Japan (日本,   Nihon) is a country in the far east of Asia. An archipelago made up of over 6,500 islands, Japan's capital city is Tokyo. As a result of Japan being the 'home country' for Toho and countless other film studios, it is the birthplace of the kaiju genre of movies and popular kaiju such as Godzilla and Gamera. It is also home to tokusatsu heroes such as Ultraman.

Heisei era Godzilla

The Return of Godzilla

A second Godzilla emerges. The 80-meter monster raids Tokyo, and the JSDF launches the Super X, an aerial battle mech, to fight the monster, but it is destroyed. Godzilla is then lured to the rim of the volcanic Mt. Mihara, where an eruption is triggered that seals the creature within the volcano.

Godzilla vs. Biollante

Godzilla is released from his imprisonment inside the crater of Mount Mihara by terrorists working for Bio-Major. A creature created from the combination of the DNA of Godzilla, a rose, and a scientist's deceased daughter, dubbed Biollante, attracts the King of the Monsters toward Lake Ashi. Godzilla defeats Biollante at Lake Ashi before assaulting Osaka, where he destroys the JSDF's Super X2 but is successfully injected with the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria. Godzilla engages Biollante again in a final confrontation at Wakasa Bay, where he is weakened by the effects of the ANEB and stumbles into the sea, with both monsters going their separate ways.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

Visitors from the 23rd century (the year 2204), dubbed the Futurians, arrive in Japan to deliver a warning: very soon, Godzilla will recover from his ANEB infection and return to Japan, and will completely destroy the country. The Futurians propose a radical plan: travel back in time to the year 1944 and teleport a dinosaur (dubbed the Godzillasaurus) from Lagos Island, a small island that would, ten years later, be hit with the radioactivity from the Castle Bravo H-bomb test which would mutate the dinosaur into Godzilla. The time travelers have an ulterior motive, and release three genetically engineered animals called Dorats. Ten years later, the H-bomb is tested, mutating the Dorats and fusing them into one monster: King Ghidorah.

However, the Futurians' actions had not actually erased Godzilla from history, but led to his creation in the first place, as the Godzillasaurus was mutated by a nuclear submarine crash in the Bering Sea. The Japanese government, mistakenly believing that the un-mutated Godzillasaurus is still dormant, sends a nuclear submarine in the hope of recreating Godzilla. Godzilla destroys the submarine and absorbs its energy, burning off his ANEB infection and growing him from 80 to 100 meters in height. He now emerges from the sea and makes his way towards King Ghidorah. The two monsters fight, and Godzilla blows off King Ghidorah's middle head and blasts holes in his wings, causing him to fall into the sea. To stop Godzilla's rampage across Japan, Emmy Kano, a rebel Futurian, proposes returning to 2204 and reviving King Ghidorah as a weapon to be used to fight Godzilla. She returns to 1992 as the pilot of the cyborg Mecha-King Ghidorah and engages Godzilla in Tokyo, finally lifting the King of the Monsters out of the city. Unfortunately, one final blast from Godzilla's atomic breath destroys Mecha-King Ghidorah and both monsters fall into the sea.

Godzilla vs. Mothra

A meteorite strikes the Earth, landing in the Ogasawara Trench and awakening Godzilla. The meteorite begins to set into motion a series of natural disasters around the planet, including typhoons, earthquakes, rising water levels, and landslides. Battra and Mothra team up to fight Godzilla and defeat him, but only after Battra dies.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Two years after the wreckage of Mecha-King Ghidorah is recovered, the U.N.G.C.C complete work on Mechagodzilla, a giant robot built to fight the King of the Monsters. An egg recovered from Adonoa Island in the Berring Sea hatches into a Baby Godzilla. Godzilla, attracted by his newborn kin, soon arrives in Japan, and Mechagodzilla is launched to fight it. The two fight, but Mechagodzilla is soon defeated and and Godzilla continues on his way. The Baby is used as a decoy for Godzilla, but Rodan, now more powerful after transforming into Fire Rodan, steals the canister holding the Baby. Mechagodzilla and Rodan battle, with the latter being brutally injured, before Godzilla finally arrives. After battling for some time, Mechagodzilla finally fires the G-Crusher into Godzilla and destroys his sacral brain, causing him to fall and die. Rodan then flies over to the fallen dinosaur and transfers his life energy into him, allowing Godzilla to rise and finally defeat Mechagodzilla. Godzilla then finally locates the Baby Godzilla, whom he adopts as his own and the two then swim out to sea.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

The U.N.G.C.C. devises two alternate plans to defeat Godzilla: Project M, which involves the conversion of the wreckage of Mechagodzilla into a new anti-Godzilla mech dubbed MOGUERA (Mobile Operation Godzilla Universal Expert Robot Aero-Type), and Project T, which involves the controlling of Godzilla telepathically. At the same time, however, the Cosmos return to Earth to warn humanity that a space monster is on it's way. It seems that Godzilla's cells were carried into space either as a part of Biollante, or on Mothra, and those cells mutated into a monster dubbed SpaceGodzilla. After capturing BabyGodzilla, he flies to Fukuoka and erects a crystal fortress there. MOGUERA is sent to the city to engage SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla soon arrives to do battle with his intergalactic clone as well. After a long battle, during which MOGUERA is destroyed, Godzilla finally kills SpaceGodzilla once and for all.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

In order to lure Godzilla to Japan to fight Destoroyah his adopted son, Godzilla Junior, is used as bait. In Tokyo, Junior engages Destoroyah in battle, and successfully drives him back. Godzilla soon arrives, just in time to see Destoroyah evolve into his final form and lift Junior into the sky. The demon then drops the young monster from an extreme altitude, and watches as the creature hits the ground and apparently dies from the impact. Furious, Godzilla attacks Destoroyah with all he has, his temperature rising every second. Destoroyah eventually turns and retreats, but the JSDF shoots the creature down with low temperature lasers. Godzilla's temperature rises to 1200 degrees Celsius, and the beast melts down. Within seconds, the King of the Monsters is gone, and Tokyo is left in irradiated ruins. Suddenly, however, the radioactivity decreases and soon disapears. From out of the smoke and mist appears Junior, who has survived, absorbed the excess radiation, and inherited his father's crown as the new King of the Monsters.

Rebirth of Mothra

Desghidorah, an ancient creature that destroyed an ancient civilization millions of years earlier, is awoken by the evil Elias, Belvera. Her two sisters, Moll and Lora, call on the last remaining Mothra to fight the three-headed space monster. As she begins to loose the fight, her larval offspring hatches prematurely to assist her, and arives to fight Desghidorah. Although the tiny creature's mother is killed in the battle, the small larva, known as Leo, metamorphoses into it's imago form and defeats the demonic hydra once and for all.

Rebirth of Mothra 2

An ancient pollution eating monster named Dagahra emerges. Mothra Leo arives to do battle with the sea monster, but is defeated in the first conflict. Thankfully, Leo is empowered by an ancient treasure and transforms into Rainbow Mothra. In his new form, Leo transforms into Aqua Mothra and defeats Dagahra once and for all.

Rebirth of Mothra 3

When the dreaded King Ghidorah returns to Earth and begins abducting children in order to feed on their life forces, Rainbow Mothra and the Elias attempt to stop him but are hopelessly outmatched. Moll sacrifices herself to send Mothra back in time to the Cretaceous Period, when King Ghidorah was considerably weaker and nearly drove the dinosaurs to extinction, in a desperate attempt to stop him.

Leo succeeds in destroying Cretaceous King Ghidorah (save for a severed tail which digs itself into the ground), but is gravely injured. However, after three Primitive Mothra larvae encase him in a silk cocoon, Leo survives through the ages and emerges from his cocoon in 1998 in his most powerful form: Armor Mothra. In this new form, Leo fights and defeats King Ghidorah, who had completely regenerated from the severed tail. Leo then sheds his armor, becoming Eternal Mothra, and flies off into the sunset with the Elias.

Godzilla 2000: Millennium

A giant space rock is discovered on the bottom of the sea, and is lifted to the surface. The rock is actually a giant spacecraft which contains an alien creature that has, over millions of years, lost its physical body. The creature steals genetic information from Godzilla and mutates into Orga, a monster with the same regenerative capabilities of the Monster King himself. After an epic battle, Godzilla succeeds in destroying Orga once and for all.

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus

Scientists in Japan invent a black hole gun dubbed the Dimension Tide to finally destroy Godzilla. The device opens up a worm hole that allows a prehistoric race of insects called the Meganulon to enter the future. The Meganulon metamorphose into giant dragonflies called Meganula, which siphon energy from Godzilla. They then inject the energy into the Meganula queen, giving rise to the monster Megaguirus. After an epic bout, Godzilla kills his opponent. The Dimension Tide is fired one last time before exploding upon reentry, and Godzilla is seemingly defeated. However, the creature reemerges a few weeks later, completely unharmed.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

47 years after its first attack, Godzilla returns and attacks Japan. However, the demonic monster is forced to contend with the three Guardian Monsters of Yamato: Baragon, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. After dispatching all three of the Guardian Monsters, Godzilla is eventually destroyed when his Atomic Ray fails to discharge and blows up the monster's body. Unfortunately, the creature's heart survives and continues to beat, foreshadowing its possible return

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

After four years of hard work, "Mechagodzilla," nicknamed Kiryu, is created with the bones and DNA of Godzilla, is finally completed. The 60 meter tall robot is armed with a powerful Absolute Zero Cannon capable of firing a ray that freezes any target to 0 degrees Kelvin. Just around the time the robot is completed, Godzilla returns and lands in Japan. Kiryu is deployed to fight the creature off, but Godzilla roars, awakening the spirit of the original Godzilla within the machine. As Godzilla escapes, Kiryu goes berserk and attacks the city itself, just as the soul inside had done 49 years earlier. When Godzilla attacks again several weeks later, it is only with extreme reluctance that Japan's Prime Minister deploys Kiryu again. The two monsters duke it out in Tokyo, and Kiryu finally succeeds in grabbing Godzilla and flying him out to sea. Just as the two hit the water, Kiryu fires Absolute Zero. While the water around is frozen solid, Godzilla surfaces still alive, but not without a large wound in it's chest. As Godzilla swims out to sea, Kiryu also surfaces, but is in bad shape, having lost it's Absolute Zero Cannon and one of it's arms.

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS

One year after the battle between Godzilla and Kiryu, the machine is still undergoing extensive repairs. Godzilla has not been seen, but the signs of the beast's return are mounting: the lifeless body of a monster turtle dubbed Kamoebas washes up on the coast of Japan with deep wounds in it's neck. The monster Mothra also reemerges, and her twin fairies, relatives of the Shobijin discovered on Infant Island in 1961, warn mankind that the bones of Godzilla contained within Kiryu must return to the sea, for no man may touch the souls of the dead. However, Kiryu is prepared for battle anyway, but Godzilla raids before the final checkup is complete. However, the grandson of Dr. Chujo, the man who had helped to save the Shobijin 43 years earlier, summons Mothra to the city, and the guardian monster engages Godzilla in battle. Far away on a pacific island, the egg of Mothra hatches and two larvae emerge and begin to swim to Tokyo to help their mother. Back in the city, Kiryu is finally launched and once again engages Godzilla. The larvae soon arrive as well, just in time to see their mother die at the hands of Godzilla, and then attack their mother's murderer. Soon, Kiryu gets close enough to Godzilla to stab the beast in the wound opened by the Absolute Zero Cannon the year before. The larvae then cover Godzilla in silk, but not before Godzilla lets out one last roar. Kiryu once again reverts to its "Godzilla-side", and, operating on its own, lifts Godzilla out to sea and sinks itself with its organic counterpart in the Japan Trench. The Mothra larvae leave Tokyo, and the human race is left safe.

Monsterverse

Godzilla (2014)

In 1999, after the discovery of the two MUTO 'spores', the hatched male MUTO burrowed to Janjira, the nearest source of radiation. When the MUTO started causing seismic anomalies underneath the city of Janjira, Joe and Sandra Brody were at work in the plant. Thinking it was a regular earthquake, the staff at the Nuclear Power Plant began to switch off the systems to prevent damage. The MUTO suddenly began to feed, causing the reactors to rupture, spewing out their radiation-contaminated water. This resulted in the deaths of Sandra Brody and her team, trapped in the reactor. The plant then collapsed under the strain of the MUTO feeding, causing more casualties. The MUTO then cocooned to continue feeding on the radiation which was released, as Monarch took the plant and the city of Janjira under quarantine.

In 2014, Joe and Ford Brody managed to bypass the quarantine zone's security and found much of the city slowly returning to nature. There, Joe managed to recover floppy disks on the reactor collapse and found that strangely, the radiation levels in the city were at normal, background levels (later found out to be due to the MUTO's feeding). The two were then captured by Monarch security and taken to the Janjira power plant, where Joe was interrogated. The MUTO then abruptly hatched from his cocoon, and mortally wounded Joe. It also killed hundreds of Monarch workers as it fought its way out of its containment. The MUTO escaped the plant soon after.

Shin Godzilla

A giant mixotrophic creature codenamed "Godzilla" appears and terrorizes Japan, destroying several wards of Tokyo after it becomes enraged following the JSDF's attempts to kill it. With seemingly no other options left, other countries prepare a nuclear strike on Japan in an attempt to destroy the creature before it can take over the world. However, before the bomb is dropped, the city is evacuated and Operation Yashiori is concocted to try to spare Tokyo. The operation proves successful and the atomic bombing of Tokyo is postponed.

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

After the Central Committee of the Aratrum approves a return to mission to Earth, the ship's passengers discover that 20,000 years have passed on the planet and that a new ecosystem has sprung up around Godzilla. A landing brigade headed by Colonel Eliott Leland is deployed to the former Tanzawa Forest area to carry out Haruo Sakaki's anti-Godzilla plan. They are attacked by a swarm of Servum, winged creatures which inhabit the new Godzilla-dominated ecosystem, and encounter Godzilla Filius, a subspecies of the original Godzilla that divided from his cells. Mistaken for the original, it is killed it by its body being overloaded with electromagnetic energy until it explodes. However, the original Godzilla appears, now grown to 300 meters in height, and swiftly eliminates most of the United Earth's forces. Haruo is rescued by a mysterious tribal woman named Miana.

GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle

Haruo reunites with other survivors and is brought to the underground village of Miana's people, the Houtua, who have seemingly descended from the humans left behind on Earth 20,000 years ago. The Bilusaludo Mulu-elu Galu-gu and Rilu-elu Belu-be discover that the Houtua use Nanometal, the same metal used to construct Mechagodzilla 20,000 years ago, as a material in the construction of weapons. Miana and her twin sister Maina guide the remaining United Earth troops to the former site of Mechagodzilla's development plant at the foot of Mount Fuji, which is now the site of a vast city formed from Mechagodzilla's surviving Nanometal. Plans are put underway to lure Godzilla to Mechagodzilla City and execute him with the City's specialized weaponry. When Godzilla locates the City, he is held off by Vultures before being lured to a capture point where he is trapped by liquid Nanometal. In a scaled-up version of Haruo's previous plan, Godzilla's dorsal plates are destroyed and EMP Harpoons are injected into his body. Rather than exploding from the excess electromagnetic energy like Godzilla Filius, Godzilla converts the energy into heat. Galu-gu attempts to forcibly merge Haruo and everyone else with the Nanometal in order to let them withstand the heat long enough to destroy Godzilla, leading Haruo to the realization that Mechagodzilla City's Nanometal will assimilate the entire planet once Godzilla is destroyed. Haruo kills Galu-gu and allows Godzilla to free himself and obliterate Mechagodzilla City, although his comrade Yuko Tani is rendered brain-dead from the failed Nanometal assimilation.

GODZILLA: The Planet Eater

With the remaining Bilusaludo aboard the Aratrum calling for Haruo's head and a cult headed by the Exif archbishop Metphies rising among the surviving troops, Haruo goes into hiding with Maina. Metphies and the Exif cardinal Endurph exploit the soldiers' belief to summon forth their god, the three headed higher-dimensional being known as Ghidorah. Ghidorah destroys the Aratrum and descends to the Earth's surface to kill Godzilla. Godzilla is unable to affect Ghidorah due to the monster's extradimensional nature, and is hopelessly outmatched. With the telepathic intervention of the Houtua's goddess, Mothra, Haruo resists Metphies' influence and severs his link to Ghidorah, rendering the entity subject to this dimension's laws and allowing Godzilla to dispatch him back to his own dimension. In the aftermath, the surviving humans integrate with the Houtua. When Martin Lazzari discovers a way to reactivate the Nanometal of the last surviving Vulture, Haruo understands that this will only renew the cycle of destruction and ruin that led to Godzilla's war with humanity. Haruo takes Yuko's comatose Nanometal-infected body aboard the last Vulture and allows Godzilla to destroy him along with the last of the Nanometal, ensuring that humanity will find a way to survive and coexist with Godzilla as part of Houtua society.
