godzilla

Numerous JGSDF AH-1S Cobras were used to engage Godzilla in all three of his forms, having first been used when Godzilla came ashore in Kamata; despite being ready to fire, the attack had to be called off as there were still civilians in the area attempting to escape. After Godzilla transformed into his fourth form, the helicopters were used again, but the machine guns and rockets seemed to have no effect on him.
