The Hollow Earth is a discredited concept proposing that Earth is hollow or that it contains a substantial interior space. Several works of fiction have been made about the concept, including the inclusion of the Hollow Earth as a recurring location in the Monsterverse. First theorized to exist in Kong: Skull Island (2017), it subsequently appeared in both Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and will return as a major location in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). It is made up of cave-like tunnels and passages that lead to a large, inner world. It is held by Monarch to be the evolutionary source of the Titans. Known entrances to the Hollow Earth include Skull Island, the Mariana Trench, and Antarctica.

In the Monsterverse, the Hollow Earth is a vast region that sports many kinds of terrain. Godzilla: King of the Monsters reveals that it is a massive subterranean tunnel system that connects all over the planet and can be accessed through vortexes, such as underwater whirlpools. The Hollow Earth contains the ruins of an ancient human civilization that once coexisted with the Titans, with many statues, murals depicting various Titans, and the wreckage of many ancient ships. The entrance to Godzilla's lair has a large archway with a river of lava flowing out. The interior contains the same architecture, rivers of lava flowing from the ceiling and walls, and a large altar on which the large Titan sleeps.
In Godzilla Dominion, it is shown that Godzilla had an older lair located in the Hollow Earth that he was driven out of by a member of Kong's species known only as "the rival." The underwater tunnel system that connected to this old lair leads to a main entrance that has water geysers coming from the ceiling. After Godzilla goes further into a cave with lava coming from the ceiling, a statue of Godzilla, and drawings of Godzilla on the walls, the Titan arrives in a pocket that contains ruins of the same architecture seen from his now destroyed previous lair.
In Kingdom Kong, Camazotz had lived in a dark cave located within the Hollow Earth on Skull Island.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, it was revealed that there was an even deeper part that is the main Hollow Earth, which can only be accessed by swirling blue space-time distortions[1] known as a Vile Vortex.[2] These vortexes then lead to a realm with terrain on both the ground and the ceiling, and a middle area with glowing blue stones floating in a low gravity zone. The ground of the Hollow Earth glows the same blue the floating rocks emit. The Hollow Earth is home to many terrains, one of which is littered with various mountains, volcanoes, forests of all foliage, and waterfalls. Another one of these terrains is a rocky terrain with barely any foliage, which Rockclaws use to hide from predators. This area also had a carved-out hand and Great Ape statue to signify where those related to Kong used to live. The temple that Great Apes formerly used sits atop in a giant mountain, with swirling storm clouds to the top, and glowing the same blue color. The doors to this temple have a red handprint on them, possibly left there by Skar King. The inside of the temple has a stairway leading down to a throne room, with glowing blue pillars and various archways. On the floor surrounding the throne, there are multiple axes created from the spines of Godzilla's species.
In Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted, the Spineprowler's profile mentions it being encountered in the Hollow Earth's "Epicentral Forest regions"; the Titan Hunter mech finds two cubs in a forest.
In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it is shown the Hollow Earths main source of light comes from giant green crystals scattered about the terrain.[3] After having lived in the Hollow Earth for 3 years, Kong has made a home for himself in a cave located above a cliff. After Kong jumps down a pit that opened up where he hunted Wart Dogs earlier, he lands in a cavern filled with the bones of Great Apes and giant blue crystals that glowed when Kong brought his axe close to them. After exiting through a waterfall, Kong arrives in a subterranean level of the main Hollow Earth, which contains a barren terrain, aside from some rock formations and heavy amounts of fog. While following Suko after their scuffle earlier, Kong and Suko arrive in a mountainous area of the subterranean level that contains foliage as large as Titans, and large lakes that monsters such as the Drownviper can inhabit. After feeding on the giant eel, Suko leads Kong to a volcanic biome that has river of lava, and skeletons of monsters that dwarf Kong, with one of the skeletons even being a bridge. After Suko leads Kong through a cave containing lava rivers, and both blue and green crystals, they arrive in the Skar Kings lair, a giant pocket that has a pit that has lava river pouring into it, including one giant river that is used as Shimo's chamber, and another cave that houses a throne that Skar King uses to survey the other Great Apes. The Hollow Earth Iwi civilization lives in a corner of the aboveground Hollow Earth that live inside giant crystal pyramids that are surrounded by many Vile Vortexes, or Gravity Tunnels.

Monsterverse
Kong: Skull Island
Bill Randa recruited Houston Brooks into Monarch after reading a paper he wrote in support of the maligned Hollow Earth hypothesis: the existence of "massive underground spaces isolated from the surface world." Randa theorized that one such space existed beneath Skull Island, and that this lost world was the home of countless monsters. During Monarch's expedition to the island, seismic charges dropped by the Sky Devils helicopter squadron on Skull Island showed that the bedrock was nearly hollow. After Kong attacked the helicopters, they learned from Hank Marlow that the charges had disturbed the massive, subterranean Skullcrawlers. Nonetheless, Brooks's theory remained unverified, and gradually fell out of favor at Monarch.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
As Monarch raced to Antarctica to stop Alan Jonah from awakening King Ghidorah, Godzilla fell off their sensors. Dr. Rick Stanton theorized that he was using underwater tunnels in the Hollow Earth to swiftly travel. After the U.S. military used the Oxygen Destroyer to end a battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah near Isla de Mara, Godzilla retreated to an ancient underwater temple in the Hollow Earth to recover. Monarch tracked him there via submarine with the help of Mothra, and Dr. Ishiro Serizawa sacrificed himself to detonate a nuclear weapon, revitalizing the Titan. After Godzilla killed Ghidorah, Monarch made plans to explore the Hollow Earth, hoping to discover the origin of the Titans.
Godzilla vs. Kong
Prior to 2024, Monarch attempted an expedition into the Hollow Earth led by Corporal David Lind. However, the sudden gravitational inversion experienced upon entering the Hollow Earth, equivalent to "a whole planet’s worth of gravity", proved fatal and killed David along with the rest of the expedition. David's brother, Monarch geologist Nathan Lind, published a book about the Hollow Earth to poor reviews and sales. Lind eventually left Monarch for Denham University of Theoretical Science, where he was approached by Apex Cybernetics CEO Walter Simmons and Chief Technology Officer Ren Serizawa. They reported that recent scans of the planet showed a tremendous energy source within the Hollow Earth. If they could harness this energy, Simmons said, they could create a weapon capable of competing with Godzilla. Lind dismissed the notion of Hollow Earth travel, but Simmons introduced a new invention: the Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicle (HEAV). This vehicle could withstand the gravitational inversion and allow exploration of the Hollow Earth. Convinced, Lind proposed that a Titan would be able to lead them to the energy source, due to the genetic memory shared by all Titans. Lind approached Dr. Ilene Andrews at the Skull Island outpost and proposed a mission to the Hollow Earth with Kong. Though Andrews was against the idea at first, she eventually agreed on the condition that she was in charge of Kong.
En route to the entrance point in Antarctica, the fleet transporting Kong was attacked by Godzilla, who nearly killed the colossal ape before the rest of the fleet shut off its power and convinced him to leave. Kong was airlifted the rest of the way, and finally deposited near the entrance point in Antarctica. Jia, the orphaned Iwi girl with whom Kong communicated, tried to convince him to enter the Hollow Earth, but he hesitated. Only after Jia mentioned the possibility of his family being down there did Kong make his way into it. Monarch and Apex pursued Kong inside the HEAVs, and followed him through a vortex that released them into the Hollow Earth. They followed Kong across the terrain before one HEAV was destroyed by a Warbat. Another Warbat flew toward another HEAV before Kong caught it by the tail and fatally slammed it on the ground. The other Warbat constricted its body around Kong, but a HEAV forced it to release him by firing missiles at it. Kong promptly overpowered and killed the Warbat. Kong continued traversing the terrain until he came to a cliff, then leaped across to another peak. Kong came upon a huge temple-like structure, which bore the handprint of his species on the door. Kong placed his hand over it and pushed the door open, leading into a massive chamber. Kong roared into the chamber, but his roar echoed unanswered. Kong found a giant axe lodged into the skull of a fallen Titan. He then sat on a massive throne, after which the expedition members disembarked from their HEAVs. When the blade of Kong's axe began to glow blue, he placed it into an indentation on the ground which caused the glow to spread: they had found the energy source. Apex released a drone to harvest the energy, much to Monarch's displeasure. Apex's Maia Simmons had the Monarch members held at gunpoint while the drone harvested the energy and uploaded the data to Apex headquarters in Hong Kong.
The chamber suddenly began to shake, causing the Hellhawks roosting on the ceiling to flock down and attack. Maia and the Apex guards escaped in a HEAV, while Lind, Andrews, and Jia were cornered by a Hellhawk. Godzilla's atomic breath then burst through the ground, blasting the Hellhawk aside and allowing the three to reach the HEAV. Kong approached the breach in the ground, but was fired upon by Maia's HEAV. He caught the HEAV in his hand and proceeded to crush and destroy it. Godzilla roared through the tunnel he had opened with his atomic breath, and Kong answered on the other side. He grabbed his axe once again and jumped into the opening, climbing his way to Hong Kong to face Godzilla once more.
After Godzilla and Kong had defeated Mechagodzilla, Kong was returned to the Hollow Earth to live in peace. Lind, Andrews, and Jia watched Kong from a monitoring station as he passed by on his morning walk. Kong signed the word "home" to Jia before swinging himself onto a cliff, where he beat his chest and roared triumphantly.

After the defeat of Mechagodzilla, Kong spent the next three years exploring his new home inside the Hollow Earth. He and Godzilla had a truce of sorts in order, where Godzilla would stay on the surface, and Kong inside the Hollow Earth. Kong is chased by a pack of ravenous Wart Dogs, who he manages to ward off, killing a few in the process. As he prepares to eat one of the Wart Dogs that he killed, Doug stole one of the dead Wart Dogs for himself. Kong soon after hears a roar resembling his own, which he proceeds to follow in search of. To his disappointment, the roar turns out to have come from a Parrot Frog who merely imitated Kong's own roar.
Not long after, Monarch Outpost 1 inside the Hollow Earth picks up a strange signal coming from deeper inside the Hollow Earth. Monarch researchers on the surface are unsure what to make of the signal, but Jia keeps having visions of future events and scribbling a shape extremely similar to the signal's frequency. While Monarch researcher Ilene Andrews attempted to find out why Jia was having these visions, Monarch Outpost 1 fell under attack by Skar King, who peered into a security camera outside the base.
The next day, Ilene sought out the assistance of Bernie Hayes, who she had met three years after Mechagodzilla was destroyed. With some effort, Ilene managed to convince Bernie to help her in her search for answers. Later that day, Kong suddenly emerged from a Hollow Earth portal located in Barbados, clearly in distress. Upon noticing Kong's infected tooth, Trapper Beasley was called in to remove the tooth. Later on, Bernie approached Ilene with his discoveries with the signal. As it turns out, this signal had been detected on multiple different occasions. The signal was picked up upon the discovery of Skull Island, King Ghidorah's re-awakening, and humanity's first encounter with Godzilla in modern times. Furthermore, Bernie concludes that Godzilla has also been aware of this signal, and that it is a distress call. With this in mind, Bernie, Trapper and Ilene coordinate an expedition into the Hollow Earth to discover the source of the signal. Ilene also mentions that the United States Government has been attempting to take over operations within the Hollow Earth, further emphasizing the urgency of said expedition. With further assistance from Mikael, the team follows Kong into the Hollow Earth.
Once inside the Hollow Earth, a flock of Vertacines soon gravitate towards the HEAV the team is inside. Trapper uses the vehicle's Bio-Mimicry Camouflage to blend in with the flock, ensuring their safety from predators. Soon thereafter, the expedition team loses contact with the surface world, before noticing a large plume of smoke off in the distance. Upon further investigation, they discover the ruins of Monarch Outpost 1. Trapper manages to find a camera before the team spots a massive red handprint off in the distance. Ilene confirms the handprint doesn't belong to Kong before they return to the HEAV and take off.
Meanwhile, Kong is exploring when he stumbles across a glowing blue crevasse. Grabbing his axe, he illuminates the cavern, discovering the bones of fellow apes. After further inspecting, Kong finds the cavern's exit, leading him to discover an unexplored area of the Hollow Earth. Kong explores his new surroundings when a shadowy figure approaches him. Brandishing his Kong's battle axe, he readies himself, only for the threat to reveal itself as young Suko. Kong lowers his guard and begins to approach the young ape, until it abruptly bites his finger and runs off. Kong desperately chases Suko until a second ape drops down behind him. Kong is surprised to see another of his kind as the second ape bears a wicked grin. Two other apes then tackle Kong to the ground, as the previous ape prepares to bludgeon him with a bone club. Kong escapes the grasp of the apes and manages to fight the three of them off when Suko suddenly lunges at him. Kong grabs Suko by the foot and uses him as a blunt weapon to hit the other apes with. As Kong continues to subdue the attacking apes, one of them nearly plummets off a cliff when Kong rescues him. The ape then wields a knife and returns to trying to attack Kong, which leads him to kick the ape off the cliff. One of the remaining apes gets up and begins to run off, to which Kong responds by throwing a rock, which hits the ape in the head as it runs off. Kong then finds Suko hiding amongst some trees, and confronts him. He holds up a knife one of the larger apes was wielding, and asks Suko to show him where said apes came from. Suko is unwilling at first, but Kong relents and Suko agrees to lead the way.
Back at the HEAV, Trapper manages to recover the data from the broken camera he found, leading to them discovering the footage of Skar King staring at the camera. Before they can discuss it, they come across a large ravine and land inside it. While the team bickers amongst itself, Mikael shouts at them which causes him to be eaten by a tree mimic, sending the others into panic. After escaping the creature, they stumble upon an overgrown Iwi temple. At the center of the temple, they find a mural of Mothra, which leads them to discover an Iwi village protected by an organic wall.
Elsewhere, Kong continues following Suko as Warbats fly overhead. The two of them scare away a flock of Hellhawks as Suko leads Kong to a massive lake. Suko compels Kong to step into the lake, the two of them cleaning themselves and drinking as they attract the attention of a Drownviper. The Drownviper ambushes Kong as Suko flees the area. As Suko is running, Kong's axe abruptly falls into the ground, with Kong right behind it. Kong takes Suko to higher ground as he eats a piece of the fallen Drownviper. Kong notices Suko picking at himself for food, which compels him to hand Suko a piece of the Drownviper. Suko is initially hesitant, but Kong tosses the piece to him, causing Suko to ease up and sit next to Kong.
Trapper, Bernie, Ilene and Jia continue to explore past the organic wall when they're suddenly ambushed by a group of Iwi warriors. The group is held at knifepoint until one of the warriors recognizes Jia is of Iwi descent. The group is lead into the village where Bernie on large quartz pyramids which they use as a power source. Jia informs Ilene of the Iwi's telepathic abilities as the group spots multiple portals to the surface above them. An Iwi priestess emerges from the base of the pyramids, bringing Jia forth. She holds Jia's hands, viewing her memories, before commanding the warriors to lower their weapons. The priestess leads the group into the pyramid, where a large pink crystal hangs above them. The priestess reveals to Jia and Ilene that the signal they were searching for was being created by this exact crystal, that the signal was the Iwi calling for help.
Kong and Suko walk atop a gargantuan skeleton bridge as they head into a rocky area of the Hollow Earth with lava flowing around them, as Ilene reads Iwi cave illustrations. She explains that thousands of years ago, humans lived in harmony with the titans that protected nature, and the apes that protected mankind. Eventually, Skar King came forth and ruled with cruelty and tyranny, hellbent on controlling the surface world. His goals and actions caused him to come into conflict with Godzilla, who did battle against them on many occasions. Skar King and his troop nearly defeated Godzilla, but after a fierce battle they were banished into the depths of the Hollow Earth by Godzilla. Even so, Skar King continued to make plans to one day return to the surface.
Suko leads Kong further onward, pointing him towards a massive group of apes doing hard labor, leaving Kong shocked. As the two of them walk past various different apes, one of them drops a rock they're moving and is punched by a larger ape guard. The ape guard further kicks the worker ape down, angering Kong. Suko tries to force Kong back, but he relents. Kong helps up the worker ape, attracting the ire of the guard ape who grunts and roars in his face. Kong responds by punching him square in the face, knocking him out cold. Kong asserts his dominance, further worrying Suko. Above it all, other ape guards alert the Skar King, who gets up from his throne. He roars as he steps forward, filling Suko with terror. Skar King leaps down from the cliff and approaches Kong, standing before him. Skar King spots Kong's metal filling which he mocks to the amusement of the other guard apes. Suko fakes a laugh as well, which attracts the Skar King's attention. Skar King approaches Suko and roars at him when another ape steps in front of Suko to protect him. Skar King seemingly moves on, only to kick the ape in the lava, greatly distressing Suko. Kong roars with fury, and Skar King responds. The other apes clear out as Skar King lashes Kong with his whip. As the battle continues, Skar King manages to steal Kong's axe out of his hand and wraps his whip around Kong's neck to suffocate him. Kong regains his strength, and knocks Skar King off of him. Skar King's ape guards step forward, but he dismisses them. Behind Kong, a lava waterfall makes way for a giant white titan, Shimo. Wearing a collar of chains, Shimo roars at the apes until Skar King uses the crystal at the tip of his whip, controlling her to attack Kong. Kong attempts to block her beam of ice with his axe, but frost consumes his arm, causing him to drop the axe. Injured, Kong flees Skar King's domain. Skar King sends his guards to chase him, as he holds up Kong's axe as a prize.
Kong flees as Skar King's guard chases him. Kong uses various traps he created to subdue some of them, but the remaining apes continued their pursuit. Eventually, Kong is cornered in a ravine, and he's outsmarted when the guard apes outsmart his trap. Luckily, Suko triggers the trap, saving Kong from them. Suko helps Kong to walk, and leads him to the Iwi village, where Bernie explains how the Iwi use the manipulation of gravity to build structures. Not long after, Kong arrives with Suko in tow. Exhausted, Kong falls to the ground, as a surviving member of Skar King's guard spots the Hollow Earth portals within the Iwi village. He hurriedly returns and informs Skar King of this development, which catches his attention. Grabbing Kong's axe and standing atop Shimo, Skar King and his army set out to attack the Iwi village.
As Kong lay wounded, Trapper comes up with a plan to save him. Travelling back to the ruined Monarch Outpost 1, he collects the inactive B.E.A.S.T. Glove which flies back to the Iwi village, onto Kong's arm. As Kong gets up, Suko warns him of the approaching Skar King. Kong decides he needs to return to the surface to get help. In the Iwi village, Jia climbs one of the giant pyramids to summon Mothra, who flies off to Cairo to subdue Godzilla and Kong. Once the battle in Egypt is over, the Iwi activate the two pyramids, causing the gravity in the village to decrease for two minutes. Skar King and Shimo break through the organic wall not long after, with Shimo using her frost breath to delay the pyramids from making contact. Just then, Trapper flies in with a flock of Vertacines, who disorient Skar King and Shimo. Shimo kills the Vertacines shortly thereafter, when Godzilla and Kong enter the Hollow Earth. The four monsters do battle when the pyramids connect, weakening the gravity. Mothra and Suko assist by dealing with Skar King's apes as the fight continues, only for the gravity to be restored. The four monsters enter a Hollow Earth portal, getting sent to Rio de Janeiro while Mothra and Suko stay behind. As the battle continues, Kong and Skar King fight over the crystal that controls Shimo, when Suko grabs Kong's axe and jumps into the portal. He uses the axe to smash the crystal, freeing Shimo from Skar King's control. Now free, Shimo fires her ice beam at Skar King, freezing him solid. Kong then smashes Skar King into the ground, shattering him. As Mothra repairs the organic wall around the Iwi village and flies off, Kong roars with Suko and Shimo in victory. The no-longer enslaved apes watch on, free from the tyranny of the Skar King.

Godzilla Dominion
When Godzilla returned to the site of his former lair within the Hollow Earth, he was attacked by a swarm of hostile, fish-like creatures. He recognized the creatures as coming from the "deep hollows" after Serizawa's nuclear weapon opened a passage deeper into the Hollow Earth. Godzilla killed the creatures' genitor (leader) and ensured its swarm would never return, then continued searching the world for a new lair. He eventually came upon one of his old lairs within the Hollow Earth, from which he had been driven by a "rival" long ago. He was immediately attacked by the serpentine Tiamat upon reaching it, but managed to make her retreat by bringing the battle onto solid ground. Godzilla walked through his lair, passing by ancient statues and carvings of himself and other members of the Titanus Gojira race. Godzilla recognized that there was once another rival here besides Tiamat, only to see the skull of a deceased member of the Titanus Kong species. Godzilla then decided to call the other Titans back to their ancient rest before he could finally rest himself.
Kingdom Kong
Camazotz, the "King of the Deep," was roused from his slumber within the Hollow Earth in 2019 by King Ghidorah, attacking San Diego along with his hell swarm. The bat-like Titan later returned to the Hollow Earth under Skull Island, where Monarch under the direction of Houston Brooks was attempting to organize an expedition through the vile vortex and into the Hollow Earth. In the meantime, a storm generated by Ghidorah had made its way to the island and combined with the perpetual storm cell surrounding the island, plunging it into darkness. Brooks realized too late that this was part of an Iwi prophecy which warned that once Skull Island was shrouded in darkness, Camazotz would come to claim his new kingdom. Camazotz burst from underground near where Monarch was drilling into the Hollow Earth and immediately set his sights on Kong. A team of fighter pilots flew into battle to assist Kong against Camazotz and his hell swarm. While Kong seemed outmatched, one of the pilots managed to disorient Camazotz by performing a sonic boom in front of his face. Kong took the opportunity to pummel his foe, then punched him back into the Hollow Earth from whence he came.
