Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ,   Mekagojira) is a mecha created by Toho that first appeared in the 1974 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.

To date, there have been four distinct incarnations of Mechagodzilla featured in the Godzilla franchise. The first version of the character was introduced in the 1974 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, where it was a creation of the evil Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens designed to destroy Godzilla and conquer the Earth. This Mechagodzilla returned in Terror of Mechagodzilla, where it was rebuilt by its alien masters and fought alongside the monster Titanosaurus. Mechagodzilla was reintroduced for the Heisei series in the 1993 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. This Mechagodzilla was a weapon built by G-Force, a military branch of the United Nations, to defend mankind from Godzilla, and was constructed using components recovered from the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah. The third iteration of Mechagodzilla, known more commonly as Kiryu, first appeared in the film Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla in 2002. Like the Heisei Mechagodzilla, Kiryu was a human-built weapon, this time controlled by the JSDF. Kiryu was unique among the Mechagodzillas in that he was a true cyborg, constructed around the remains of the original Godzilla that appeared in 1954. Kiryu was susceptible to becoming possessed by the first Godzilla's spirit, leading him to act autonomously and run wild. Kiryu returned in the following film, Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., where he again did battle with Godzilla, this time with the assistance of Mothra and her twin larvae. A fourth incarnation of Mechagodzilla made a brief appearance in GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters, and returned in the second entry in the GODZILLA anime trilogy.[10]

This is an overview page. To view information on specific incarnations of Mechagodzilla, please visit the Mechagodzilla incarnation subpages.

Name

The name "Mechagodzilla" comes from "mecha," which is derived from the word "mechanical," and Godzilla's name. In Terror of Mechagodzilla, the rebuilt Mechagodzilla is known as Mechagodzilla 2 (メカゴジラ2,   Mekagojira Tsū).

The Heisei Mechagodzilla's official designation is UX-02-93. When this Mechagodzilla combines with the warship Garuda, it becomes known as Super Mechagodzilla (スーパーメカゴジラ,   Sūpā Mekagojira).

The Millennium Mechagodzilla is known as Kiryu (機龍,   Kiryū), which means "Machine Dragon" in Japanese. Kiryu's full title is Multipurpose Fighting System Type-3 (3式多目的戦闘システム,   San-Shiki Tamokuteki Sentō Shisutemu), abbreviated as MFS-3. In Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., Kiryu is repaired and upgraded as Modified Type-3 Kiryu (3式機龍改,   San-Shiki-Kiryū Aratame).

While "Mechagodzilla" is the official trademarked English name for the character, it is also frequently spelled as "MechaGodzilla," "Mecha Godzilla" or "Mecha-Godzilla."

Design

The Mechagodzilla incarnations vary greatly in appearance, but all share some common traits. All three Mechagodzillas are giant robots modeled after Godzilla, with silver-colored bodies, orange or yellow eyes, and a weapon port on their torsos. The Heisei and Millennium Mechagodzillas are both taller than Godzilla, while the Showa incarnation is the same height as him. The Mechagodzillas tend to have smaller Template:Scutes than Godzilla, as well as a shorter tail. Only Kiryu possesses a full-length movable tail.

Origins

The Showa Mechagodzilla is a battle machine constructed by the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens following close study of the real Godzilla. With their home planet on the verge of being sucked into a black hole, the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens traveled to Earth and built Mechagodzilla in an attempt to conquer the planet for their race. Initially, Mechagodzilla wore a fake skin that disguised it as Godzilla. After Mechagodzilla was destroyed by Godzilla, it was rebuilt by the aliens the following year, now called Mechagodzilla 2.

The Heisei Mechagodzilla is a weapon constructed by G-Force, the anti-Godzilla military branch of the United Nations. After G-Force's first anti-Godzilla weapon, Garuda, was deemed too weak, G-Force salvaged the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah, a cyborg from the future, and used them to build Mechagodzilla.

Kiryu is a bio-robot constructed by the Anti-Megalosaurus Force, a branch of the JSDF specializing in fighting kaiju, to combat Godzilla. Kiryu is constructed around the skeleton of the original Godzilla, who was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer in 1954. Kiryu was programmed with special "DNA computers" designed to make it operate like an organic creature, although the DNA sequence used in these computers had the unintended effect of leaving Kiryu susceptible to Godzilla's roar, which reawakens the original Godzilla's spirit and causes Kiryu to go berserk.

The anime Mechagodzilla was constructed in secret by humanity and the Bilusaludo in Hamamatsu, Japan in the year 2046, with the intention of it being the ultimate anti-Godzilla weapon. Unfortunately, Godzilla arrived in Hamamatsu in March of that same year and engaged in a final decisive battle with the United Earth. Godzilla was triumphant, and Mechagodzilla was abandoned prior to being completed, with the United Earth organizing an Earth evacuation plan after their latest defeat. However, Mechagodzilla remained intact over the ensuing millennia, lying in wait to be discovered once again.[11]

History

Showa Series

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla first appeared from Mount Fuji disguised as Godzilla and rampaged through the countryside. Anguirus emerged from underground and suddenly attacked it, but was brutally beaten, even having his jaw broken. Mechagodzilla then moved on to Tokyo, where it was intercepted by the real Godzilla. After a brief skirmish, Mechagodzilla shed its disguise and revealed the full extent of its weaponry. Mechagodzilla blasted Godzilla with its finger missiles and fired its laser vision at Godzilla. Godzilla countered with his atomic breath, causing the beams to lock and explode, severely damaging Mechagodzilla and badly wounding Godzilla. Mechagodzilla was called back to the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens' base in Okinawa to be repaired. The aliens captured a human scientist, Hideto Miyajima, and forced him to repair Mechagodzilla in exchange for his daughter's life. After Mechagodzilla was completed, it was unleashed once again and sent to destroy King Caesar, an ancient guardian monster of Okinawa. Mechagodzilla dominated the battle, but before it could defeat King Caesar, Godzilla appeared once again, seeking a rematch. Godzilla and King Caesar then joined forces against Mechagodzilla, and eventually forced the mechanical monster to attempt to retreat. Godzilla called upon his newfound magnetic powers to pull Mechagodzilla toward him. Godzilla held Mechagodzilla still while King Caesar repeatedly attacked it, then twisted the machine's head off. Mechagodzilla's body then exploded along with the aliens' base, ending the invasion.

Terror of Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla 2 in Terror of Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla was rebuilt by the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens in another attempt to take over the Earth. Its wreckage was recovered in the waters off Okinawa, and the machine was rebuilt in an underground base in the Japanese countryside. This time, the aliens recruited the help of a deranged Earthling scientist, Shinzo Mafune, for their invasion. Mafune helped the aliens to improve Mechagodzilla, and also offered them the assistance of the monster Titanosaurus, which he controlled. The aliens installed the control device for Mechagodzilla inside of Mafune's cybernetically-modified daughter, Katsura, because Mafune said that Mechagodzilla required living brain tissue to be perfect.

To show off Mechagodzilla's upgraded weaponry, Mechagodzilla was deployed in Tokyo, with Titanosaurus providing backup. Unleashing wave after wave of its eye beams, Mechagodzilla set large areas of the city on fire, and its finger missiles now had the capability to explode with such force as to throw buildings and vehicles into the air. Titanosaurus also wreaked havoc by creating gale-force winds with his tail that demolished structures with little effort. Titanosaurus was suddenly attacked, and fell to the ground. Revealing himself from behind a curtain of smoke, Godzilla arrived to challenge the monsters, but was outmatched. While Titanosaurus battled Godzilla head-on, Mechagodzilla blasted its organic counterpart with various weapons. Titanosaurus kicked Godzilla into a ditch, while Mechagodzilla buried him with its missiles. The humans intervened and distracted Titanosaurus with a sonic wave oscillator, allowing Godzilla to take on Mechagodzilla one-on-one. Godzilla removed Mechagodzilla's head once again, but this time the mechanical monster had a small "brain" placed in its neck, allowing it to continue to operate without its head and fire a powerful concentrated laser. However, Katsura Mafune committed suicide to stop Mechagodzilla, and the machine shut down. Godzilla seized the opportunity and threw Mechagodzilla into a ravine, then destroyed his mechanical doppelganger for good with a blast of his atomic breath. The ravine then collapsed on top of Mechagodzilla's ruins, preventing the aliens from retrieving and rebuilding Mechagodzilla again.

Heisei Series

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

In 1992, the United Nations formed the United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center, a special branch dedicated to combating the threat posed by Godzilla. The U.N.G.C.C.'s military branch, G-Force, began construction on an anti-Godzilla machine known as Garuda. However, G-Force concluded that the Garuda's combat capabilities were too limited to be effective against Godzilla. Using Futurian technology salvaged from Mecha-King Ghidorah's central head, G-Force began construction of a much more advanced machine built in Godzilla's own image. The machine, Mechagodzilla, was finally completed in 1994. The mech would first see action when Godzilla appeared in Japan and began heading to the city of Kyoto. Mechagodzilla was launched and engaged Godzilla in the countryside. Mechagodzilla held the upper hand against its organic counterpart, knocking Godzilla to the ground with its impressive array of lasers and missiles. Mechagodzilla fired its shock anchors into Godzilla, electrocuting him and causing him to foam at the mouth. Suddenly, Godzilla emitted a shockwave of energy that caused the electrical current to be reversed and travel back up Mechagodzilla's shock anchor cables. Mechagodzilla began to short-circuit and was rendered immobile as Godzilla rose back to his feet. Godzilla charged at Mechagodzilla, knocking the machine onto its back, before continuing on to Kyoto.

Mechagodzilla was brought back to G-Force headquarters for repairs, which were expected to take several weeks. After being transferred to parking duty after failing to appear to pilot Mechagodzilla, Kazuma Aoki pulled aside Mechagodzilla's lead engineer, Leo Asimov. Kazuma proposed a plan to modify the Garuda and allow it to be more useful against Godzilla in combat. When Asimov asked what they would do with Mechagodzilla, Kazuma revealed a proposal to combine the Garuda and Mechagodzilla into a single, more powerful machine. Asimov agreed, and both mechs were modified. Meanwhile, G-Force was formulating a new plan to kill Godzilla. They had learned that Godzilla possessed a secondary brain in his hip that controlled lower body function due to BabyGodzilla, an infant Godzillasaurus in G-Force's custody, possessing the same structure. G-Force planned to use Baby Godzilla as bait to lure Godzilla to the Ogasawara Islands, then have Mechagodzilla use its shock anchor cables to destroy Godzilla's second brain and paralyze him, then finally kill him with its arsenal of weapons. Preparations were made, and Baby Godzilla was airlifted to the Ogasawara Islands along with his human surrogate mother, Azusa Gojo. En route, the canister holding them was captured by Fire Rodan, who touched down and tried to break the canister open.

Mechagodzilla was quickly deployed to attack Rodan and save Baby and Azusa. Mechagodzilla arrived and confronted Rodan, who fought back with his newly-acquired uranium heat beam. Aoki arrived in the Garuda shortly after to back up Mechagodzilla, distracting Rodan with its laser beams while Mechagodzilla charged its plasma grenade. Rodan took to the sky and rammed the Garuda, causing it to crash into a building. Mechagodzilla used its plasma grenade to blast Rodan into a skyscraper, then approached him. Rodan sprang back up and used his beak to knock out Mechagodzilla's right eye. Mechagodzilla fired the plasma grenade again, shredding Rodan's chest and sending him flying into a nearby building. With Rodan seemingly dead, Godzilla suddenly appeared from the ocean, roaring and challenging Mechagodzilla to battle once again. Mechagodzilla turned to face Godzilla and fired its mega buster beam at him. Godzilla countered with his atomic breath, causing the beams to lock and explode. Mechagodzilla was disabled by the explosion, allowing Godzilla to charge and attack it up close. Godzilla easily overpowered Mechagodzilla, slamming it onto the ground and stomping on its head. The Garuda regained flight and fired at Godzilla, allowing Mechagodzilla to get back up. The Garuda then flew onto Mechagodzilla's back and combined with it.

Super Mechagodzilla
Super Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

The Garuda attached itself to Mechagodzilla's back, forming Super Mechagodzilla (スーパーメカゴジラ,   Sūpā Mekagojira). More powerful than ever before, Super Mechagodzilla took flight and unleashed its payload of laser beams onto Godzilla, knocking him to the ground. As Godzilla staggered to his feet, Super Mechagodzilla fired paralyzer missiles at Godzilla then launched its shock anchor cables into his hip. Mechagodzilla then began to discharge electricity through the cables, shattering Godzilla's secondary brain and sending him falling headfirst to the ground. With Godzilla paralyzed, it appeared Super Mechagodzilla would be victorious. As Super Mechagodzilla prepared to finish Godzilla, Baby Godzilla broke free of the canister holding him and roared out, getting the attention of the mortally-wounded Rodan. Rodan took flight and flew near Godzilla, prompting Super Mechagodzilla to shoot him down with its mega buster. Rodan fell onto Godzilla, and it appeared the two monsters would die together. However, Rodan began transferring his life force into Godzilla, regenerating his secondary brain and revitalizing him. As Rodan faded away into nothing, Godzilla rose to his feet and roared, giving off huge amounts of heat. The intensity of the heat caused Super Mechagodzilla's synthetic diamond armor plate to melt. Godzilla fired his new spiral red atomic breath at Super Mechagodzilla, staggering it back and causing severe damage. Super Mechagodzilla fired back with its mega buster, engaging in another beam lock. This time, Godzilla's beam overpowered Mechagodzilla's, causing it to fall backward into a building. Godzilla proceeded to fire his spiral beam at Mechagodzilla until the mech's head was blasted off and its entire body erupted in flames. Godzilla roared victoriously and went to find Baby Godzilla. Despite Mechagodzilla's computer claiming that no crew survived its destruction, all of its pilots survived the explosion. Mechagodzilla's pilots looked on from afar as Godzilla and his newly-adopted son waded out to sea together, remarking that life always triumphs over artificial life.

Millennium Series

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

Although the original Godzilla had been killed in 1954 by the Oxygen Destroyer, Japan still found itself under attack from other monsters such as Mothra and Gaira over the decades. When a second Godzilla landed in Tateyama in 1999, this was the last straw. The Anti-Megalosaurus Force (AMF) division of the Japanese Xenomorph Self-Defense Force (JXSDF) proposed to dredge up the skeleton of the first Godzilla from the ocean and use it as a skeletal framework for constructing a mechanical Godzilla to combat the new Godzilla.

The plan was executed, with cloned DNA from the bones inserted into the quasi-organic computer controls, intended to take over subconscious motor control functions for the crew. By 2003, the Mechagodzilla, nicknamed Kiryu, was ready. Kiryu was unleashed when Godzilla surfaced at Hakkeijima, but when the cyborg faced off against Godzilla, something horrific happened: the cyborg's own memories of when it was Godzilla were reawakened by the modern Godzilla's own roars. Kiryu broke free of its pilot, Akane Yashiro, and proceeded to trash Yokohama, ignoring attempts at manual override. Godzilla left the city and headed back to the ocean, with Kiryu continuing its rampage until its fuel ran out.

The Japanese public was not amused. Hastily recalled, Kiryu received quite a few weapon upgrades in addition to new computer control software routines. When Godzilla appeared in Tokyo a few days later, both branches of the JSDF tried stopping him without the mecha's help, but it was useless. With Akane at the mecha's control again, Kiryu was sent out.

The second battle went well until Kiryu's receiver was damaged. Akane wanted to enter Kiryu and repair it herself despite orders against it. She then piloted the cyborg directly from the control room in its skull, carrying Godzilla out into Tokyo Bay once more. Akane tried to destroy Godzilla with Kiryu's ultimate weapon, the Absolute Zero Cannon, but the fight ended in a draw. Godzilla went back to the sea, though not before suffering a horribly shredded chest, and Kiryu was taken back to AMF headquarters after suffering a destroyed right arm, a damaged Absolute Zero Cannon, and empty powercells.

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

In 2004, Akane was sent to America for further flight training. Taking her place in case Godzilla appeared was Akiba. Kiryu underwent heavy repairs, having his Absolute Zero Cannon replaced with a triple Hyper Maser Cannon and a collapsible drill installed in his hand. After a year of modifications, the Modified Type-3 Kiryu (3式機龍改,   San-Shiki-Kiryū Aratame) was nearly completed.

Mothra's twin fairies, the Shobijin, appeared to warn Japan. They claimed that building Kiryu using the bones of the Godzilla that appeared in 1954 was a violation of the natural order of things, attracting the current Godzilla. The twins further claimed that Mothra would gladly take Kiryu's place in protecting Japan if they agreed to dismantle Kiryu, and if they declined, Mothra would be forced to attack Japan. Since Kiryu had been built partially to defend against a second attack from Mothra herself, the Japanese government declined.

But when Godzilla appeared in Tokyo once again, Mothra voluntarily engaged him, and Prime Minister Hayato Igarashi was shamed into aiding her. Kiryu flew into battle again. Despite the team up, the current adult Mothra was killed and Kiryu's transmitter damaged once again. Just like Akane before him, Kiryu's chief engineer Yoshito Chujo entered Kiryu for repairs, but remained inside the mech during the battle after Godzilla's beam had accidentally struck both of the hatch doors, damaging and jamming them.

Teaming up with the newly-hatched twin Mothra larvae, Kiryu was able to use his drill in his right arm to injure Godzilla's chest even more, eventually reaching and tearing up his insides. While Godzilla screamed in pain, Kiryu fired his Triple Hyper Maser and Maser Cannons at Godzilla, making Godzilla's roar trigger another flashback in Kiryu which was directly channeled to Yoshito. Godzilla was then wrapped up by the twin Mothra larvae's silk. Unable to fight, Godzilla dropped to the ground, allowing Kiryu to win the battle. After being ordered to finish Godzilla, Kiryu broke free of Akiba's control. Instead of finishing his battle, he merely subdued Godzilla, carrying him out to sea. After releasing Yoshito to safety, Kiryu displayed a message saying "Sayonara Yoshito" on a computer monitor, then plunged into the depths with his organic counterpart, allowing himself to finally rest in peace, while ensuring Godzilla would survive.

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

Mechagodzilla was constructed by humanity and the Bilusaludo in Hamamatsu, Japan, in 2046. However, Godzilla breached the city that December and forced the United Earth to retreat before Mechagodzilla could be activated.

After discovering that the Houtua used Nanometal to construct their arrowheads, Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu and Rilu-Elu Belu-Be believed that Mechagodzilla's production facility could still be salvageable, giving them a way to finally destroy Godzilla Earth. The majority of the United Earth forces who had survived their earlier encounter with Godzilla Earth traveled to the foot of Mount Fuji to the former location of the Mechagodzilla facility. After passing through a cave, the group was attacked by a flock of Flying-type Servum. As the creatures attacked, they were suddenly impaled by spikes of Nanometal which erupted from the ground. The monsters' carcasses were then covered by a coat of Nanometal. The forces continued to advance, and in the crater below discovered a huge facility composed of Nanometal. Galu-Gu and Belu-Be realized that Mechagodzilla must have survived the destruction of its facility in 2046 and had remained active, spreading its Nanometal across the surrounding area and continuing its directive to "destroy Godzilla." The Nanometal's limiter had been damaged, and as a result the nanomachines had evolved and managed to reconstruct the original production facility, but at several times the size. They dubbed the new facility "Mechagodzilla City," and believed it could finally hold the key to killing Godzilla. As the troops approached the City, they passed the carcasses of more Servum which had been Nanometalized. Galu-Gu and Belu-Be insisted that Mechagodzilla had only assimilated them because of its directive, and would not do the same to humans. After the group entered Mechagodzilla City, they came across several Nanometalized human corpses, but the Bilusaludo assured everyone that the humans were already dead before being Nanometalized and had only been absorbed because they were dead. They eventually found Mechagodzilla's chamber, with Mechagodzilla's still-intact head buried under debris. While its body had been destroyed, Mechagodzilla's head contained an A.I. which was still half-active allowed its Nanometal to continue functioning and build Mechagodzilla City. Galu-Gu completely reactivated Mechagodzilla's A.I., allowing them to use the City to its full potential. They set up a control room where they set Mechagodzilla City to install a heat-proof shield and begin constructing new weapons to use against Godzilla, such as superior modified Powered Suits called Vultures. They planned to destroy Godzilla Earth just as they had successfully defeated Godzilla Filius. Godzilla Earth would be lured to Mechagodzilla City and trapped in a pit of liquid Nanometal. They would isolate and play back the sound of his Asymmetrically Permeable Shield and wait for it to collapse, then destroy his dorsal plates using the City's cannons, temporarily disabling the shield. EMP Harpoons would then be fired into Godzilla Earth's back, causing electromagnetic energy to run wild inside of him until he exploded.

United Earth soldiers discover Mechagodzilla's head in GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle

When it became clear Godzilla Earth would soon find Mechagodzilla City, Haruo Sakaki asked Galu-Gu to postpone construction of defenses and focus on completing the weapons to kill Godzilla. The diversion of its resources caused Mechagodzilla City to cease releasing steam to conceal itself, making it visible to Godzilla Earth. Godzilla Earth awoke and began approaching the City. Once Mechagodzilla City was in view, Godzilla Earth fired his atomic breath, but Galu-Gu was able to disperse a field of Nanometal particles around the City to deflect the blast. Haruo, Belu-Be, and Yuko Tani then took command of three Vultures and assaulted Godzilla Earth in order to lure him to the trap point. Godzilla Earth tried unsuccessfully to shoot down the Vultures with his atomic breath, and was eventually lured to the trap point. The ground beneath Godzilla Earth exploded, and he fell into a deep trench that led right to the capture point just outside of Mechagodzilla City. As he approached, Godzilla Earth swung his tail, knocking debris into Mechagodzilla City and damaging it. Finally, he entered the capture point, and a section of the trench was closed off and flooded with liquid Nanometal. The Nanometal reached up to Godzilla Earth's knees and hardened, trapping him. Mechagodzilla City then opened fire with its cannons, causing Godzilla Earth to deploy his shield. The soldiers in the control room pinpointed when Godzilla Earth's shield collapsed, at which point Mechagodzilla City's cannons flanking Godzilla fired at his dorsal plates, disabling the shield. Two EMP Harpoons were fired into Godzilla Earth's back, and began to discharge electromagnetic energy. As the energy built to critical levels inside of him, Godzilla Earth roared out before slumping forward and falling silent. The United Earth forces believed they had won, but to their shock Godzilla Earth did not explode. Rather, he began glowing red and giving off extremely intense heat which grew hotter by the second. Martin Lazzari theorized that Godzilla Earth was somehow converting the excess electromagnetic energy into heat to prevent himself from exploding. After the heat surpassed 1000 degrees Celsius, Mechagodzilla City's control room became unsafe. The Bilusaludo responded by allowing themselves to be Nanometalized, while Martin and the other humans present were horrified and chose to flee. Galu-Gu was disappointed by the humans' weakness, but believed Haruo was different. The Vultures began Nanometalizing and fusing with their pilots, as Belu-Be claimed the only way they could destroy Godzilla was by flying the Vultures up to the tropopause before plummeting down into him. Being Nanometalized would allow the pilots to survive long enough to successfully strike Godzilla Earth. As the Nanometal began absorbing Haruo, the scales Miana had healed him with repelled it. Yuko tried to resist the Nanometalization and tried to eject, but her Vulture began falling from the sky. Metphies contacted Haruo and warned him that after destroying Godzilla, Mechagodzilla City would continue to proliferate and assimilate the entire planet. Forced to choose between killing Godzilla Earth and saving the woman he loved as well as the planet, Haruo flew his Vulture to Mechagodzilla City's control room. Galu-Gu tried to convince Haruo to go through with the plan, but Haruo claimed that they would stop Godzilla as humans and not machines, then fired the Vulture's cannons at the control room, destroying it and deactivating the Nanometal. Belu-Be's Vulture plummeted onto the control room and exploded, obliterating that entire section of Mechagodzilla City. Godzilla Earth began to stir and charged his electromagnetic energy before unleashing a blast of atomic breath which blew up a large portion of Mechagodzilla City. He followed it with another blast that completely destroyed Mechagodzilla City, ending the threat of Mechagodzilla once and for all.

Mechagodzilla in Ready Player One

Mechagodzilla was a powerful summonable robot in the OASIS, a popular virtual reality game in 2045. It was deployed in the final battle between the forces of Innovative Online Industries (IOI) and the game's other players for control of the OASIS. The company's CEO, Nolan Sorrento, used Mechagodzilla against an RX-78-2 Gundam controlled by Daito and a replica of the Iron Giant controlled by Aech. It was ultimately destroyed, and Sorrento's avatar temporarily killed, when Art3mis threw a grenade into its exposed cockpit.[12]

Video Games

Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!

The Showa Mechagodzilla appears in Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! for the Nintendo Entertainment System, in which it is one of the strongest monsters fought by Godzilla and Mothra, possessing the most health of any monster barring King Ghidorah. It attacks with punches, kicks, and a laser from its eyes. Its attacks are strong so it can prove difficult for Godzilla, but Mothra can beat it easily by flying right under its chin, where none of its attacks can hit her.

Super Godzilla

Mechagodzilla appears as the second boss in the the North American version of Super Godzilla for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Though the Japanese version featured the Heisei Mechagodzilla, the localization team of game designers for Super Godzilla changed the character to the more-familiar Showa Mechagodzilla for the American version, since Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II had not reached America yet. Despite the change in appearance, the boss battle is overall the same fight in both versions, with some minor differences. First, as a reference to the movie it appeared in, the Showa Mechagodzilla first appears disguised as Godzilla, though the disguise disappears after one hit. Other than that, the only gameplay difference is that the Showa Mechagodzilla has its finger missiles in place of the Heisei Mechagodzilla's Mega Buster, which do less damage.

Godzilla: Battle Legends

There are four different incarnations of Mechagodzilla featured in the game Godzilla: Battle Legends for the TurboDuo. Mechagodzilla 1974, referred to as "MGI," appears as an opponent on one of the game's Single Player Mode stages, as does Mechagodzilla 1993. Both Mechagodzilla II and Super Mechagodzilla appear as optional final bosses in the game. All four Mechagodzillas are playable in Versus Mode.

Both the Showa and Heisei Mechagodzillas reappear in the sequel to Godzilla: Battle Legends, Godzilla: Great Monster Battle, on the Super Famicom. The Showa Mechagodzilla is playable in Single Player Mode, while the Heisei Mechagodzilla acts as one of the potential final bosses. Heisei Mechagodzilla and Super Mechagodzilla are playable only in Multiplayer Mode.

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee

The North American GameCube version of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee features a single Mechagodzilla, which is a sort of hybrid between the Showa and Heisei Mechagodzillas, bearing the Heisei version's design but the abilities and story role of the Showa version. For the Japanese release of the game, this Mechagodzilla was replaced by Kiryu from the then-recent Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. When the game was released for the Xbox in North America, both the Heisei Mechagodzilla and Kiryu were included in the game, under the names "Mechagodzilla 2" and "Mechagodzilla 3," respectively.

Godzilla: Domination!

Mechagodzilla is one of the playable monsters in the game Godzilla: Domination! for the Game Boy Advance. In the North American version of the game, Mechagodzilla bears the appearance of the Heisei incarnation, while in the Japanese version it is patterned after Kiryu from Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. However, the differences are only cosmetic, and Mechagodzilla plays identically in both versions. Mechagodzilla has the ability to unleash a flame from its hand in a slow attack with good reach. It also can perform a hydraulic kick, where it unleashes a flame from the jets on its feet for a slow attack with excellent reach. It can also do a claw launch, in which it fires off its fist, which will fly forward and then turn around and return to Mechagodzilla. Its other abilities include the power to fire an electric bolt from its navel area (similar to the plasma grenade), the ability to launch six heat-seeking missiles from compartments located on its back and the ability to create a cooling steam from its chest plates which will slightly heal Mechagodzilla and injure nearby monsters.

Godzilla: Save the Earth

Both Mechagodzilla 2 and Mechagodzilla 3 return in Godzilla: Save the Earth, the sequel to Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, with their movesets largely unchanged.

Godzilla: Unleashed

The Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed features the Showa, Heisei, and Millennium Mechagodzillas as playable monsters. The Showa version, simply referred to as Mechagodzilla, is a member of the Aliens faction, while the Heisei version, known as Mechagodzilla 2, and Kiryu are both part of the Global Defense Force. Mechagodzilla can spew a flamethrower from its nose and create a force field that reflects all projectiles thrown at it. Mechagodzilla 2 is partially a clone of Mechagodzilla, though trading one cell of defense for one cell of speed. The only major differences between Mechagodzilla 1 and 2 is the the latter can hover, fire its plasma cannon and use its jets to push away opponents like King Ghidorah and Mecha-King Ghidorah use their wings aside from flying. In this game, Mechagodzilla and Mechagodzilla 2 are the only monsters who can knock out a health cell with a beam attack. Kiryu is a starter character in this game, and is a considerably more agile and melee-oriented combatant than the other two Mechagodzillas.

Mechagodzilla Bio

Height: 98 meters
Weight: 73,000 tons "Mechagodzilla was the first attempt by the Vortaak to subjugate the human population of the Earth. Plated in space titanium, Mechagodzilla proved to be too well armored for any of Earth's monsters to defeat single-handedly. Unfortunately for the Vortaak, the Earth Defenders are more than willing to work as a team when necessary, and through their combined effort, Mechagodzilla was destroyed. In their latest invasion attempt, the Vortaak have rebuilt Mechagodzilla to fight alongside them once more. With allies of his own on hand, Earth's monsters will need to make full use of their speed advantage when battling this indomitable nemesis."

Mechagodzilla 2 Bio

"Mechagodzilla 2 was directly inspired by the Vortaak's Mechagodzilla. GDF weapons designers saw that a heavily-armored combatant who blended ranged firepower and heavy melee attacks at the cost of some mobility could be a very effective way to hold back monster attacks on major cities. Although they could not duplicate the space titanium alloy used in the original, the GDF was able to create an armor composite which resisted bite and claw attacks to a miraculous degree - as well as absorbing a significant portion of the heat and radiation weapon attacks used by many of Earth's monsters. This focus on defense before offense proved to be a powerful mixture, and Mechagodzilla 2 remains a staple of the GDF's anti-monster force."

Kiryu Bio

Height: 100 meters
Weight: 66,600 tons

"Kiryu is a cyborg monster generated by the Global Defense Force to protect human cities from monster threats. Kiryu is genetically identical to Godzilla, but has been augmented with armor plating, enhanced reflexes, and limited flight capabilities. These enhancements have eliminated his natural ability to create atomic fire, so he has been outfitted with homing rockets, an electrical cannon, and the fearsome Absolute Zero cannon-which can immobilize any monster in a single hit. Kiryu is the GDF's most successful defender yet, and is their first and best option for defending humanity."

Godzilla (PlayStation 3 / PlayStation 4)

Mechagodzilla 2, Super Mechagodzilla, and Kiryu all appear in Godzilla for the PlayStation 3, while the PlayStation 4 version also adds the original 1974 Mechagodzilla. While the Mechagodzillas appear only as enemies in God of Destruction and King of Kaiju Mode in the PS3 version, they are all playable in the PS4 version. Mechagodzilla and Mechagodzilla 2 are playable in the Invade variant of God of Destruction Mode, while Super Mechagodzilla and Kiryu are playable in the Defense variant. For complete movesets of the Mechagodzillas in this game, please refer to the incarnations' individual pages.

City Shrouded in Shadow

In the survival RPG City Shrouded in Shadow developed by Granzella and Bandai Namco for the PlayStation 4, Kiryu is under the control of the JXSDF and sent to battle Godzilla. However, Godzilla's roar causes Kiryu to go berserk and turn against his masters and attack the player, a reference to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.

Comics

Godzilla, King of the Monsters

A third rebuild of the Showa Mechagodzilla was created by the mad scientist Dr. Oniyama, who then also rebuilt Mechani-Kong. He also crafted a false skin and placed it on Mechagodzilla to create a new Fake Godzilla. Oniyama then started following Godzilla using his ship, while Fake Godzilla fired on Godzilla using its Finger Missiles and Fake Atomic Breath, but Godzilla fought back. Godzilla manages to blast off some of Fake Godzilla's skin, revealing Mechagodzilla underneath. Oniyama then made the mecha burn off the rest of its skin, and Mechagodzilla was now ready to continue the fight. Mechagodzilla III, as it was called, and the newly-summoned Mechani-Kong II tag-teamed Godzilla in the Japanese countryside. Mechagodzilla taunted Godzilla under Oniyama's command while Mechani-Kong II held the beast down. Oniyama's Mechagodzilla then brutally skewered Godzilla through the chest using its arms. Godzilla managed to break free, and then grabbed Mechani-Kong II by the arm, suplexing it on top of Mechagodzilla III, breaking its outer casing and causing both of them to short circuit after sinking into a nearby lake.

Godzilla: Legend

Mechagodzilla in Godzilla: Legend

Mechagodzilla was being constructed by a group of Xiliens underneath an unassuming house in the Japanese countryside. It is launched later and fights Godzilla, but is soon defeated.

Kodansha Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II Manga

In this manga adaptation of its debut film by Kodansha Comics, Mechagodzilla appears as the main antagonist. In this adaptation it is noticeably more brutal and powerful, being able to rip Godzilla's dorsal fins in half with little effort. Mechagodzilla also gains several new abilities, including the ability to fire its arms off on a pair of cables from its shoulders at foes. In the first fight against Godzilla, Mechagodzilla overpowers him, tearing his dorsal fins and blasting his eyes with shots of its Mega Buster Ray. However, Godzilla manages to behead Mechagodzilla, and retreats. It is then explained that Mechagodzilla's brutal abilities are related to a remnant of Mecha-King Ghidorah's programming being present in the mecha's computers. In the subsequent battle, Mechagodzilla uses the G-Crusher on Godzilla, but this fails after Fire Rodan revives him. Mechagodzilla is then defeated.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla Manga

In this manga by Shogakukan, Mechagodzilla is rebuilt by G-Force and deployed after the manga's main protagonist, Akira Yuki, steals M.O.G.U.E.R.A. from the U.N.G.C.C.. Mechagodzilla enters battle against its successor, but is quickly destroyed.

Godzilla: Legends

Mechagodzilla in Godzilla: Legends #4

Mechagodzilla is teased at the end of Godzilla: Legends #3, where it is shown that the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens are constructing several Mechagodzillas in preparation for their invasion of Earth.

Mechagodzilla is one of the monsters featured in Godzilla: Legends Issue 4. In this issue, a rookie crew piloting Mechagodzilla is sent to China in pursuit of Godzilla. When they arrive, they find the entire area is totally devastated and enveloped in toxic smog. Mechagodzilla is then attacked by the source of the destruction, Hedorah, the smog monster. Mechagodzilla attempts to attack Hedorah, but all of its attacks seem to be harmlessly absorbed by Hedorah. Suddenly, Godzilla himself arrives and is attacked by Hedorah. Just before Hedorah can seriously harm Godzilla, Mechagodzilla re-enters the battle, forcing the King of the Monsters and his mechanical double to become unlikely allies against the smog monster. After a messy and difficult battle, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla defeat Hedorah and go their separate ways, deciding to resume their conflict another time.

Godzilla: Ongoing

Kiryu appears in Godzilla: Ongoing where he is constructed by billionaire Daniel Malmon to replace the previous Mechagodzilla. Kiryu battles Godzilla and briefly has the upper hand. Kiryu attempts to use his Absolute Zero cannon on Godzilla, but Godzilla counters it with his atomic breath, creating a beam clash which Kiryu loses. With Kiryu damaged and immobile, Godzilla leaves.

Kiryu is later stolen by Harrison, Boxer's estranged son and a member of his "Kaiju Kill Crew" and sent to Monster Island to free the Earth monsters being contained there so that they can battle the space monsters. Kumonga hitches a ride on Kiryu's back while Boxer and Hikari join Harrison in the cockpit, and Kiryu heads to New York to take on Monster X. Monster X easily beats Kiryu and Kumonga before SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla both arrive. During the ensuing battle, Kiryu is knocked into the Hudson River. As Kiryu begins to flood and sink, Boxer manages to get the Absolute Zero cannon operational. Using a well-timed shot, Kiryu freezes SpaceGodzilla, rendering him helpless while Godzilla blasts him and apparently destroys SpaceGodzilla.

Godzilla: The Half-Century War

Mechagodzilla appears in Godzilla: The Half-Century War #3. In this issue, Mechagodzilla has been sent by the Anti-Megalosaurus force to Bombay (Mumbai), India to intercept Godzilla. Meanwhile, Ota Murakami and his team have also arrived in Bombay to find the rogue Dr. Deverich and destroy his monster-transmitter. However, the device attracts a new monster from outer space, SpaceGodzilla. With this new threat, Mechagodzilla is forced to work alongside Godzilla against SpaceGodzilla. Mechagodzilla is severely damaged in the battle, but is able to give Godzilla time to blast SpaceGodzilla's crystals up close and destroy him.

Kiryu appears in The Half-Century War #5, where he is constructed by the Anti-Megalosaurus Force. Kiryu is deployed to Antarctica where the AMF has just completed constructing the Dimension Tide, which they hope will finally stop the space monsters King Ghidorah and Gigan. Godzilla arrives and battles the space monsters, but is badly outmatched. Luckily, Ota Murakami takes command of Kiryu and assists Godzilla in the battle. The AMF activates the Dimension Tide, and the combined efforts of Kiryu and Godzilla manage to banish Gigan and King Ghidorah into a black hole. Before Godzilla can escape, Kiryu stabs him and holds him still. As the black hole tears Kiryu apart, the cockpit is exposed, allowing Murakami to finally see Godzilla face-to-face. Eventually, the force of the black hole destroys Kiryu and apparently sucks Godzilla in as well, though Godzilla's dorsal plates are visible breaking the water in the aftermath of the battle.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

Kiryu appears in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #11, now upgraded to his Modified Type-3 Kiryu design. In this issue, Kiryu was sent to Paris to subdue Baragon. Baragon breathed fire at Kiryu and fought fiercely, but Kiryu was able to overcome and capture Baragon, after which he brought Baragon to the new Monster Islands.

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #12, Kiryu was sent along with a naval fleet to assault the Devonian capital. However, Destoroyah attacked the fleet and killed Kiryu's pilot. Jet Jaguar realized that he was no match for Destoroyah, and decided to shrink to human size and pilot Kiryu. Jet Jaguar used Kiryu's Absolute Zero cannon to freeze Destoroyah, killing him in one hit.

The Mechagodzilla army in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #14

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #13, Rhizon, the leader of the Cryogs, secretly created an army of Mechagodzillas while pretending to be a Russian warmonger named Dyachenko. To test his new creation, Rhizon sent a Mechagodzilla unit disguised as Godzilla to attack Anguirus in Antarctica. In issue #14, the Mechagodzilla badly injured and nearly killed Anguirus. When Godzilla appeared in Boston, a senator enlisted the help of the disguised Rhizon and his army of Mechagodzillas to destroy Godzilla once and for all. In the following issue, Godzilla battled the Mechagodzilla army in downtown Boston. Despite being badly wounded in the ensuing battle, Godzilla managed to destroy most of the Mechagodzillas before being abruptly carried off by Mecha-King Ghidorah. Kiryu was sent to Antarctica to recover the supposed dead body of Anguirus following his battle with the Mechagodzilla. When it was discovered that Anguirus was still alive, Kiryu restrained him and was ordered to fly Anguirus to a secret facility in Russia. On the way there, Kiryu and the jets escorting him were attacked by a group of Mechagodzillas. Kiryu was shot down over Russia while Anguirus escaped to go join Godzilla in battle against Mecha-King Ghidorah and more Mechagodzillas. Godzilla and Anguirus managed to destroy the Mechagodzillas and force Mecha-King Ghidorah to retreat. With his plans foiled, Rhizon and his remaining underlings departed for outer space along with two remaining Mechagodzilla units. When the Cryogs' ship was attacked by SpaceGodzilla, Rhizon sent both Mechagodzillas to fight him off. The Mechagodzillas were frozen by the cold vacuum of space and easily destroyed by SpaceGodzilla.

At the end of the final issue, a single Mechagodzilla was shown being repaired alongside Gigan in an unknown location.

Godzilla in Hell

The remains of Kiryu's arm in Godzilla in Hell #3

During the opening battle between Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla in Rio de Janeiro in Godzilla in Hell #3, what appears to be one of Kiryu's arms can be seen laying under a pile of rubble next to the ruins of M.O.G.U.E.R.A.

Godzilla: Oblivion

Kiryu appeared in the first issue of Godzilla: Oblivion. In this comic, Kiryu was present in an alternate dimension, where he was seen battling a small version of Rodan. Kiryu had the upper hand, until more Rodans appeared and began to give him some trouble.

In the the third issue, after salvaging the metals from the other dimension, Earth scientists used their replicators on them, and used them to build an army of Kiryus in order to fight Godzilla. The Kiryus attacked Godzilla over the open ocean, distracting him while the humans salvaged the carcass of King Ghidorah and revived him as the more powerful Mecha-King Ghidorah. When Godzilla eventually destroyed all of the Kiryus with his atomic breath and claws, he pursued the humans to their base and engaged Mecha-King Ghidorah.
