As an enduring and iconic symbol of post-World War II Japanese cinematic history, Godzilla is frequently referenced and parodied in popular culture. Godzilla and other icons of the kaiju genre have appeared in a variety of mediums ranging from cartoons, films, literature, television series, comics and video games. Often it is Godzilla's name, his design and/or the style of his films (e.g., where he demolishes cities) that is parodied the most. Godzilla's name is also often referenced by attaching the suffix "-zilla" to a word and/or phrase in order to denote size or monstrous/destructive behavior. The following is a list of such references, organized in alphabetical order. While this page aims to be comprehensive, due to the broad subject matter, it is always ever-growing.

Pinky and the Brain "Tokyo Grows" 1995/11/24 This episode contains a plethora of nods to Godzilla and the 1956 U.S. version of the original 1954 film Godzilla known as Godzilla, King of the Monsters!. It takes place in Tokyo, Japan in the year 1956 at Acmeshita Labs (a play on Acme Labs, Pinky and the Brain's home and base of operations). In order to take over the world, Brain plans to use a shrinking ray in the lab which he converts into an enlarging ray to turn Pinky (dressed up as "Gollyzilla") and himself (using the name "Brainodo") into giants so that "Gollyzilla" can go on a rampage and "Brainodo" can save Japan, after which Brain expects that the Japanese people will thank him by making him their ruler; however, the real Gollyzilla appears as well and hilarity ensues. In the end, the ray eventually is damaged and goes haywire, shooting out rays in all directions and enlarging anything and everything around it (including Earth) so that the lab mice, even though they are still giants, are small once more in comparison to everything else around them. There are also a number of cutaways featuring a nameless Raymond Burr stand-in who says only "Yes, I see" several times throughout the episode. In addition, all of the human characters' lines in the episode (except for the Burr stand-in) are out of sync, a parody of a common trope in Japanese giant monster films.

1999/05/16 Throughout the episode, the names of various kaiju can be seen written in katakana on signs and paintings, including Mothra, Anguirus, Ebirah, and Barugon. As the Simpson family departs from Tokyo via airplane, a sudden attack by four famous kaiju prompts routine assurances by an unfazed pilot. Upon their escape, the scene reveals Gamera, Rodan, Mothra and Godzilla all roaring into the sky.

"Treehouse of

2015/10/25 A giant monster resembling Homer, named Homerzilla, emerges from the ocean after an old man who had been dropping him donuts suddenly died and could no longer appease him. By the present day, a Homerzilla film has been produced and a board of executives seek to remake it as a Hollywood blockbuster. The resulting film, titled Zilla, is a box office failure. Defeated, the executives dump all the promotions into the ocean, reawakening Homerzilla in the process. An onscreen message explains that Homerzilla will one day return just as soon as the Zilla film is forgotten. This episode is likely a jab at the 1998 GODZILLA film and its featured incarnation of Godzilla, who was later reintroduced as Zilla and is still often referred to as such by Godzilla fans.

"Map of Mayhem" 2004/02/22 "Map of Mayhem," titled "The Great Latitude Zero Battle" in Japan, references the film Latitude Zero both through its title, which is only one kanji off from the film's Japanese title, and its title card, which mimics both the film's title card and the famous Toho logo. The episode begins with an aquatic research vessel called the Seahawk going missing, a clear nod to the submarine of the same name from King Kong vs. Godzilla. A scientist named Dr. Atsumi, played by Kenji Sahara and possibly named after the character Joji Atsumi from The Mysterians, is researching a lost civilization known as "Murasia," similar to Mu from Atragon. The episode features a scene where characters depart via boat as part of an investigation party, which is framed similarly to scenes depicting the same situation from the original 1954 Godzilla and Mothra. When the party reaches their destination at Latitude Zero, they are attacked by the villainous Dr. Eggman's battleship, the Egg Giant Makan, which is clearly both named and designed after the Daimakan from The War in Space. The Egg Giant Makan is even armed with a laser weapon heavily resembling the turret of a Maser Cannon. The Egg Giant Makan is then engaged by the GUN Fort, a drill-nosed multipurpose warship clearly modeled after the Gotengo, also from Atragon.

"The Volcanic Venture" 2004/02/29 "The Volcanic Venture" has its Japanese title, "Sonic vs. the Subterranean Monster," taken from that of Frankenstein vs. Baragon, while the title card mimics that of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. This episode is also filled with Godzilla and Toho references, including a giant moth named Mothmacin which is obviously based on Mothra and a giant robot called Mongroun which is the spitting image of the Showa Moguera. A statue of Godzilla is briefly seen before seismic activity causes it to collapse. Atsumi further discusses the sunken Murasian civilizations and mentions that they worshiped dragons, while an ancient relief is shown onscreen depicting a giant serpentine dragon clearly resembling Manda.

Later on, Chet gets lost in a toy store and accidentally activates both a giant robot toy and a giant kaiju toy (the second toy is a hybrid of Godzilla, Gigan and Guiron) which then terrorize him in a toy city. The giant kaiju toy mimics Godzilla and also uses the Showa Godzilla's roar. The giant kaiju toy would use Godzila's tail-sliding kick from Godzilla vs. Megalon on the giant robot toy, then focuses its attention on the giant robot toy as Chet flees from the scene.

Note: This is the only episode in this series that is a half-hour long.

  • Rodan's roar appeared in two episodes of the anime Naruto. The first time was in an episode when Naruto farts on Kiba's face and Kiba screams with Rodan's roar. The second time, when Konohamaru calls Sakura "Naruto's girlfriend", she lets out Rodan's roar and punches Naruto.
  • In many episodes of Phineas and Ferb, a Godzilla-like creature has made many appearances.
  • In the popular 1980s sci-fi sitcom ALF, there are many references to Godzilla:
    • In an episode of Season 2, ALF enters the Tanners' living room and changes the channel on the TV, stating "It's "Godzilla Week" on Channel 6!". He exclaims "They're showing Godzilla vs. the Thing, Godzilla vs. King Kong, and Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster!". After watching for a few seconds, he sees one of the monsters (ironically, one not even from a Godzilla film at all) roaring at the screen and quickly runs from the room, screaming in fear as he does.
    • In an episode of Season 3, Kate uses Godzilla's attack on Tokyo in the original film to explain how an earthquake works to ALF. In another episode from the same season, ALF refers to a pregnant Kate as "Crabzilla" in reference to her recent moodiness.
    • In an episode of Season 4, when Kate asks ALF to leave the room (something ALF is asked to do a lot in the series), the alien retorts "You didn't say "Godzilla says!"". When Kate gives him "the look", ALF quickly reconsiders and says "But perhaps I...didn't hear!", then beats a hasty retreat to the kitchen.
  • In an episode of the Comedy Central series Tosh.0, during a video of a reckless driver crashing into several people and vehicles, host Daniel Tosh proposes that the driver may have been trying to escape from Godzilla, as a brief clip of Godzilla roaring from King Kong vs. Godzilla is shown.
  • In the anime Bakugan, there are many references to Godzilla:
    • In Episode 17 of Season 1, when Drago was about to defeat Tentaclear, he had his regular roar, but it was mixed with Godzilla's.
    • The Bakugan Mantris greatly resembles Kamacuras.
    • The primary antagonist of Season 1 of Masquerade resembles the Xiliens.
    • The third evolution of the Bakugan Hydranoid, Alpha Hydranoid, shares many similarities with King Ghidorah (and a few with Godzilla): they had a past as the primary villain but then turned good, they are three-headed alien dragons, and they have electricity-based powers and also human-like masters.
    • If one combines both Episodes 15 and 33 of Season 2, a story very similar to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is shown: a known hero from the past seems to act weirdly and be evil (Godzilla and Hydranoid), then another good character (Anguirus and Ingram) notices this and attacks it, destroying its fake skin and revealing its mechanical identity (Mechagodzilla and Hades). The good character re-attacks, but it fails and is defeated. Then after these events, the real hero (Godzilla and Hydranoid) fights against his mechanical counterpart with an Asian-style monster on his side (King Caesar and Fortress) and successfully defeats it.
  • In the Super Sentai series Gosei Sentai Dairanger, the Super Mythical Chi Beast Daimugen, while in turtle form, uses the roar of Anguirus.
  • In episode 0 of the Chinese Donghua Dragon Raja, the main character Lu Mingfei tells a story about a giant robotic warrior on a distant planet named “Godzilla”.

The giant fire-breathing kaiju Saurous from the video game Monster Attack and its sequel Global Defence Force, also romanized as "Solas" in the English-language PlayStation Vita remake of Global Defence Force titled Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space, is clearly based on classic tokusatsu monsters, specifically Godzilla. The monster even has a cyborg form dubbed "Mecha-Saurous," a clear nod to Mechagodzilla. The official Earth Defense Force series Twitter page has acknowledged this resemblance by tweeting a screenshot of Saurous containing the text "Shin Saurous" (シン・ソラス,   Shin Sorasu), obviously referencing Shin Godzilla.

Sonic Advance 2001/12/20 The boss of Angel Island Zone, Mecha Knuckles, initially wears a disguise mimicking the real Knuckles. When damaged enough, the robot sheds its disguise and reveals its true colors. This battle is most likely an homage to the original Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla film, where Mechagodzilla initially wears a Godzilla disguise before shedding it upon taking enough damage. Mecha Knuckles' true form shares some design elements with Mechagodzilla, such as its gray body, large pupil-less eyes, and the joints on its tail which are reminiscent of Mechagodzilla's arm and leg joints. Additionally, it attacks using missiles after being exposed much like Mechagodzilla did.

Sonic Frontiers 2022/11/08 In a cutscene transitioning to the first boss (Giganto's second phase), Giganto bends over as numerous implants come out of his back, which then fire an array of laser beams into the sky. This bears a striking resemblance to Godzilla in Shin Godzilla, specifically his fourth form when he fired his dorsal fin beams. Giganto also fires a beam from outside of his mouth that is similar to Godzilla's atomic breath, but is colored like Mechagodzilla's Proton Scream in Godzilla vs. Kong.

The Buzzing Jim Knipfel 2003/03/11 This satirical suspense novel follows the trials and tribulations of tabloid reporter Roscoe Baragon, who stumbles upon a vast and equally confusing conspiracy involving aliens, mad science, unnatural earthquakes, and a mysterious realty company staffed by toga wearers reminiscent of the Seatopians from Godzilla vs. Megalon. The novel makes several allusions to the Godzilla franchise, notably the lead character's last name, but the connections virtually vanish as the story advances. The Ultraman monster Skydon appears on the cover.
Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich Godzilla illustration.png
Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich Adam Rex 2006/09/01 One of the poems featured in this collection of parody poems centered around famous movie monsters, "Godzilla Pooped on My Honda", features a narrator expressing regret about moving to Tokyo due to multiple humorous kaiju-related incidents. The incidents, in order of occurrence, include King Ghidorah fighting an unnamed turtle kaiju (possibly Gamera) and kaiju being exposed as giant men in suits, giant robots crushing their mailbox, Mothra eating their Sunday clothes, and Godzilla defecating on their car. The poem is accompanied by simple illustrations of the heads of King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Godzilla, and the next page showcases Godzilla fighting Mothra with King Ghidorah and two giant robots rampaging around, all while a woman stares in disbelief at what is presumably her car covered in Godzilla's feces.

Later when trying to ask Elke, their goth classmate interested in the supernatural for help in their investigations, she brushes them off by telling them to search online. Audrey responds by pointing out how internet misinformation isn't going to help much and sarcastically declares that lizard people are taking over streaming services to exclusively show Godzilla content. Elke responds with a remark that the lizard people probably find Godzilla to be an aspirational figure.

After chasing Vlad through various permutations of vampire, Frankenstein and werewolf films, Elvira finds herself in the titular Monsterland of the 1968 film "Destruct All Kaiju" and encounters various kaiju such as "Kingzilla", "Kingya", "Crowdan", "Maripothra" and "Dungenuss". Additionally spotted in her arrival are an unaltered Gorosaurus and Anguirus. While Vlad cannot control the monsters directly, he plans on working with the Murderlaaks to recruit them instead after they gas the island so that they can put in their mind control devices. Elvira ends up battling the kaiju with the use of a Mecha-Elvira that is provided to her, using fighting tactics that she learned from watching Ultraman on TV.

Lawsuits by Toho

Toho enforces its rights to the Godzilla character and trademark very strictly.

  • Toho forced Adler Fels Winery of Napa Valley to dump an undisclosed amount of wine for using the Godzilla image without permission.[9]
  • Toho sued the submarine sandwich company Subway for allegedly infringing on their copyrights on Godzilla. Subway released an advertisement that was part of their "Five Dollar Footlong" series where a giant green reptilian monster attacks a city in it.[10]
  • Toho sued NOLA Brewing over their "MechaHopzilla" beer line, which uses a character very similar to Mechagodzilla.[11]
  • Toho sued Voltage Pictures over their film Colossal, which was described by the filmmakers as a "cross between Godzilla and Being John Malkovich." Toho claimed that not only did the filmmakers frequently reference Godzilla when discussing their film, even calling it "a Godzilla film" in interviews, but blatantly used the design and characteristics of Godzilla in the marketing for the film.[12]
