Development
The first narrative animated Godzilla series since Godzilla: The Series ended in 2000, Godzilla Singular Point is set in the year 2030 and follows two primary protagonists: engineer Yun Arikawa of the Otaki Factory and graduate student Mei Kamino. When Yun and Mei's separate investigations lead to them crossing paths, they learn of a missing scientist whose surviving work warns of a terrible catastrophe that could destroy the world. As strange creatures begin terrorizing the globe, Yun and Mei must work with different groups of allies to avoid a disastrous future at the hands of the apocalyptic creature known only as Godzilla. The series, which employs a blend of 2D and 3D animation, consists of a single season of 13 episodes, with no further seasons announced.

Plot
In the year 2030, engineers Yun Arikawa and Haberu Kato of the Otaki Factory are called to investigate a seemingly abandoned European-style house in Japan. At the same time, graduate student Mei Kamino, herself studying fantasy creatures in folklore, is called in to investigate a strange radio broadcast. Both Yun and Mei's investigations lead to them hearing the same mysterious song. Meanwhile, Yun and Haberu's boss, eccentric elderly inventor Goro Otaki, has completed a giant robot called Jet Jaguar for the purpose of defending mankind, but as he shows his invention off at an expo, a large winged creature descends and attacks the crowd. Jet Jaguar is used to fight the beast off, being badly damaged in the process, but more of the monsters, dubbed "Rodan," begin appearing en masse. Mei meets with researcher Li Guiying of the mysterious SHIVA consortium, offering her own expertise for the group's research into the work of missing scientist Michiyuki Ashihara. Other monsters continue to appear and menace the world, including a particularly large and powerful one that lands in Tokyo and begins to evolve. It soon becomes clear that this monster is the dreaded Godzilla, a mythical beast prophesied to bring about the end of the world. Mei, Yun, and their allies race to find a method of defeating Godzilla before he destroys the world, with Yun and his allies using Jet Jaguar to battle the other monsters and make their way to the besieged Tokyo, and Mei and her allies attempting to uncover the mystery of Ashihara's work that may hold the key to Godzilla's defeat.

Development
Planning on what would ultimately become Godzilla Singular Point began two to three years before its release, with the goal of capturing elements which had not yet been featured in the Godzilla series, inspired by the huge success of the 2016 film Shin Godzilla. After viewing Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi, Toho producer Takashi Yoshizawa was impressed and offered director Atsushi Takahashi the opportunity to create a new story for a Godzilla anime from the ground up, with an emphasis on making it entertaining while incorporating science fiction elements.

Toh EnJoe, who was recruited to handle the series' composition, wanted to ground the series in reality as much as possible while still incorporating sci-fi elements, an influence taken from the 2016 American film Arrival. Due to his prior experience on the anime series Space Dandy, EnJoe was sought out for the project by Bones president Masahiko Minami. EnJoe was initially hired to simply supervise the series' sci-fi elements, but after working on the series long enough it was deemed unrealistic to hire another writer for the show and so EnJoe became the primary writer, handling both the show's story and script. Eiji Yamamori, Kazue Kato, and Kan Sawada, all of whom had prior experience working with Takahashi on films such as Blue Exorcist: The Movie and Doraemon, joined the Godzilla anime's staff as well.

It was Takahashi's idea to have the show's main characters confront Godzilla primarily using their minds, in contrast to previous main characters in the Godzilla series who were often involved with military organizations and attempted to fight Godzilla using weaponry. While media in the Godzilla series typically features social commentary and messages reflecting the time in which it was produced, Singular Point downplayed any message as much as possible and focused on entertainment above anything else. The show's creators were essentially given complete creative freedom in developing the series by Toho once production began, so long as the series involved Godzilla. As such, director Takahashi, writer EnJoe, and producers from Toho and Bones met to discuss and determine the outline and pacing of the series. Discussions often revolved around whether to make the series a completely sci-fi-oriented story or a fantasy, with EnJoe ultimately deciding to have the story occur in a world that is an extension of modern reality in order to differentiate it from settings of past Godzilla films, including the GODZILLA anime trilogy. As EnJoe's script contained a great deal of information that was difficult to visualize, the show's creators added action scenes, robots, and references to past Toho films in order to make the show more appealing to viewers.

Early story ideas for the show included a focus on high school students as the main characters, Godzilla fighting other monsters around the world, or Godzilla battling samurai in feudal Japan.

*Multiple scenes in the trailers are absent from the show. These include shots of Godzilla Ultima using his atomic breath without the rings surrounding it, a second-form Rodan under a bridge, another Rodan soaring above a city while shedding Archetype dust, and a helicopter facing Godzilla in a city.
*In episode 8, Haberu alludes to "gigantic sea roaches" 巨大フナムシ as a possible explanation for how a Manda was killed. This is the same name used for the Shockirus from The Return of Godzilla.

*The ending sequence of Godzilla Singular Point contains numerous references to past Godzilla and kaiju films and series.
**The sequence begins with Mei Kamino sleeping face-down on a desk, holding a pencil with a Super X pencil topper. One of the books on the desk features Mothra's symbol on the cover. The folded origami chart by Goro Maki from Shin Godzilla rests on top of another book. Next to her is a portable DVD player, which displays an advertisement for Bireley's Orange. She is awoken by a news report, which shows a woman resembling Kayoco Anne Patterson from Shin Godzilla reporting on the appearances of several monsters for the fictional network GNN. A man and woman are first seen standing next to a giant egg which pulses red, similar to BabyGodzilla's egg from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Biollante is then seen floating on Lake Ashi in her Flower Beast form, followed by an Anguirus resembling the Showa incarnation erupting from underground in a city. Near Atami Castle, Miki Saegusa from the Heisei Godzilla series and Yuri Tachibana, Haruki Kadokura, and Jun Maruo from GMK witness a flying Hedorah whiz past. Finally, the Rodan from Godzilla: King of the Monsters can be seen flying through the clouds from a jet cockpit.
**Next, Mei runs past several wrecked cars. Akane Yashiro, Tokumitsu Yuhara and his daughter Sara from Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla can be seen talking behind an Anti-Megalosaurus Force truck. Mei also wears a Kiryu Squad patch.
**In the next scene, a man resembling Daisuke Serizawa from the original Godzilla is seen inspecting the corpse of a Meganulon from Rodan alongside Mitsuo Katagiri. A crowd surrounds them, composed of Shinichi Ozaki, Miyuki Otonashi, Douglas Gordon, and Anna Otonashi from Godzilla Final Wars, Yuji Shinoda, Io Shinoda, Yuki Ichinose, and Shiro Miyasaka from Godzilla 2000: Millennium along with the Godzilla Prediction Network truck, Ichiro Miki and his friend Sachiko from All Monsters Attack, and Gengo Odaka, Machiko Shima, Tomoko Tomoe, Shosaku Takasugi, Takeshi Shima, Fumio Sudo, Kubota, and two Nebulan agents from Godzilla vs. Gigan. The shadows of the Nebulan agents reveal their true forms.
**In the following scene, Mei observes her laptop screen which displays "TERZETTO," "GAMESOME" and "TIGERISH" backward, along with the letters O and D. Letters light up red to spell out the name of kaiju, including Godzilla, Rodan, "Meganuron," Anguirus and Manda. A video can then be seen paused on her screen, showing Yoshimura, Dayo, Yata and Ryota from Ebirah, Horror of the Deep with a Shockirus from The Return of Godzilla skewered on a pole.
**After this, a Godzilla footprint is shown stamped into a road. Ichiro Miki and Sanko from All Monsters Attack are seen being held back by police. Nearby, Yukio Keuchi, Miki Fujinomiya, Ken Yano, Toshie Yano, and Toru Yano from Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Sachiko from All Monsters Attack can be seen observing the footprint. In the corner of the frame, Shinpei Minami and Ichiro's parents Kenkichi and Tamie are standing behind a police barricade.
**The next scene shows a Showa-era Kumonga climbing on the front of a building, next to a sign with the Shobijin on it. On the ground, Zone Fighter, Zone Angel and Zone Junior from Zone Fighter, Namikawa from Invasion of Astro-Monster, and Hiromi Ogashira, the cleaning lady, and several board members from Shin Godzilla are among the onlookers.
**The next scene depicts the Shobijin from Godzilla Final Wars standing below Mothra, who flies a short distance away.
**In the next scene, King Caesar can be seen biting Manda in the middle of a city. Among the fleeing citizens are Keisuke Shimizu, Masahiko Shimizu, Saeko Kanagusuku, Nami Kunigami, Tengan Kunigami, Hideto Miyajima, Ikuko Miyajima, Nanbara and what resembles a Simian, all from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, as well as Niko Tatopoulos, Audrey Timmonds, Philippe Roaché, Lucy Palotti, Victor "Animal" Palotti, Mendel Craven, Elsie Chapman and Mayor Ebert from the 1998 GODZILLA.
**The next scene shows a damaged Showa Jet Jaguar holding Megalon's horn next to Kiryu, who turns his head backward similar to the Showa Mechagodzilla. Among the onlookers is the vagrant from The Return of Godzilla.
**In the penultimate scene, a Godzilla is seen picking up a train before firing his atomic breath into the distance. Characters resembling Naotaro Daigo from Godzilla Final Wars, Kyohei Yamane from the original Godzilla, and Steve Martin from Godzilla, King of the Monsters! stand in the foreground. The way that the glow from the fires reflects on Godzilla's chest resembles Burning Godzilla.
**Finally, Mei is seen back on her laptop in a coffee shop. Behind her, characters resembling Emiko Yamane and Hideto Ogata from the original Godzilla and Machiko Tsuge and Hayato Igarashi from the Kiryu series can be spotted sitting at tables together.

Godzilla Singular Point (ゴジラS.P (シンギュラポイント),   Gojira Shingyura Pointo)[a] is an animated television series funded by Toho and collaboratively animated by Bones and Orange[5] which debuted on Netflix in Japan on March 25, 2021 and began airing on Japanese television on April 1.[1] Netflix made the series available internationally beginning on June 24.[2]

Description

In the year 2030, Nigashio City, Chiba Prefecture.
Yun Arikawa of the local "multipurpose" Otaki Factory investigates clues in a European-style house, long thought abandoned.
Mei Kamino, a graduate student studying fantasy creatures, investigates mysterious signals received from the Old Tsuguno District administration bureau "Misakioku."
Two strangers, visiting completely different places as part of completely different investigations, both hear the same song.
This song brings the two together, and leads them into a battle beyond imagination which grips the whole world.
A mystery left behind by a lone researcher, monsters appearing across the globe, and a world dyed red.
Can these two face down the hopeless future (Godzilla) that threatens mankind...?[6]

Brought together by a mysterious song, a grad student and an engineer lead the fight against an unimaginable force that may spell doom for the world.[7]

Titles

The titles of each episode are exactly eight characters long, in both English and Japanese. The titles of the first 12 episodes can be arranged along the edges of a 3D cube (as seen below), such that the letters at each vertex spell out the 13th.

The title of the finale—"Together" in English or "はじまりのふたり" in Japanese—is formed by the first and last letters of the titles for episodes 1, 2, 3 and 12. This is indicated by the letters in bold.

Development

Planning on what would ultimately become Godzilla Singular Point began two to three years before its release, with the goal of capturing elements which had not yet been featured in the Godzilla series, inspired by the huge success of the 2016 film Shin Godzilla.[13] After viewing Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi, Toho producer Takashi Yoshizawa was impressed and offered director Atsushi Takahashi the opportunity to create a new story for a Godzilla anime from the ground up, with an emphasis on making it entertaining while incorporating science fiction elements.[14]

Toh EnJoe, who was recruited to handle the series' composition, wanted to ground the series in reality as much as possible while still incorporating sci-fi elements, an influence taken from the 2016 American film Arrival. Due to his prior experience on the anime series Space Dandy, EnJoe was sought out for the project by Bones president Masahiko Minami.[15][16][17] EnJoe was initially hired to simply supervise the series' sci-fi elements, but after working on the series long enough it was deemed unrealistic to hire another writer for the show and so EnJoe became the primary writer, handling both the show's story and script.[18] Eiji Yamamori, Kazue Kato, and Kan Sawada, all of whom had prior experience working with Takahashi on films such as Blue Exorcist: The Movie and Doraemon, joined the Godzilla anime's staff as well.[15]

It was Takahashi's idea to have the show's main characters confront Godzilla primarily using their minds, in contrast to previous main characters in the Godzilla series who were often involved with military organizations and attempted to fight Godzilla using weaponry.[13] While media in the Godzilla series typically features social commentary and messages reflecting the time in which it was produced, Singular Point downplayed any message as much as possible and focused on entertainment above anything else.[18] The show's creators were essentially given complete creative freedom in developing the series by Toho once production began, so long as the series involved Godzilla. As such, director Takahashi, writer EnJoe, and producers from Toho and Bones met to discuss and determine the outline and pacing of the series.[19][17] Discussions often revolved around whether to make the series a completely sci-fi-oriented story or a fantasy, with EnJoe ultimately deciding to have the story occur in a world that is an extension of modern reality in order to differentiate it from settings of past Godzilla films, including the GODZILLA anime trilogy.[17][15] As EnJoe's script contained a great deal of information that was difficult to visualize, the show's creators added action scenes, robots, and references to past Toho films in order to make the show more appealing to viewers.[13]

Early story ideas for the show included a focus on high school students as the main characters, Godzilla fighting other monsters around the world, or Godzilla battling samurai in feudal Japan.[16]

News of Godzilla Singular Point was leaked through Twitter by user @SugoiLITE on October 6, 2020.[20] An official announcement followed later that day (or October 7 in Japan).[3] Director Atsushi Takahashi, screenwriter Toh EnJoe, character designer Kazue Kato, monster designer Eiji Yamamori and composer Kan Sawada each provided brief statements on the series, with Yamamori mentioning the appearance of multiple monsters and dedicating his work to his late brother.[5] On October 12, it was announced that a panel for Singular Point would be held during Godzilla Fest Online 2020 on November 3, with guests including Takahashi, EnJoe, Bones producer Naoki Amano, Orange producer Jiro Ando and Toho producer Takashi Yoshizawa.[21] A new poster for the anime was released on October 26, along with three screenshots. A short trailer followed later that day, showing off many of the series' other kaiju besides Godzilla.

The series' full cast of characters and their voice actors leaked onto the internet on the morning of December 8, 2020.[22] Later that day (December 9 in Japan), they were revealed officially.[23]

On New Year's Day in Japan, the Singular Point Twitter revealed a new piece of concept art, giving a clearer look at Godzilla's face.[24] Two days later, the godzilla-sp.jp site was updated to include Kazue Kato's concept art of the show's human cast.[25]

A second PV was released on February 1, revealing new footage and the series' ending theme "Aoi" by the rock band Polkadot Stingray.

Concept art of Godzilla illustrated by Eiji Yamamori and colored by Yuji Kaneko was released on the night of February 11, giving the first full body look at the design.[26]

On February 18, it was announced that a Godzilla Singular Point panel would be held by stars Yume Miyamoto, Shoya Ishige, Misaki Kuno and Yohei Azakami at AnimeJapan 2021 on March 27.[27]

Several announcements were made on February 22, including the reveal of new key art and the name of the series' opening theme "in case..." performed by Japanese girl group BiSH. The series will debut on Netflix in Japan on March 25, ahead of its April television broadcast.[1]

The third promotional video for Godzilla Singular Point was released on March 9, giving the first glimpses at Godzilla in motion as well as several of the series' other monsters.

The first two episodes of the series were screened[28] at Toho Cinemas Hibiya in Tokyo[29] on March 19 as part of a "Completion Announcement Event." The event and first episode were also streamed on YouTube exclusively in Japan.[28]

Marketing

A collaboration between Godzilla Singular Point and the Japanese boat race Boat Race Amagasaki was announced on January 20, 2021 with details to follow in February.[30] A "Godzilla Singular Point Cup" race was held from March 10 to 15.[31] An official website for the collaboration, br-amagasaki-godzilla-sp.jp, was launched on February 8[32] along with a short promotional video for the event. Various pieces of merchandise were available to those who spent over 1,000 yen in online voting, with more given out as part of a raffle for those who bet on the six winning racers.[33]

Bandai Movie Monster Series figures of the Singular Point Godzilla and Jet Jaguar were announced on February 28, the former revealing a new name of "Godzilla Ultima."[34] Additional figures, including those of Anguirus and Manda, were reported by SciFi Japan on March 13.[35]

Various Singular Point clothing items were announced on March 16.[36] Two days later, it was announced that additional merchandise would be made available for online purchase during AnimeJapan 2021.[37]

The first images of the Bandai Anguirus and Manda figures surfaced online on March 19.[38] Both figures, as well as a third of Godzilla Aquatilis, were officially revealed on April 15.

On May 6, the full version of the series' opening theme "in case..." was released on streaming services along with an accompanying music video.[39] The same day, Bandai announced a Movie Monster Series figure for Godzilla Amphibia.[40]

On May 19, it was announced that the series' soundtrack will be released on July 21.[41] The following day, three Blu-ray and DVD sets were announced with the first set to release on August 18.[42]

Notes

 1. While the characters "S.P" would normally be read as esupī (エスピー), the furigana 「シンギュラポイント」 in the title indicates their pronunciation as Shingyura Pointo ("Singular Point"). In the absence of furigana, the title may be written with angle brackets as 「ゴジラS.P<シンギュラポイント>」. The series' official logo capitalizes its English title as "Godzilla Singular point."
 2. 2.0 2.1 Episodes 1 and 2 premiered ahead of their Netflix release at a screening on March 19.
 3. While the robot in episode 13's final scene goes unidentified, the context, its shape, and the number "3" written on its side indicates that it is meant to be Pelops III.
