— Victor "Animal" Palotti on C-Rex's fight with Godzilla ("New Family: Part 2")

Crustaceous Rex is a crustacean mutation kaiju created by TriStar Pictures that first appeared in the 1998 Godzilla: The Series episode, "New Family: Part 2."

Name

Crustaceous Rex's name is an amalgamation of crustacean and rex, the Latin word for "king," to emphasize its ferocity and aquatic origins. Its name is often shortened to C-Rex, much like how Tyrannosaurus rex's name is shortened to "T-Rex." The name Sea-Rex was used in some concept art, which adds another layer to his name's aquatic references by further implying that the "C" in C-Rex is intended to be a homophone of "sea," making a connection between the monster and water.

Design

C-Rex is yellow-green in color with a dark green shell on its back. It has two large, clawed feet, and four tentacles on its chest, as well as two vestigial tentacles on its thorax. It has a segmented mouth composed of four tentacle-like structures around a simple, toothless mouth. In "Monster Wars: Part 2," it appears briefly with an erroneous brown color scheme.

Origins

The Crustaceous Rex is a mutation caused by French nuclear testing in the Caribbean, an origin story implied to apply to most of the series' monsters.

History

Godzilla: The Series

"New Family: Part 2"

Crustaceous Rex fed on the Jamaican population of Mutant Giant Squids until they were destroyed by Godzilla. It then came to the surface in search of food. Crustaceous Rex proceeded to a nearby town, where Monique Dupre used explosives and flares to try and ward it off. Unfazed, C-Rex proceeded to a nearby highway and began to devour the newly poured tar on a highway as an alternative to the tar naturally produced by the Mutant Giant Squids. When it approached the next tar patch, H.E.A.T. used it as a lure to bring it to Godzilla. Godzilla then defeated C-Rex using his atomic breath and forced the creature to retreat.

"Monster Wars: Part 1"

Crustaceous Rex was called from wherever it had been to Leviathan Alien Site Omega, where they began to put into effect their plan to use the monsters to dominate Earth.

"Monster Wars: Part 2"

After spending time buried in the sands of Site Omega, Crustaceous Rex arose with inexplicably regenerated limbs and an erroneous dark brown color scheme. All Monsters were then sent into the world's major cities to cause destruction. Crustaceous Rex was sent to destroy London.

"Monster Wars: Part 3"

Crustaceous Rex continued its rampage until H.E.A.T. deactivated the Leviathan Alien control beacon. At that point it began to attack Leviathan Alien vessels until it was incapacitated by human forces. It was then taken to Isle Del Diablo, to become a part of a Mutation Research Facility.

"S.C.A.L.E."

While living on Monster Island, C-Rex and the other mutations were outfitted with inhibitor collars to keep them from hurting one another. During a raid from the terrorist organization S.C.A.L.E., Crustaceous Rex's enclosure was opened, and his collar was disabled. He began to run amok and fight with the other mutations, and was eventually defeated by Skeetera. After the threats of Skeetera and S.C.A.L.E. were removed, Crustaceous Rex and the other mutations were safely returned to their enclosures.

"Future Shock"

In an alternate future where the D.R.A.G.M.A.s overran the world, Crustaceous Rex and all of the other mutations on Monster Island were released by Anthony Hicks to fight them off, but were all slain. However, thanks to the efforts of H.E.A.T., this future was avoided.

Abilities

Tentacles

Crustaceous Rex has tentacles on its mouth and chest for constricting and immobilizing opponents.

Despite having its arms severed in "New Family: Part 2," Crustaceous Rex reappears in later episodes with them fully in tact and unimpaired, which could point to regenerative properties, or simply be a continuity error.
