— Jia, signing to Kong (Godzilla vs. Kong)

Jia is a character who first appeared in the 2021 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla vs. Kong and is set to reappear in its 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

A deaf orphaned Iwi girl, Jia has formed a special bond with Kong, who cares for and protects her. She is able to communicate with Kong via sign language. Jia is the adopted daughter of Ilene Andrews, an anthropological linguist working for Monarch. She played a key role in Monarch's 2024 mission to relocate Kong from Skull Island to the Hollow Earth, helping to convince the Titan to enter the underground realm. She also convinced Kong to assist his foe Godzilla against Mechagodzilla in Hong Kong. After the battle, she and Andrews stayed at the research station monitoring Kong in his new home within the Hollow Earth.

Godzilla vs. Kong

When Skull Island was enveloped in a perpetual storm, Jia's family were among the members of the native Iwi tribe who perished. Kong, the island's Titan guardian, rescued Jia and formed a bond with her. Jia and Kong communicated with each other through sign language, but hid this ability from Monarch. Jia was adopted by Dr. Ilene Andrews, an anthropological linguist working for Monarch assigned to monitor Kong. By 2024, Kong was contained within Monarch Outpost #236 on Skull Island, a gigantic dome which simulated the island's original environment prior to the eternal storm. Jia often visited Kong within the unit, but saw him become restless and continually try to escape. After Godzilla unexpectedly attacked an Apex Cybernetics facility in Pensacola, Florida, former Monarch operative Dr. Nathan Lind approached Andrews on behalf of Apex and proposed an operation to relocate Kong to the Hollow Earth in order to uncover an energy source believed to exist there that would be capable of powering an anti-Godzilla weapon. Andrews accepted on the condition that she was in charge of Kong, with Jia accompanying.

Kong was drugged and carried aboard a huge transport ship surrounded by a naval escort, with Jia, Andrews, and Lind remaining in the ship's bridge. One night, Kong became agitated during a storm and began pulling at his chains. Jia approached Kong to calm him down, demonstrating their ability to communicate via sign language. Andrews was amazed, as she had been trying to establish communication with Kong for years. The following morning, Lind asked Andrews if it was possible for Jia to give orders to Kong. Jia sensed Godzilla approaching and warned the others just before the Titan tore through the fleet and capsized the transport ship. As the bridge flooded, Lind released Kong's restraints and allowed him to defend himself and right the ship. Kong fought to protect Jia and the others, but was outmatched in the water by Godzilla, who began to drag him into the depths. Fortunately, a volley of depth charges disoriented Godzilla and allowed Kong to climb back aboard the ship. As Godzilla departed, victorious, Jia signed to Kong thanking him for saving them. In order to avoid attracting Godzilla again, Lind had Kong flown to the Hollow Earth access point in Antarctica by helicopters and Ospreys.

Once there, Kong hesitated to enter the Hollow Earth. Lind and Andrews asked Jia to sign to Kong that there might be others of his kind within the Hollow Earth, which convinced him to charge into the entrance. Jia and the others followed him within Apex antigravity vehicles called HEAVs, passing through the gravitational distortion and entering the vast underground realm. Two Warbats attacked the HEAVs, but Kong managed to dispatch them both. Eventually, he came upon a huge stone temple, with a door bearing the handprint of his species. Kong opened the door and entered the structure, finding it empty save for a giant throne and the skeletal remains of a fallen Titan, with a giant axe embedded in its skull. Kong lifted the axe and pounded his chest in triumph before seating himself upon the throne. The axe glowed with a blue aura, which Kong followed to a glowing pattern on the ground: the energy source that the expedition was seeking. Apex used a drone to harvest the energy and relay the data to headquarters in Hong Kong so that it could be copied. Andrews protested Apex taking the energy source for itself, prompting the company's guards to draw their guns on her, Jia, and Lind. Kong roared angrily just before Godzilla's atomic breath breached the temple, awakening the Hellhawks roosting on the ceiling. Jia, Andrews, and Lind escaped to a HEAV in the confusion, and followed Kong through the passage opened by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong.

Kong engaged in a rematch with Godzilla in the city, utilizing the axe he found in the Hollow Earth to even the odds. The HEAV carrying Jia, Andrews, and Lind weaved between the battling Titans and narrowly avoided being destroyed. While Kong was able to hold his own against Godzilla for a while, he was eventually overwhelmed and left near death. In the meantime, Apex fed the copied Hollow Earth energy into its ultimate weapon, Mechagodzilla, unintentionally causing it to go berserk and kill its creators before storming into the city. As Mechagodzilla savagely beat its organic counterpart, Jia disembarked from the HEAV and approached the fallen Kong, feeling his fading heartbeat. Lind took matters into his own hands and landed the HEAV onto Kong's chest, overloading it and causing it to self-destruct. The explosion acted as a defibrillator, reviving Kong instantly. Jia signed to Kong, telling him that Godzilla was no longer his enemy and that the mechanical Titan was. Kong agreed, and Jia begged him to be careful before he came to Godzilla's aid. By working together, the two Titans overcame and destroyed Mechagodzilla. Kong collapsed with exhaustion, but prepared to defend himself again once Godzilla approached. After exchanging looks, the Titans ended their war and went their separate ways.

Some time later, Jia watched Kong alongside Andrews and Lind from an observation post within the Hollow Earth. As Kong passed by, he signed the word "home" to Jia, who smiled back at him.

Kong and Me

Jia told of her unusual friendship with King Kong, the Titan ruler of Skull Island. On the beach, Kong built Jia a huge sand castle and created a pool by cupping his hands together. Further inland, they explored the woods, watched clouds, and tried to play hide-and-seek, though Kong's footprints made him easy to find. Kong uprooted a tree trying to mimic Jia's flower-picking, and she convinced him to replant it. As the day ended, they tried seeing the world from each other's perspective: Kong lying in a field watching butterflies, Jia sitting on his head watching the sunset.

Comics

Kingdom Kong

Shortly after Kong banished the evil Camazotz back to the Hollow Earth, Monarch attempted to evacuate the native Iwi as the storm overtook Skull Island. Jia was present during the evacuation, separated from her family.

Trivia

  • While the ending of the graphic novel Kingdom Kong shows Monarch evacuating dozens of Iwi from Skull Island, in Godzilla vs. Kong Ilene Andrews states that Jia is the only Iwi who survived the storm that engulfed the island. This apparent contradiction has yet to be explained. Godzilla vs. Kong: The Official Movie Novelization, which is non-canonical, references Kingdom Kong but changes the ending, with the surviving Iwi besides Jia refusing evacuation and "vanish[ing]" shortly afterwards.
  • Two Expedition Logs in the mobile game Godzilla Battle Line suggest that Jia is able to speak verbally instead of signing: "As we venture in, we could hear the voice of the young girl chattering away" and "The young girl was speaking enthusiastically to a gigantic monster multiple times her size".[1]
    • Jia is mentioned in Kong's in-game biography, but her name is misspelled as "Gia."
