The Giant Jellyfish is a mutated jellyfish kaiju created by Hanna-Barbera that first appeared in the 1979 Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla episode, "The Macro-Beasts."

History

Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla

The Macro-Beasts

The Giant Jellyfish was one of several marine animals enlarged to giant size, thanks to recent volcanic eruptions and a mysterious underground, gooey substance emerging from Capaldi Island; a relatively young formation which itself was created by the aforementioned geological activity. The combination of heated water and the edible substances resulted in the once normal jellyfish and its fellow sea creatures assuming such gigantic proportions, becoming the Macro-Beasts. The Giant Jellyfish was the second Macro-Beast to be encountered by the visiting crew of the Calico, being completely immobile and floating upon the ocean's surface.

Trivia

  • The Giant Jellyfish is never seen again after its brief appearance, though it could be assumed that like the other Macro-Beasts, the jellyfish returned to its original state thanks to the actions of Godzilla and his allies on board the Calico.
  • Brock, a crew member of the Calico, comments on the Giant Jellyfish being 'the size of a whale,' however when visually compared to the Calico itself in the episode, the Giant Jellyfish appears to be even bigger than Godzilla himself.
  • The mysterious purple substance that enlarges the Giant Jellyfish and the other Macro-Beasts is possibly based on a similar subterranean chemical from H.G. Wells' novel The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth (1901-1904), which also enlarged any lifeform which consumed it.
