Plot
After a plan crashes in Africa, a search party is set out for them by a man named Nomura, who eventually finds the only survivor: a baby, being cared for by King Kong. While trying to rescue the infant, Nomura encounters a Giant Scorpion, who soon does battle with Kong, giving him the chance to grab the baby and escape to the helicopter, unaware Kong was following them.
At the same time, the body of Godzilla, who's presumed to be dead, washes ashore and is taken to be displayed at an amusement park in Japan. However, Kong soon arrives to look for the infant, awakening Godzilla, and the clash between the two kings begin once more, eventually leading to the both of them disappearing into the sea. The military hatches a plan to use the baby as bait for Kong in order to subdue him, but once Nomura and his wife give the infant to Kong, they find out he really wasn't interested in the infant at all, and the 8th Wonder of the World heads back to the ocean.
A couple days later, Godzilla is also being lead to a trap in Mount Aso, via the use of a giant King Kong shaped balloon. Thinking it's the real deal, he attacks it, only to activate an explosive that sends him hurdling into the mountain. Nomura, along with his wife and infant, hop inot his car and head towards Fukuoka, only to see Godzilla rising up from Mount Aso's Caldera, completely unharmed! However, Kong is also at the mountain, and the true battle begins. Admist the carnage, Nomura is knocked unconscious, and the baby is stuck on the mountain. Suddenly, a massive Earthquake happens, simultaneously awakening causing Aso to erupt. Ironically, Godzilla and Kong are the ones who end up saving the baby, as Godzilla's atomic breath dissipates the magma heading towards him, and Kong picks him up and gives him to the now awakened Nomura. As the three humans run down the mountain to safety, the ashes from the volcano envelops Godzilla and Kong, and when the smoke clears, both have disappeared, the final fates of the world's strongest beings left unknown...
History
Following the huge financial success of King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962, Toho immediately began production of the next Godzilla film. Hoping to repeat the success of the previous film, Toho initially decided to produce a direct sequel pitting King Kong against Godzilla once again. Shinichi Sekizawa wrote a screenplay for the film, which had the simple working title of Continuation: King Kong vs. Godzilla, and submitted it in 1963. However, the film was quickly scrapped and replaced with a film pitting Godzilla against a giant version of Frankenstein's monster, titled Frankenstein vs. Godzilla, which was itself split into two different films, Mothra vs. Godzilla and Frankenstein vs. Baragon, in 1964 and 1965, respectively.

Trivia
- Toho much later considered another film featuring King Kong and Godzilla doing battle, Godzilla vs. King Kong, which was planned to be the third entry in the Heisei series of Godzilla films. However, due to legal complications involving the rights to King Kong, the idea was scrapped and replaced with Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. The two monsters will finally meet again in Legendary Pictures' Godzilla vs. Kong, due for release in 2021.
