Dr Pepper is a soft drink marketed as having a unique flavor. Created in the 1880s by Charles Alderton of Waco, Texas, and first served around 1885, Dr Pepper was first nationally marketed in the United States in 1904 and is now also sold in Europe, Asia and South America.

A $10 million advertisement campaign in 1985 saw Godzilla featured in two TV commercials for Dr Pepper products (the first one for Dr Pepper and the second one for Diet Dr Pepper), while the regular version of the soft drink was also featured in the U.S. version of The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla 1985.[1] Dr Pepper also sponsored a little-seen tie-in music video of the song "I Was Afraid to Love You" for Godzilla 1985.

Commercials

Godzilla Dr Pepper TV commercial #1

Shot in black and white, this TV commercial shows a cast of Japanese citizens and an American woman (the latter in a role similar to American journalist Steve Martin's from Godzilla, King of the Monsters!) on the roof of a building watching Godzilla destroying a city. He tries drinking an unknown liquid from a tanker truck, but does not like the flavor, and incinerates a train car full of lemonade with his atomic breath. He then finds a giant open can of Dr Pepper (the only thing in the commercial shot in color, along with two open Dr Pepper longneck glass bottles that two of the humans on the roof are seen drinking) on the roof of another building and tears it off. After drinking it, he is finally appeased and then burps.

Godzilla Dr Pepper TV commercial #2

Shot in color and picking up where the previous TV commercial ended, a female monster named Newzilla begins rampaging through the city. Godzilla, having fallen in love with her, picks up a nearby tree and offers it to her similar to a boy on a date offering his girlfriend a bouquet of flowers, with Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet song playing in the background. Newzilla swats the tree out of Godzilla's hands in rejection. Godzilla then finds a giant open can of Diet Dr Pepper with a giant drinking straw in it on a billboard, tears it off and offers her the beverage, which she drinks, finally appeasing her as well.
