Godzilla (ゴジラ is a Gojira)daikaiju who will appear in the 2021 Toho animated series, Godzilla: Singular Point.
Name
The name "Godzilla" is an official English transliteration of the word "Gojira." The name "Gojira" was given to the creature in the original film and is a combination of two Japanese words: gorira (ゴリラ), meaning gorilla, and kujira (鯨), meaning whale. This combination was created because, in one of the concepts for the 1954 film, Godzilla was described as "a cross between a gorilla and a whale." A presumably ancient depiction of Godzilla writes his name in kanji as 古史羅 (Gojira), incorporating the Japanese word for "ancient history" koshi (古史). This spelling differs from that used in the 1954 film and Shin Godzilla, which was written 呉爾羅 but pronounced the same.
Japanese fans have nicknamed this Godzilla GyuraGoji (ギュラゴジ), which is derived from Singular Point's title, specifically "Singular" (シンギュラ, and Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira Shingyura) (ゴジラ).
