Monarch[2] is an upcoming television series produced by Legendary Television which will be released to the Apple TV+ streaming service.[1] Set in the continuity of the MonsterVerse between the events of the films Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the series follows members of the titular organization as they encounter Godzilla and other Titans.

Description

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.[4]

Development

The series was announced by Apple on January 20, 2022. Produced by Legendary Television with executive production from co-creators Chris Black and Matt Fraction, Safehouse Pictures, and Toho, it will be set after the events of 2014's Godzilla.[1][4]

Four days later on January 24, Charles Murphy of Murphy's Multiverse reported that the series had been given the title "Hourglass" and was scheduled to begin production that May.[5] This proved true with the release of issue 1286 of Production Weekly on February 17, which revealed the series' title as Monarch as well as confirming its working title Hourglass and planned production period and locations.[2] The publication also revealed additional producers, Chris Black and Matt Fraction's role as writers, and the series' line producer and casting directors.[2] It was followed by issue 1287 of Production Weekly on February 24, which confirmed additional staff as well as the start/wrap dates for the series' British Columbia unit.[3]

The next development came in Production Weekly #1289 on March 10, which pushed back the British Columbia unit's shooting period.[6] On April 14, Production Weekly #1294 reported Matt Shakman as director.[7] Variety specified that he would be directing the first two episodes and executive producing on May 19.[8]

Production

Monarch will film in Vancouver, Tokyo, and Hawaii.[2] The British Columbia unit will shoot between July 6 and December 19.[6]
