The Colossal Titan (超大型巨人,   Chō ōgata Kyojin) is a kaijin created by Hajime Isayama for his manga series Attack on Titan. In the 2015 live-action films produced by Toho, Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 1 and Part 2, his human form is Kubal (クバル,   Kubaru), the director of the Military Police regiment.

History

Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 1

100 years after the remnants of humanity built three concentric walls to protect themselves from man-eating giants called Titans, the Colossal Titan suddenly appeared behind the Outer Wall, steam spewing out of him. With a series of kicks, he created a hole in the wall before vanishing, allowing smaller Titans to flood in and massacre the Garrison and nearby villages. Humanity withdrew to the Middle Wall.

Two years after the Colossal Titan's attack, Director General Kubal addressed recruits joining the new Scout Regiment. With the food supply rapidly depleting, he announced a mission to seal the hole in the Outer Wall with the last of humanity's explosives. He introduced Weapons Squad Leader Hans, who demonstrated the new omni-directional mobility gear allowing soldiers to launch attacks on Titans from the air.

Titans detected the Scout Regiment during their first stop on the way to the Monzen District where the Colossal Titan first appeared. Kubal ordered the trucks to immediately press onward, leaving most of the recruits to fend for themselves, but Captain Shikishima and Mikasa came to their rescue. In Otemachi, Kubal praised Shikishima for guarding a secret stash of explosives hidden in the city. Due to rumors of an insurgent group, however, they are not quite in the location he claimed they were, but a hidden underground chamber. Later, he overheard Armin and Sasha discussing the forbidden technology from humanity's past and reminded them of the destruction and misery these inventions caused.

At daybreak, Titans began attacking the city. Kubal and his troops focused their efforts on protecting the truck with the explosives. Nonetheless, a masked man drove away in the truck, only for a grief-stricken Lil to take the wheel herself and detonate the explosives amidst a group of Titans.

Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 2

Years ago, Kubal was part of a team of Military Police who arrested Eren's parents, Grisha and Carla, for possessing forbidden books. Eren himself escaped with Souda.

After learning that Eren, now one of the Scout Regiment recruits, can transform into a Titan like himself, Kubal had him restrained and surrounded by Military Police in the same building where the explosives were stored. He monologued about the perfect society humanity created since the Great Titan War, free of conflict and dangerous technology. He asked if Eren is human or Titan; when Eren answers human, he questioned how a human could regrow a severed arm. Eren asked for Shikishima, but Kubal had already sent him to the Middle Wall to report the mission's failure. Before the Military Police could execute Eren, Armin objected, recounting how the Mysterious Titan swept through the Titans menacing them. With the Scouting Regiment nearly wiped out, Eren's new power represented their only hope of completing the mission, by carrying the dud bomb still resting outside Monzen to the Outer Wall and setting it off. Hans also protested, but only in the hopes of dissecting Eren. Kubal accused Armin of being part of the insurgency that tried to commandeer the truck with the explosives. Now in the Military Police's crosshairs as well, Armin appealed to Mikasa, who remained silent, but Eren's plea to help save humanity convinced her to draw her sword against Kubal. He was amused, noting how the Nysterious Titan nearly ate her. Souda came forward to explain that Eren can only retain control over his Titan form for so long, only to be shot by Kubal, who used his switch to pull the trigger on one of his underling's rifles. The standoff ended when a heavily-armored White Titan crashed through the ceiling, crushing Kubal under debris and carrying off Eren.

After recovering, Kubal goes to Monzen on foot. He comes at the aftermath of a battle between Shikishima's forces and the scouts and picks up a gun from one of the corpses. Kubal arrives at the top of the Outer Wall while the scouts return to seal the hole made by the Colossal Titan. He watches Eren and Shikishima battle in their titan and claps after Eren wins the bout. He offers them all a place in the interior if they hand over Eren. They refuse, so Kubal warns the group by shooting Armin in the leg. Sasha shoots arrows into Kubal's neck causing him to fall over and transform into the Colossal Titan.

Colossal Titan

After two years, the Colossal Titan returns. The scouts turn their attention to him the Colossal Titan swats many scouts away, including Jean. Eren is able to reach the Colossal Titan's nape, but is caught by him before he can slice out Kubal. The titan lets out a laugh and tries to crush Eren, but the White Titan, with the last bomb, jams it into the Colossal Titan's mouth and activates it, killing Kubal and the Colossal Titan.
