Brush of the God (神の筆,   Kami no Fude) is an upcoming 2023 tokusatsu kaiju film directed by Keizo Murase in his directorial debut. The film was crowdfunded via Motion Gallery in September 2020.[1]

Description

This synopsis has been edited for grammar.
Special effects modelmaker Kenzo Tokimiya has passed away. Akari, who did not have good memories of her grandfather's work, visits a farewell party for his fans with mixed feelings. There, she meets her classmate Takuya, a hardcore tokusatsu fan.

Akari and Takuya meet a young man named Hozumi, who was going to be in the movie Brush of the God that Kenzo was going to make. This comes as a surprise to Akari, since this is the first she has heard that her grandfather was involved in such a production.

Hozumi picks up a brush, a prop from the Brush of the God exhibit, and draws a circle in the air.

"Please save his world!"

With Hozumi's words, Akari and Takuya are swallowed by the wormhole that suddenly appears.

The next thing they know, they have entered the world of the movie Brush of the God, greeted by the terrible visage of the kaiju Yamata no Orochi, which is not supposed to be in the movie, trying to burn everything in this world.

In order to get back to the original world, the two must unravel the secret of the movie Brush of the God that Kenzo was supposed to make.[2]

Development

Director Keizo Murase originally conceived of the idea for Brush of the God while making The Mighty Peking Man, following a suggestion that he write a film for Hong Kong producer Chua Lam.[3] The Motion Gallery crowdfunding campaign for Brush of the God raised ¥2,600,192, well over its ¥2 million goal, concluding on September 25, 2020.[1] A subsequent Kickstarter campaign was unsuccessful, raising less than half of its $24,272 goal.[3] The synopsis provided by the campaign described a talking rabbit giving a boy in rural Japan a brush which can turn thoughts into reality. He and his two friends embark on a quest to prevent Yamata no Orochi from returning, facing other monsters along the way.

The production posted test footage of the Yamata no Orochi puppet online on October 29, 2020.[4] A second Kickstarter meant to improve the quality of the special effects launched on December 5, 2021, and quickly exceeded its ¥1 million goal, finishing with ¥2,225,052.[2] It included a significantly revised synopsis, with the accompanying video thumbnail also stating that the project had been expanded into a feature-length film.
