Bakugon (バクゴン,   Bakugon) is a tapir-like Terror-Beast who first appeared in episode 23 of the 1973 Toho tokusatsu kaiju series Zone Fighter, titled "Secret of the Great Terror-Beast Bakugon."

Name

Bakugon's name is most likely derived from the baku, a tapir-like creature from Japanese mythology upon which the monster's design may have been based.

Design

Bakugon is a tall monster who draws on characteristics of tamanduas and tapirs. He has brown fur with a white torso and a black snout, ears and hands. Bakugon also has a red spot on the side of his neck. Bakugon appears to be augmented with cybernetics, as he has a set of metal objects on his back. A set of spikes also runs down to Bakugon's snout from the top of his neck.

Abilities

Fire

Bakugon is able to spit fire from its snout, with anything it touches set ablaze.

Illusion magic

Bakugon was able to use illusion magic (幻想マジック,   gensō majikku), causing Zone Fighter "anguish" by distorting his vision, seeming to teleport around him, and producing multiple versions of itself.

Hallucination gas

Bakugon is capable of producing an invisible gas which causes anyone that inhales it to hallucinate. This was demonstrated when several schoolchildren inhaled the gas and believed they were seeing a beautiful garden, when in reality it was just a scrapyard. The illusion was unable to be broken without wearing a specially made Zone Glass.

Superheated gas

According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), Bakugon can emit a superheated deadly gas (高熱殺人ガス,   kōnetsu satsujin gasu) from his back, though this is never demonstrated.[3]
