History

Heisei era

Godzilla vs. Biollante

Formerly a university colleague of Erika Shiragami, Asuka spent the five years since Erika’s untimely death working for the Japan Psyonics Center, an organization dedicated to studying and training people with supernatural powers of Extrasensory Perception and make use of their abilities to advance various fields of study, presumably funded by her father’s massive research foundation which takes on unconventional and controversial scientific subjects.

Erika’s father, Genichiro Shiragami called in a favor, asking Asuka to bring her best psychic pupil Miki Saegusa along to find out for the sake of his own scientific curiosity if the young girl could communicate with his roses. Unbeknownst to Asuka, Dr. Shiragami actually conducted this experiment with Erika’s DNA injected into the rose, but Miki still couldn’t seem to hear anything, until they were leaving and the rose suddenly called out Asuka’s name.

Later, Asuka went to have a drink with her old colleague Kazuto Kirishima who used to date Erika, but since she introduced him to Asuka, he fell for her instead. The two had been developing a modest relationship for five years, but Kirishima’s opposition towards the blind ambition Asuka’s father holds for his foundation creates a rift between them. Asuka remained uncertain when Kirishima wanted her to go abroad with him when he goes to study bioengineering in Massachusetts.

One day at the Japan Psyonics Center, Asuka was shocked to learn that Miki and the children had all been sharing the same dream about Godzilla’s return every night, and how each night it becomes more clear. She takes the children’s drawings to the National Land Agency’s Special Disaster Research Council, urging them to induct Miki to utilize her powers for Godzilla countermeasures. While the Prime Minister initially dismissed her story as pure fantasy, the National Land Agency did eventually go through with testing her power, presumably through the influence of Asuka’s father, who is a leading figure in the political and business world who believes in the promise of unconventional research.

Asuka was there for Miki when she was assigned to sense Godzilla’s activity in Mt. Mihara, and then again when she attempted to divert Godzilla’s attention away from Osaka at the construction site of the Kansai airport. The latter of which overexerted Miki’s power, knocking her comatose, and Asuka took her to the hospital. After Miki came to and interpreted a prophetic vision, Asuka drove her to the Defense Force outpost for Operation Thunderbeam.

After Godzilla’s battle with Biollante, Erika’s spirit materialized and drifted away before the chain of command’s eyes. Asuka’s joy was short lived as she saw her mentor’s life flash before her eyes when an assassin of the Saradia Secret Service had a hit on Shiragami. Kirishima valiantly pursued the agent, chasing him into the TC field, where his ally activated a system, evaporating the agent. Asuka commended Kirishima’s bravery, and decided to go with him to the States, but he decided to decline the offer and the two stayed together in Japan.
