Anguirus (アンギラス,   Angirasu) is a giant Ankylosaurus-like kaiju who first appears in episode 4 of the 2021 animated series Godzilla Singular Point.

Name

Anguirus' Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス), comes from the Japanese spelling of the name of the dinosaur genus Ankylosaurus (アンキロサウルス,   Ankirosaurusu), upon which the monster's design is based. The name was chosen from several names proposed by employees of Toho during production of Godzilla Raids Again.

Anguirus' name was coined in-universe by a local mayor's grandchild, which is speculated to be a mispronunciation of Ankylosaurus. Local residents also referred to Anguirus as a big hedgehog.

Development

For Godzilla Singular Point, Anguirus was designed by monster design artist Eiji Yamamori, who found the task simple, basing it on the dinosaur Ankylosaurus. He stated, "I think the spines of the Ankylosaurus were originally designed to face the back of the head to prepare for attacks from behind, [so for Anguirus] the spines are pointed forward as a means of attacking opponents from the front." Yamamori retained the nose spike and curved jaw from the Showa Anguirus design, as he found both traits memorable as a child. Sketches by Yamamori were then sent to concept artist Yuji Kaneko, who determined the color and textures given to the designs. Orange Co., Ltd. handled the modeling and animation of Anguirus. As the VFX team was granted creative freedom in designing Anguirus's precognitive shield, they tested multiple approaches, such as particles hovering around his body, before settling on a rainbow pattern that shimmered in the direction of an oncoming attack.[1]

Design

This version of Anguirus maintains the traditional design of the character's head, with an elongated snout that curves downward tipped with a singular nose horn, but with spikes running up his forehead into five large spikes at the back of his head and still more spikes running down his cheeks. Anguirus two rows of teeth, one set exposed when the is closed and the other running along the jaw-like like typical teeth. The tongue of the monster is covered in penguin-like. At the base of the head, the underside of Anguirus' neck enlargens with a row of spikes running down its center and a segmented look connecting these spikes. These spikes disappear near the base of the neck but the segmented look remains. His body large and rounded with thick, armored legs. The forelegs are longer than the hind-legs and are digitigrade while the hind-legs are plantigrade. His shoulders slope up into a hunchback, where it quickly slopes down to the tail. His carapace covers the entirety of his back and hangs off of his body as it comes to an end. A row of three spikes runs down each side of his neck, while five rows of smooth osteoderms cover the back of the neck and transition into rows of seven spikes at the shoulders that run down the rest of the back. Once the carapace splits, five rows of spines run down his tail towards a spiked club on its tip. Anguirus is brown with a red underbelly, while its teeth and the osteoderms on his legs and lower neck are a dirty white. The tip of Anguirus' snout is light brown, which moves to the very top of the snout but expands to cover the eye brows and spikes at the top of the head. All spikes on the back and cheek of the monster are the same shade of light brown.

Personality

Anguirus is a playful and curious kaiju, jumping around recklessly when alone and playing with the downed body of Jet Jaguar. When unprovoked, Anguirus appears to be rather complacent with those nearby. Once provoked or wounded, Anguirus becomes highly aggressive and lashes out at nearby objects and creatures.

History

Reiwa era

Godzilla Singular Point

"Gadabout"

After the death of a swarm of Rodan, their carcasses were gathered up for research and disposal. Finding the site, Anguirus stole one of these carcasses and ate it in the nearby forest. He then traveled to a nearby highway, where he attacked an elderly couple and overturned their vehicle. A JSDF unit was dispatched to investigate, believing the culprit to have been a surviving Rodan. One soldier had arrived only to come face to face with the armored kaiju and fire on it, seemingly being killed by Anguirus.

"Theorist"

Yun Arikawa encountered Anguirus in a ravine, accidentally gaining his attention when he stepped on a stick. While at first curious about Yun, the arrival of Haberu Kato, Takehiro Kai, and a pair of hunters startled the kaiju. One of the hunters fired on Anguirus, but his bullet was deflected by the monster's carapace, distracting the humans long enough for Anguirus to escape. Within a few days, a competition to catch Anguirus was organized by the mayor of a nearby town in an evacuated golf course. Two of the contestants were Goro Otaki and his robot Jet Jaguar and his friendly rival Genzo Kojima with an exsplosive harpoon gun mounted on his truck. However, the trap was ruined when Anguirus arrived chasing a truck of other hunting contestants, having grown from around twice as tall as a human to towering over the truck. Genzo attempted to engage the armored kaiju, but Anguirus' deflected his harpoon with its precognitive shield while the gun's recoil toppled the truck. Just as Anguirus closed in on the man, Goro intervened with Jet Jaguar and prepared to engage the kaiju.

"Enfatico"

Anguirus battled Jet Jaguar on the golf course, eventually overpowering the mech and playing with its limp body before heading towards a tent for onlookers. The soldier escort guarding the event quickly took action and fired on the kaiju, only for their bullets to deflect back at them and destroy one of their trucks, forcing the other to retreat. Anguirus trampled on towards the tent unopposed until Jet Jaguar reengaged it with Genzo's harpoon, shooting the kaiju in the chest and seemingly killing it. The mayor, who had attended the event, took the opportunity to boast on how he handled such threats while taking a photo in front of the corpse when Anguirus suddenly woke up and went on a rampage through a nearby parking lot where he wrecked Jet Jaguar with ease, knocking Goro out in the process, and smashed several cars. Yun and his AI Yung took control of Jet Jaguar and began luring the kaiju until it jumped, allowing Jet Jaguar to shoot Anguirus in the head, finally killing him.

Abilities

Precognitive shield

Anguirus uses his precognitive shield to deflect bullets

Anguirus is able to briefly see into the future by vibrating his spikes to produce an energy field. The subsequent energy field also acts as a shield from attacks by seemingly absorbing kinetic energy. Any projectiles that hit the shield will be deflected, and using its foreknowledge of the future Anguirus can aim deflected projectiles back at his attackers.

Physical abilities

Anguirus throwing Jet Jaguar with his tail

Anguirus mainly relies on shoving matches in combat, which were strong enough to overturn a van in his smaller form and later halt a charging Jet Jaguar. Anguirus can travel at great speeds on land, able to catch up with a speeding truck, and leap up to ten meters. Anguirus seems to be quite stealthy, as he was able to steal one of the Rodan carcasses and eat it without anyone noticing, silently stalk a JSDF platoon, and disappear while Yun, Haberu, Kai, and a duo of hunters weren't looking.

Clubbed tail

Anguirus' most dangerous weapon is his clubbed tail. One strike of his tail easily decapitated Jet Jaguar, and the second launched the robot into the air leaving it damaged and briefly taking it out of the fight.

Spiked projectiles

In the browser game Godzilla Singular Point: Escape!! Radio Wave Monster Rodan!, Anguirus is able to launch spikes from his carapace.

Weaknesses

Anguirus is much less durable than most kaiju. While most firearms leave no permanent damage if they pierce his skin, Genzo's harpoon heavily injured and later killed Anguirus. Additionally, weapons fired at point-blank range seem to thwart Anguirus' ability to deflect them.

Roar

This Anguirus maintains the character's iconic roar. He also lets out a few Tyrannosaurus rex roars and growls from Jurassic Park.

Trivia

  • This Anguirus' split carapace is likely a homage to the original Anguirus who originally was planned to have a split carapace, but due to complications with the suit the carapace was joined together into a single piece.
