|
The Musashi-2 (ムサシ2号 is a nuclear submarine deployed by the Musashi Nigō)Teiyo Group and the JSDF in the 1991 Godzilla film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.
Name
Despite the name "Musashi-2" never being spoken in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, it was decided as early as the film's preparatory draft.[1] In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah Monster Complete Works, published a little over a week before the film's release, the sub is simply called Nuclear Submarine (原子力潜水艦, though "MUSASHI-2" is written beneath it in English. Genshiryoku Sensuikan)[1] The 2009 book Heisei Godzilla Chronicle instead labels it Teiyo Conglomerate Nuclear Sub (帝洋コンツェルン原潜, in reference to Teiyō Kontserun Gensen)Yasuaki Shindo's Teiyo Group.[2] In Fumio Tanaka's Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah novelization, the Musashi-2 was christened the Shindo (神童, which is homophonous with the surname of Yasuaki Shindo. Shindō, lit. Prodigy)
Design
Though Shinji Nishikawa and Kunio Aoi both submitted concept art for the Musashi-2,[2] it was ultimately decided to simply remodel a miniature from The Return of Godzilla.[1]
History
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
After the seemingly successful eradication of Godzilla with the help of the Futurians, Japan found itself terrorized at the hands of the latter's creation: King Ghidorah. With the military helpless, the government scrambled to mutate the Godzillasaurus they believed to be lying lifeless in the Bering Strait by irradiating it with nuclear warheads. Chosen for this "Operation G" was the Teiyo Group's nuclear submarine Musashi-2, which was sent to the bottom of the sea. Theorizing that the Godzillasaurus could still have been irradiated, Futurian defector Emmy Kano and Kenichiro Terasawa discovered that a previous submarine had gone missing near its location. Their theory was confirmed when both satellite thermal images and Miki Saegusa found Godzilla to be alive. Before she and Terasawa could warn the government, however, Godzilla appeared and destroyed the submarine. The material from the submarine further irradiated Godzilla and enabled him to recover completely from the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria, rising out of the ocean once more.
