Kristina Sumres is a supporting character in IDW Publishing's 2013-2015 comic series Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. A dedicated Megazoologist, Kristina was part of a kaiju investigation team that had frequent run-ins with the monsters of Earth alongside fellow researcher Lucy Casprell. She eventually became a member of the Monster Islands Research Team.

Personality

Kristina Sumres is very kind and loyal to her allies, and is always willing to lend a hand to those in need. This is particularly apparent with regards to her relationship with Lucy, as Kristina readily and frequently provides Lucy with emotional support and a shoulder to lean on. Additionally, Kristina also has a deep appreciation for the Earth’s kaiju, so much so that she couldn't help but tear up upon seeing a bloodied and seemingly-deceased Anguirus in the wake of his battle with Mechagodzilla.

History

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #2

Kristina on Dr. Ando's kaiju investigation team

Kristina Sumres was one of several passionate Megazoologists selected to be part of Dr. Kenji Ando’s own kaiju investigation team alongside members Jeremy, Shawn Lelonzo, Kyle Fellows, Shannon Nunez, Marcia Marshall, and Jason Ford. Following Zilla and Godzilla’s battle in Honolulu, Hawaii, Dr. Ando introduced Kristina and the rest of the team to his latest and seemingly fearless recruit, Lucy Casprell.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #4

Kristina and the rest of Dr. Ando's team traveled to Beijing, China, to investigate reports of a new kaiju. In the airport, Kristina talked with Lucy while the team watched a news report of Godzilla as he fought Destoroyah, with Mothra and her larvae soon joining the skirmish. Later on, after arriving at the Huanren Reservoir, the group witnessed the arrival of the kaiju Varan, with Chinese authorities revealing that he was not the kaiju they were searching for.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #5

In the panic that ensued as the kaiju investigation team scrambled to escape Varan’s fury while the monster engaged the Chinese military, Kristina was knocked to the ground by Jeremy, though Lucy managed to save her life and led her to safety. When Rodan joined the fray and became Varan’s new target, Kristina and the group managed to escape to a nearby secret mountain base. Their refuge was short-lived, however, when the battle outside began demolishing the base itself, forcing the team to evacuate once again. Ultimately, after Lucy freed the captive kaiju Gaira from the crumbling base, Kristina and the team were able to escape the madness with their lives.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #7

Drs. Allison and Yumi Nagata arranged to meet with Dr. Ando's team after the group left China.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #8

Kristina and Dr. Ando's team, alongside Drs. Allison and Nagata, were transferred to a naval fleet assembled around the shores of the uncharted island chain where Godzilla fought another new kaiju. Just as Dr. Ando revealed that their team was there to identify the new kaiju, the fleet suddenly came under attack by Titanosaurus, Gezora, and Manda.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #9

Titanosaurus attacked the aircraft carrier that held Dr. Ando's team, though Kristina avoided being crushed beneath his claws. Ultimately, Godzilla was able to repel the sea monsters and all of the Megazoologists managed to escape the mayhem relatively unscathed, with Kristina providing assistance to her battered professor. However, Lucy had been thrown overboard with her whereabouts unknown to the others.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #10

Following Lucy's rescue and reunion with her team aboard the USS Simon, Kristina joined her and other members of the team as they watched a meeting between Drs. Ando, Allison, Nagata, and various world leaders to discuss plans of establishing a new containment site for the kaiju called the Monster Islands. While Lucy later departed to assist Steven Woods and his Counter-Kaiju Reaction Forces with an incident involving Gaira and Sanda in Australia, Kristina remained with Dr. Ando and his team to help with surveying the islands.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #11

After the capture of Baragon - another new kaiju who was to be transported to the Monster Islands alongside Sanda and Gaira - Steven consulted Kristina and Lucy about the monster, with Kristina theorizing that Baragon’s cranial horn may have been the source of his fire power. Later, as Lucy, Kristina, and Jason were hanging out on deck with the CKR's Mechagodzilla, the USS Simon abruptly came under siege by numerous Juvenile Destoroyahs, which had been sent by the Devonians.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #12

With a horde of Destoroyahs swarming the ship, Steven and fellow CKR soldier Chavez ushered Kristina and her allies below deck to safety. However, they remained close by and helped rescue injured soldiers by bringing them below deck. In the aftermath of a great struggle which saw both the defeat of the Devonians and the disappearance of Godzilla, Dr. Ando spoke with Kristina, who volunteered to stay on the islands with Jason and Lucy to help him and the CKR establish the islands’ facilities.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #13

Over the next few years, Kristina joined the Counter-Kaiju Reaction Forces and became a member of the Monster Islands Research Team, living on the islands alongside Lucy, Jason, and Chavez. Four years after the defeat of the Devonians, Kristina and Jason continued to work diligently on the islands, at one point working on the islands’ cameras.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #14

In the wake of Lucy and Chavez's discovery of a seemingly-dead Anguirus in Russia, a team was put together to investigate what had happened to the monster, which included Lucy, Chavez, Kristina, and Jason. Once they reached the fallen kaiju’s body in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Kristina and Lucy collected evidence from the area, at which point Kristina believed that she saw Anguirus move. Soon after, the kaiju proved that Kristina’s eyes had not deceived her as he awoke, though a second CKR team was able to restrain him with Mechagodzilla and revealed strange missiles imbedded within his underside, which greatly concerned Chavez. Unbeknownst to the team, the culprit behind the attack on the kaiju was one of many new Mechagodzilla units that had been secretly built by the Cryog aliens.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #15

Though the team expected to bring Anguirus back to the Monster Islands, Chavez was told that they were to transport the monster to a new facility close by, with the team later joining the helicopter escort accompanying the CKR’s Mechagodzilla and Anguirus. However, without warning, the escort came under fire from the Cryogs’ Mechagodzilla units before they could arrive, which downed the entire fleet - including the helicopter carrying Kristina and her friends.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #16

Surviving the crash, Chavez, Lucy, Kristina, and Jason managed to free themselves from the wreckage, only to find themselves surrounded by the Spetsnaz before they could offer aid to other survivors. Soon after, the team heard Godzilla’s roar from the nearby facility where they were to bring Anguirus, confirming the return of the King of the Monsters as he did battle against the Cryogs’ robots. Following Godzilla’s victory with the help of Anguirus, Kristina and the remaining CKR personnel established temporary shelters as they awaited extraction by Steven’s inbound recovery team.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #17

As the team witnessed two Mechagodzilla units and a Cryog ship escaping the remains of the facility, the Spetsnaz led survivors out of its wreckage, including two unidentified and unconscious twins. Once Lucy touched their hands together, she suffered an inexplicable psychic vision that caused her to faint, though Kristina and Chavez provided her aid. Soon after, the team was finally extracted from Russia. A few weeks later, Kristina, Lucy, and Jason would venture to Brazil to investigate mysterious kaiju eggs that had been brought to Sao Paolo, though Kristina struggled to deal with the heat. Just as Kristina and Lucy began studying the eggs, they suddenly started to hatch.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #18

Kristina and Jason save Lucy from a swarm of Meganulon

With Lucy suffering from another unexplained psychic episode that temporarily incapacitated her, Kristina and Jason were forced to act fast as the eggs hatched into Meganulon, which began attacking everyone in the area. Jason passed his camera onto Kristina so he could carry Lucy to safety, only for Kristina to drop the camera as they fled, forcing her to turn back in efforts to retrieve it. Before a Meganulon could capitalize on her mistake, a recovered Lucy was quick to to protect Kristina by kicking the insect monster in the head, at which point Godzilla appeared on the shore whilst grappling with Ebirah. As the titans brought their fight to land, the group desperately fled the rapidly deteriorating situation before coming across a truck that got them out of immediate danger. After yet another new kaiju known as Megaguirus arrived on the scene, the team finally managed to get to safety, where Kristina comforted the distraught Lucy. Lucy warned her allies that the Shobijin has previously told her about how the kaiju would rise up to defend the planet whenever it is threatened, leading her to believe that the dangers facing them and the world were far from over. Later, once Megaguirus departed with Godzilla, Kristina and the team returned to the city to help survivors, with Jason promising Steven that he would look after Lucy and Kristina.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #21

After the team had been pulled out of Brazil, Kristina was present when Steven called Lucy to inform her of the loss of the Monster Islands to alien creatures known as the Trilopods, and that the team was being rerouted to Dr. Ando’s lab in Japan for a new mission.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #22

Just as the team arrived at Dr. Ando’s lab, they witnessed a live news report showing the arrival of the colossal Trilopod hive in Los Angeles. They then saw a pack of Trilopods attack the incapacitated Godzilla and use his DNA to transform into Godzilla-Trilopod hybrids.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #23

In accordance with a plan devised by the Shobijin, Lucy, Kristina, and Jason were dispatched to Okinawa along with a group of CKR soldiers to locate and awaken the legendary guardian King Caesar, who the Shobijin believed would aid Godzilla in the fight against the Trilopods. However, when the guardian monster did not wake upon being freed from the side of a cliff, Kristina and Jason tried to cheer up a discouraged Lucy until Battra arrived, who was seeking to kill the Shobijin for the twin psychics who had affected Lucy – Minette and Mallory. After Battra wiped out the CKR team, Kristina and her allies were cornered by the twins. Before Battra could kill them, however, a revived King Caesar appeared and saved them from the winged kaiju, at which point the team attempted to flee by scaling the cliff. Just then, a Trilopod hunting pod also landed nearby and released a Trilopod, though once more King Caesar saved the team and killed the alien monster with ease. Minette and Mallory then incapacitated Jason and took the women hostage before they were unexpectedly abandoned by Battra, stunning them long enough to allow Lucy and Kristina to fight back and free themselves. After Kristina and Lucy helped Jason recover, King Caesar took the team into his hand, with the Shobijin telling them to trust him. King Caesar then killed Minette and Mallory before allowing the Trilopods to capture him so that he and the team would be taken to the Trilopod hive.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #25

The Trilopod hunting pod carrying King Caesar and the team arrived in Los Angles and reconnected with the hive, where the guardian monster released Kristina and her allies before he began freeing the other captive kaiju the Trilopods had abducted. Lucy called Steven to let him know of their whereabouts, prompting Steven to embark on a rescue mission with Chavez. Once King Caesar broke the other kaiju out of the hive and led them into battle to help Godzilla, Steven and Chavez were able to get in and locate the team. During their escape, Kristina, Lucy, Jason, the Shobijin, and Chavez were able to evacuate, though Steven appeared to be crushed by Magita when it emerged out of the hive. While the kaiju battled, Kristina and the others searched for Steven, only to find that he had been fatally injured. They remained by his side until he succumbed to his injuries, then witnessed the exhausted Godzilla return to sea after he defeated Magita.

In the aftermath, most of the kaiju disappeared around the globe, while Kristina and Lucy would eventually get married.
