Godzilla Super Wars (ゴジラ 最大の決戦,   Gojira Saidai no Kessen, lit. Godzilla: The Greatest Battle) is a story proposal draft for the sixth Heisei Godzilla film. It carries over many elements featured in the earlier Godzilla vs. AstroGodzilla and Godzilla vs. NeoGodzilla stories, and would itself be further refined into what ultimately became Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.

History

Development on Godzilla 6 began with the concept of Godzilla battling a malevolent extraterrestrial kaiju, which would persist until the final product. The original idea featured an alien King Ghidorah dubbed "Emperor Ghidorah" who would be a completely separate individual from the King Ghidorah featured in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. Emperor Ghidorah was dropped in order to avoid similarity to Yamata no Orochi from Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon, which was also in development at the time. A later idea, Godzilla vs. AstroGodzilla, introduced the concept of Godzilla's enemy being an alien clone of him born from his cells that were cast into outer space. Shinichiro Kobayashi wrote a story treatment titled Godzilla vs. NeoGodzilla that further developed the alien Godzilla clone antagonist, introducing the idea for it to be crystalline in nature.

Godzilla Super Wars was a story proposal draft written after Godzilla vs. NeoGodzilla, building on ideas introduced in previous proposals. It is highly reminiscent of the finished film, notably introducing the antagonist monster's final name, SpaceGodzilla. It features many of the same story beats and elements of the finished Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, but all of the characters except for Miki Saegusa are different. Major differences stem from this story being considerably more complex than that of the final film. For example, NASA first learns of SpaceGodzilla's threat by discovering a derelict spacecraft covered in crystalline material containing the corpse of an alien being. A signal transmitted from the ship's radio is translated and revealed to be a warning from an alien warning other planets about SpaceGodzilla after its planet was destroyed by the monster. Most notably, Godzilla Super Wars features a race of giant alien dragonflies which serve and worship SpaceGodzilla, abducting LittleGodzilla on his behalf in order to lure Godzilla to a deathtrap set by his extraterrestrial clone. It also features Mechagodzilla and Garuda, both rebuilt by G-Force following the events of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. A new Super X is also utilized as a mode of transportation by the characters. SpaceGodzilla's physical appearance is described in this story and differs from the character's final design. He is also depicted as considerably more powerful in this story, having already wiped out the advanced civilizations of numerous other planets before making his way to Earth, and possessing some different abilities such as both an atomic breath and a beam that can crystalize any matter. The story contains numerous references to Western literature and mythology, and at some points describes the thoughts of the monsters.

While many elements from Godzilla Super Wars were carried over into the finished film, the overall story was tweaked significantly for Hiroshi Kashiwabara's final screenplay. The film's cast of characters was heavily altered while still playing a similar role, and many plot elements were either trimmed down or excised completely, presumably for budgetary reasons. Director of special effects Koichi Kawakita lobbied to include a new version of Moguera from The Mysterians, which was one of his favorite monsters, in place of Mechagodzilla and eventually won out. Minoru Yoshida created concept art for SpaceGodzilla, ultimately basing the final design on Super Godzilla, a form of Godzilla from the 1993 video game of the same name.
