Hannya ( (はん) (にゃ) or ハンニャ, lit. prajna) are a kind of mask used in Japanese Noh theater, depicting the face of a female demon. Personified versions of this mask appear in Daiei's 1968 yokai films Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters and Spook Warfare, and episode 9 of the 1974 tokusatsu series Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka, entitled "Cursed Demon Hannya."

Name

"Hannya" is a Sino-Japanese transliteration of the Sanskrit "prajna," meaning wisdom. Hannya's name is spelled entirely in kanji in the Yokai Monsters series, while Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka spells it in katakana.

Design

In Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka, Hannya is a white-pink skinned demon with horns and long white hair. Her facial expression greatly resembles the Hannya masks upon which she is based, and she wears a pink, red and white kimono.

"Cursed Demon Hannya"

Hannya was approached by Coonjo, who requested that she aid her in conspiring against her archenemy, Kotaro Ushiwaka. Hannya drew a depiction of Kotaro and nailed it to a tree, driving her cursed spikes through its legs. The real Kotaro, who was walking through the woods with Uragira, suddenly fell to the ground crippled. Hannya and Coonjo then appeared before the pair, the former threatening to throw a spike at Uragira if he didn't back down. As Coonjo prepared to strike, Kotaro reached for his naginata, but it was kicked away by Hannya. Luckily, Nyudo, who was also traversing the nearby forest, stumbled upon the drawing of Kotaro and ripped it from the tree, lifting the curse from Kotaro's legs. Kotaro quickly parried the approaching Coonjo, who fled the scene in defeat. Hannya, angered, attempted to throw a spike at Kotaro, but it was deflected by his naginata and sent flying into her forehead, killing her.

Abilities

Cursed spikes

In Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka, Hannya possesses a number of cursed spikes (呪い釘,   noroi kugi) which she can drive through the body parts of a drawn figure to cause harm to the person depicted. She used this by drawing an image of Kotaro and driving spikes through the image's legs to cripple the real Kotaro. Hannya can also use the spikes as a weapon, throwing one at Kotaro after he regained functionality of his legs.

Teleportation

In Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka, Hannya was shown to be able to teleport, as she suddenly appeared before Kotaro and Uragira alongside Coonjo.

Weaknesses

In Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka, Hannya was ultimately killed by one of her own cursed spikes, which impaled her through the forehead after being deflected by Kotaro's naginata.
