After the company's rights to the character expired, a mutated version of the monster appeared in several comics in 1985 and 1986. A creature based on Godzilla's likeness appeared as a cameo for the character in ''The Mighty Avengers #1'' in 2007, however it is not meant as an explicit re-emergence of the canonical character. After losing the rights to Godzilla in 1979, Marvel was forced to abandon the character, but continued to use their original characters that appeared alongside him.
