Yuji Shinoda (Godzilla 2000: Millennium)

Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is a kaiju who appeared in the 1999 Godzilla film Godzilla 2000: Millennium.

The first incarnation of the character to appear in the Millennium era, this Godzilla first appeared sometime after the original Godzilla's demise in 1954, and continually menaced Japan over the years. During a confrontation with the JSDF in Tokai, Godzilla was attacked by a gigantic flying rock, which blasted him into the ocean with a powerful laser beam fired from a hole on its side. Yuji Shinoda, aided by his former colleague Shiro Miyasaka, analyzed some of Godzilla's discarded flesh, and discovered that his cells contained a substance they called Organizer G-1, which allowed his tissue to heal entirely within a matter of hours. They believed this discovery could revolutionize modern medicine and reveal the secret to immortality. Shinoda and Miyasaka also learned that the flying rock from earlier was actually an alien spaceship, whose occupants planned to harness the power of Godzilla's Organizer G-1 to adapt to Earth's atmosphere and establish a thousand-year empire. Godzilla returned for a rematch with the UFO in Shinjuku, where he was subdued and his Organizer G-1 was forcibly extracted. The aliens exited the UFO in a combined form, but the Organizer G-1 quickly overwhelmed them, mutating them into the monster known as Orga. Godzilla fought Orga, with his enemy's healing speed exceeding his own and rendering Orga nearly impossible to kill. Godzilla eventually allowed himself to be swallowed headfirst by Orga, who was attempting to engulf and fully assimilate him, only to unleash a powerful atomic shockwave that beheaded and killed Orga. With the alien invasion thwarted, Godzilla turned his rage on the rest of Tokyo, setting the city ablaze with his atomic breath.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

This specific iteration of Godzilla is sometimes referred to as the Millennium Godzilla (ミレニアムゴジラ,   Mireniamu Gojira), or MireGoji (ミレゴジ) for short, referencing the title of the film in which he appeared, Godzilla 2000: Millennium.

Design

The Godzilla in Godzilla 2000: Millennium bears a distinct new appearance that differentiates him from previous incarnations. While all previous incarnations of Godzilla had been a charcoal gray in color, this Godzilla has dark green skin. The dorsal fins are different as well, as they are incredibly large and jagged and are now purple in color as opposed to the traditional bone-white. This Godzilla was made to look more reptilian in appearance, with very prominent scales on his body, and a thinner head with a long snout and sharp teeth.

The Godzilla from Godzilla vs. Megaguirus looks almost identical to this Godzilla, due to being portrayed by the same suit.

Personality

This incarnation of Godzilla retains the destructive anti-hero persona of the Heisei Godzilla, menacing Japan and battling the JSDF before fending off a much greater threat, in this case Orga. The destruction caused by this Godzilla appears to be somewhat deliberate, as Yuji Shinoda remarks that it seems Godzilla is intentionally destroying mankind's energy sources. This Godzilla is more hesitant to retaliate against the military than the Heisei Godzilla, as he withstands an entire assault from the JSDF without ever fighting back, only beginning to charge his atomic breath after being injured by Full Metal Missile Launchers.

This Godzilla displays a degree of strategy during his battle with Orga. After Orga is shown quickly regenerating from all of Godzilla's attacks, Godzilla allows Orga to begin to swallow him headfirst once he unhinges his jaw, allowing him to destroy Orga from the inside with a blast of atomic energy.

Origins

The origins of this Godzilla are never discussed in Godzilla 2000: Millennium. All that is established is that this Godzilla had been menacing Japan for some time prior to the film's events. According to Godzilla.jp, Toho's official website dedicated to the Godzilla series, this Godzilla is the second Godzilla to appear in the continuity of Godzilla 2000: Millennium, after the 1954 Godzilla.

History

Millennium era

Godzilla 2000: Millennium

One night, Godzilla came ashore at Nemuro in Hokkaido, destroying a lighthouse and making his way into the heart of the city. Eventually, Godzilla reached an electrical plant and destroyed it. Yuji Shinoda, founder of the Godzilla Prediction Network (GPN), remarked that it appeared Godzilla was intentionally destroying mankind's energy sources. Godzilla returned to the ocean, and began to approach Tokai, most likely to feed on the nuclear power plant there. Mitsuo Katagiri, head of the government agency Crisis Control Intelligence, ordered the plant's reactors to shut down and mobilized the JSDF at Tokai to engage Godzilla. The JSDF deployed its new cutting-edge Full Metal Missile Launchers, which fired armor-piercing missiles which were believed to be able to penetrate Godzilla's hide. Shinoda traveled to Tokai and confronted Katagiri, telling him Godzilla deserved to be studied rather than destroyed, and that there was no way he could kill Godzilla anyway. Katagiri laughed and told Shinoda he would have GPN dismantled before leaving. The next morning, Godzilla swam close to the shore of Tokai, detonating mines in the water. Godzilla finally surfaced and began approaching the shore, withstanding artillery and missile fire from the JSDF and J.A.S.D.F. with no visible reaction. As Godzilla drew closer to the nuclear plant, the Full Metal Missile Launchers opened fire on him. This time, Godzilla was visibly fazed by the missiles, with chunks of his skin being blown off. While Godzilla was being blasted by the missiles, a gigantic floating rock flew over the battlefield and began scanning Godzilla. It proceeded to fire a laser beam from a hole on its side, knocking Godzilla into a building. Godzilla got up and fired his atomic breath at the rock, which fired another laser beam and knocked Godzilla into the ocean. Godzilla swam away, while the rock flew off into the distance. Shinoda returned and surveyed the battlefield, recovering some of Godzilla's flesh that had been blasted off by the missiles. Using CCI's electron microscope, Shinoda and his former colleague Shiro Miyasaka discovered that Godzilla's cells had completely healed in a matter of hours with no scar tissue. They learned the secret to Godzilla's regeneration was a substance in his cells called Organizer G-1, which granted him virtually limitless regeneration that made him practically immortal.

The rock was later discovered to be an advanced alien UFO, which was attempting to subdue Godzilla and transfer his genetic material to its occupants so they could adjust to Earth's atmosphere. The UFO descended in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo and used the City Tower to hack into the city's computer systems, draining all data it could find on Godzilla. After CCI's attempts to destroy the UFO failed, Godzilla emerged from Tokyo Bay to challenge the UFO again. Godzilla walked through downtown Tokyo until he reached Shinjuku. The UFO, still intending to subdue Godzilla, tried to restrain him with tentacles it telepathically formed beneath the street, but Godzilla destroyed them with his atomic breath. The UFO then released a shockwave that caused a skyscraper to collapse onto Godzilla, trapping him beneath the rubble. The ship began absorbing Godzilla's DNA and transferring it to its occupants, which emerged from the UFO in a single collective form. The alien suddenly began convulsing as its body became covered in growths and it finally collapsed to the ground. Godzilla broke free from the rubble and blasted the unmanned UFO, sending it crashing to the ground in a fireball. Just then, the alien stood back up, now mutated into the creature Orga due to its inability to control Godzilla's DNA. Godzilla immediately attacked Orga, but discovered the creature's healing factor was far more advanced than his own. Godzilla tried to blast Orga with his atomic breath, but Orga telepathically summoned the remnants of his UFO, using it to absorb the blast. With the UFO completely destroyed, Godzilla fired his atomic breath at Orga again, causing the beast to be consumed in flames. To Godzilla's surprise, Orga emerged from the fire and began walking toward him, with his gruesome injuries healing in a matter of seconds. Orga bit Godzilla and began draining his DNA, causing him to become covered in green Godzilla-like scales. Godzilla realized that Orga was trying to absorb more of his DNA in order to repair his damaged DNA matrix and become a clone of him. When Orga unhinged his jaw and opened his mouth wide, Godzilla ran headfirst into his maw. Orga began swallowing Godzilla whole, sprouting huge purple dorsal fins on his back. As Orga consumed Godzilla, Godzilla began glowing hot orange and giving off heat. When Orga realized his situation, it was too late as Godzilla unleashed an atomic shockwave that obliterated Orga's entire upper body. Godzilla roared at Orga's headless corpse, which collapsed forward and crumbled to dust. Godzilla then approached a rooftop where several people, including Shinoda and Katagiri were standing. Katagiri refused to move, and lit a cigarette as he remarked he had never seen Godzilla that close before. Katagiri looked up at Godzilla and screamed his name, as Godzilla destroyed the rooftop and sent Katagiri falling to his death. Godzilla turned and walked away, unleashing his atomic breath in a fiery swath across the city. As Godzilla rampaged through Tokyo, Miyasaka remarked that humanity created Godzilla, and ever since has tried to destroy him. Yuki Ichinose, a reporter, questioned why Godzilla kept protecting them despite this fact, with Shinoda answering it was because Godzilla was inside each one of them.

Abilities

Atomic breath

Godzilla fires his atomic breath

As with other incarnations of Godzilla, this Godzilla's signature ability is his atomic breath. This Godzilla's atomic breath is unique in that, rather than being a whitish mist or blue beam, it is a fiery orange color. This version of Godzilla's atomic breath appears to be more incendiary in nature than previous versions, producing a fiery explosion whenever it is used. Whenever Godzilla charges his atomic breath, his dorsal fins glow orange and give off intense heat.

Nuclear Pulse

Godzilla uses his nuclear pulse to destroy Orga

This Godzilla possesses what appears to be a variation of the Heisei Godzilla's nuclear pulse ability. This ability is seen only once in the film, when Orga attempts to swallow Godzilla whole. Godzilla's dorsal fins begin to glow and give off heat, then the rest of his body begins to do the same. Godzilla then unleashes a fiery shockwave of atomic energy from all directions, obliterating Orga. This ability is also present in the video games Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and Godzilla: Save the Earth.

Durability

Organizer G-1, the secret to Godzilla's durability

One of the most distinctive traits of this Godzilla is his durability. This version of Godzilla possesses a substance called Organizer G-1 (or Regenerator G-1 in the American version) in his cells, which is the key to his uncanny durability. Organizer G-1 allows Godzilla's cells and tissues to heal completely over a matter of hours with no scar tissue, even when they are not attached to his body. This is demonstrated when some of Godzilla's skin is blasted off by Full Metal Missiles, and recovered by Yuji Shinoda. When Shinoda examines the skin samples under a microscope, he discovers that all damage to them has been healed. By this logic, Shinoda hypothesizes that Godzilla holds the secret to immortality.

The Millennian aliens attempted to exploit Godzilla's durability in order to take on a form capable of surviving and thriving in the Earth's atmosphere. The Millennians used their UFO to restrain Godzilla and drain his Organizer G-1, then took on a collective form and incorporated the Organizer G-1 into it. However, the Millennian could not withstand the volatile properties of the Organizer G-1, and mutated into Orga. Despite being deformed and corrupted, Orga did gain a potent healing factor, potentially more effective than Godzilla's, that allowed him to heal any and all injuries almost instantaneously. However, Orga's healing factor did not appear to be as perfect as Godzilla's, as the monster's shoulder cannon was not present when he regenerated his shoulder after Godzilla's atomic breath damaged it.

Intelligence

Godzilla displays a fair degree of intelligence during his battle with Orga, which allows him to overcome his foe. When Orga instantly heals from all damage Godzilla has inflicted on him and attempts to swallow Godzilla whole, Godzilla lets him do so, giving Godzilla the opportunity to destroy Orga from within using a shockwave of atomic energy.

Fireball

Godzilla spits a fireball at Gigan in Godzilla: Save the Earth.

In the Pipeworks Godzilla video games, Godzilla 2000 can spit balls of fire from his mouth that explode on impact. This ability is shared among all the Godzillas that showed up in the games.

Weaknesses

Like all incarnations of Godzilla, the Godzilla from Godzilla 2000: Millennium is immune to conventional human weaponry. Godzilla is injured by the Full Metal Missiles, experimental armor-piercing missiles specifically designed to penetrate Godzilla's armored skin. However, the injury is not serious, and Godzilla's healing factor allows him to quickly recover from the damage. The Millennian UFO's laser cannon also appears to be effective against Godzilla, at one point blasting him directly into the ocean and forcing him to retreat.

Godzilla 2000 Bio

"Godzilla is the most powerful of Earth's Defenders. Godzilla lives beneath the ocean's waves, slumbering until he is called upon to face some fearsome threat. Although he has often defended the Earth from aliens, mutants, and other external threats, Godzilla has never included "humans" in the list of things he deliberately protects. To the contrary, it is often human folly that arouses Godzilla's ire. Because of this fact, the Global Defense Force considers Godzilla to be an extremely dangerous potential adversary. Godzilla uses his atomic fire to destroy most threats from a distance, but has proved to be a fearsome hand-to-hand combatant, especially when he can bring his powerful tail into play. Godzilla's most mysterious ability may be his uncanny sixth sense, which always gives him time to travel to exactly where he needs to be."

Roar

At the start of the Millennium series, Godzilla emitted slowed-down and lower-pitched versions of the Showa Godzilla's roars, which remained consistent for the character throughout the era. In the American version of Godzilla 2000: Millennium, Godzilla uses some of the TriStar Godzilla's roars.

Trivia

  • This is the first incarnation of Godzilla in a film to actually be green in color. Godzilla has traditionally been depicted as being green on posters and in numerous official non-film media, but his skin color in the films had always been a charcoal gray at the time of Godzilla 2000: Millennium's release. In addition, this is the first incarnation of Godzilla in a film whose atomic breath is the color of fire, while he has often been shown breathing literal fire on posters and in non-film media.
  • It is sometimes assumed that this incarnation of Godzilla reappeared in the second film of the Millennium series, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, due to possessing the same design and numerous other similar characteristics. However, that is a different incarnation of Godzilla, as Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is set in a separate continuity from Godzilla 2000: Millennium.
  • It is often mistakenly believed that this Godzilla is meant to be the adult Godzilla Junior, who was shown being revived as an adult and taking his father's place at the end of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. This is untrue, as Godzilla 2000: Millennium is a direct sequel to the original 1954 film, and is not connected to the Heisei series. This incarnation of Godzilla is described by Godzilla.jp, Toho's official website for the Godzilla series, as the second Godzilla to appear in the film's continuity, after the 1954 Godzilla, while Godzilla Junior was the third Godzilla in the Heisei continuity.
