The Houtua (フツア,   Futsua) are a humanoid race that first appeared in the 2017 Godzilla film, GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters. They inhabit Earth 20,000 years into the future, where its entire ecosystem is dominated by Godzilla Earth. They are descended from the humans that were left behind on Earth in 2048 when 15,000 humans fled the planet aboard the Oratio and Aratrum.[1][2]

Name

The Houtua's original planned name was Infant (インファント,   Infanto), a reference to Mothra and her tribal worshipers' home of Infant Island in most media.[3]

Design

The Houtua superficially resemble normal humans, with brown skin covered in ornate white markings. They possess antennae on their heads extending from their hair, likely a result of the insect DNA they possess. The Houtua tend to be smaller in stature than humans, but are typically more muscular and possess broad shoulders.[3] The Houtua also all wear tribal clothing. The female Houtua twins Miana and Maina possess light blue hair, while the male Houtua tribal elder Munak possesses whitish hair and a full beard.

Culture

The Houtua are a tribal people, led by the elder Munak. They live together in a volcanic caldera, sheltered from external threats such as the Godzilla-spawned flora and fauna. The Houtua worship the last surviving egg left behind by their goddess Mothra, and keep it in a temple located within the caldera. The twin priestesses Maina and Miana tend to the egg and can telepathically communicate its messages to the rest of their people. The Houtua are a mostly peaceful race, keeping to themselves and coexisting with the hostile ecosystem ruled over by Godzilla. Though they regard Godzilla as Mothra's enemy, they do not hate him but rather accept him as a part of nature. Unlike humans or the other humanoid races, they do not seek to fight Godzilla or get revenge on him, as their only goal is survival. While peaceful, the Houtua are willing and capable of defending themselves against threats. They possess the technical skill to harvest Nanometal from Mechagodzilla City and fashion it into tools and weapons capable of slaying any Servum that threaten them. The Houtua are initially distrustful of the United Earth races when they enter their territory while trying to fight Godzilla, and capture several of them and bring them to their village. However, the Houtua do not harm the prisoners and actually treat the wounded, and release the prisoners along with their possessions once they determine they are not a threat. While Mulu-elu Galu-gu regards the Houtua as savages and little more than insects, Martin Lazzari notes that they are surprisingly advanced as a civilization and are potentially equals to humanity. The Houtua all communicate with each other telepathically, and have the capacity to communicate in this manner with other races, translating their messages into the tongue of the recipients. They are also capable of learning the languages of other races and speaking them. Following Ghidorah's banishment, the Houtua accepted the surviving humans into their society and even reproduced with them.

Origins

The Houtua species is composed of remnants of the human race, following its near-extinction at the hands of Godzilla and the planet's various other kaiju nearly 20,000 years ago. After the departure of the Aratrum and Oratio in 2048, Mothra defended many of the humans left behind on the planet from Godzilla. These humans traveled to Japan along with Mothra's eggs, where they would follow the example of Mothra's People and live in symbiosis with her offspring, ensuring their survival in a planet dominated by Godzilla. The Houtua have adapted to their surroundings by taking in the genes of insects, and live underground in a 100 meter-deep volcanic cave formed by Mothra in the vicinity of what was once Oyama.[1][4][3]

History

Reiwa era

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

Miana, a member of the Houtua, rescued Haruo Sakaki and brought him to her hut after the United Earth forces were demolished by Godzilla Earth.

GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle

The Surviving United Earth Forces stay shelter with the Houtua after Godzilla Earth emerged. The Bilasaludo realize the Houtua use Nanometal to create the heads of their arrows. After convincing the two Twins, Miana and Maina, to take them to the source of the nanometal, the twins lead them to MechaGodzilla City. They Houtua are also seen observing the battle in MechaGodzilla City.

Abilities

Telepathy

The Houtua possess some telepathic capabilities, and are able to converse with one another telepathically. They can also telepathically communicate with humans, with their thoughts automatically being received in the humans' native language. They are also able to learn human speech relatively quickly and converse in this way. The twin Houtua priestesses, Maina and Miana, are also said to be able to hear voices from the eggs left by their god, a trait considered unique to their family.[1][3]

Scales

As a result of their insect genes, the Houtua's bodies naturally secrete scales that counteract the effects of both Godzilla cells and Nanometal. This allows them to live in close proximity to both substances without being poisoned, mutated, or assimilated by either substance like most other life around them, and to survive in the planet's toxic atmosphere without airtight suits or helmets. The Houtua are also able to directly touch Nanometal and fashion it into tools or weapons capable of combating predators like the Servum.[3]

Physical abilities

Despite their comparatively small stature, the Houtua are muscular and possess motor function superior to their human ancestors.[3]

Trivia

  • While the Houtua's connection to Mothra is never addressed in GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle, it is hinted at through the Houtua's antennae and secretion of defensive scales, as well as the egg of their tribal god. The two twin priestesses who guard the egg, Miana and Maina, are based on the Shobijin, Mothra's miniature twin priestesses from the majority of her film appearances.[3] Additionally, the prequel novel GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla explains how the Houtua came to be, detailing Mothra revealing herself to the remnants of humanity and the transportation of her eggs to Japan to defend future generations.[4]
