Second Lieutenant Catherine Berger (キャサリン・バーガー少尉,   Kyasarin Bāgā Shōi) is a minor character in the 1993 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. She is a copilot and operator of Mechagodzilla.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Catherine Berger attended training classes alongside Kazuma Aoki and the other prospective Mechagodzilla pilots. She was an expert in martial arts, holding a black belt in karate; during combat training, she easily bested Aoki, knocking him unconscious with a single blow before cartwheeling back to her position. She also took part in Godzilla training simulations.

When the egg of a juvenile Godzilla which had been found on Adonoa Island was taken to Kyoto for study, it hatched and attracted Godzilla himself to the city. Responding to the alert, Berger and her fellow pilots, minus Aoki who did not show and was replaced by English soldier Johnny Owen, rushed to Mechagodzilla to face Godzilla. Mechagodzilla intercepted the King of the Monsters in the Suzuka Mountains, where it blasted the beast with its lasers and missiles. After knocking Godzilla to the ground with a blast of Mechagodzilla's Plasma Grenade, the crew sent out a barrage of Paralyzer Missiles followed by its Shock Anchors. Their advantage did not last long, however, as Godzilla miraculously reversed the Shock Anchors' effects with an electromagnetic pulse, causing Mechagodzilla to suffer heavy damage. The machine, now without power and rendered inoperable, stood helpless as Godzilla approached. Godzilla knocked Mechagodzilla to the ground and thoroughly beat on it before continuing on his way.

Later, after the monster Rodan reawakened to rescue its surrogate brother BabyGodzilla, Mechagodzilla was deployed alongside the Garuda to engage it in Makuhari. Though Rodan managed to down the Garuda and damage one of Mechagodzilla's eyes, it was no match for the mech's firepower, which sent it plummeting into a cluster of nearby buildings. Godzilla then unexpectedly appeared for a final showdown. As the titans closed in on the Chiba Marine Stadium, they locked beams before engaging in a close range struggle. Godzilla managed to pick Mechagodzilla up, hurling it into a building and repeatedly stomping on it. As Berger reported heavy damage, Lieutenant Sonezaki called to Aoki in the Garuda, who flew to their aid. With Godzilla distracted, the crew returned Mechagodzilla to its feet before combining with the Garuda to form Super Mechagodzilla. The upgraded machine resumed battle with Godzilla, this time taking the upper hand. They eventually executed the G-Crusher strategy, destroying Godzilla's secondary brain and paralyzing him from the waist down. The crew continued to blast Godzilla, bringing him to near death; however, Rodan suddenly awoke and flew to Godzilla, imparting the monster with its essence and restoring his second brain. The empowered Godzilla made quick work of Super Mechagodzilla, melting its diamond coating with his spiral heat ray and setting the machine ablaze.

Godzilla turned his attention to Baby, leaving Mechagodzilla a wreck but its crew still alive. The team climbed out in time to observe Godzilla and Baby uniting. After Miki Saegusa used her psychic abilities to convince Baby to leave with Godzilla, Takuya Sasaki commented that life always conquers. Sonezaki confusedly asked, "Life, sir?" to which Berger added, "Yeah, life... against artificial life."

Trivia

  • In a deleted scene, Takuya Sasaki joked to Kazuma Aoki that Berger was a "replicant" due to her stern nature, a term used in the 1982 film Blade Runner to refer to artificial humans. Because of this, a somewhat popular misconception in the Western Godzilla fanbase has arisen purporting that Berger was originally supposed to be an android before the scene was cut,[3] with the character's actress Shelley Sweeney even being asked about it in a 2018 interview.[4]
