Godzilla Ultima (ゴジラウルティマ is a Gojira Urutima)daikaiju who will appear in the 2021 Toho animated series, Godzilla Singular Point.
Name
Godzilla Ultima's name comes from the Latin ultima, a form of the word ultimus meaning "last." The name "Godzilla" is an official English transliteration of the name "Gojira." A combination of the Japanese words gorira (ゴリラ), meaning gorilla, and kujira (鯨), meaning whale, it was given to the creature from the original film due to one of the film's concepts describing it as "a cross between a gorilla and a whale."
An ancient depiction of the folklore creature Gojira spells his name in kanji as 古史羅, incorporating the Japanese word for "ancient history": koshi (古史). This spelling differs from that used for Godzilla in the 1954 film and Shin Godzilla, which was written 呉爾羅 but pronounced the same. Because 古史 is typically pronounced koshi rather than goji in modern Japanese, Mei Kamino and Yun Arikawa both misread the name as "Koshira."
Japanese fans have nicknamed this Godzilla GyuraGoji (ギュラゴジ), which is derived from Singular Point's title, specifically "Singular" (シンギュラ, and Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira Shingyura) (ゴジラ).
