Sogenbi (そうげん (),   Sōgenbi, lit. Sogen's fire) are flaming head yokai found in Japanese folklore. Several appear in the 1974 television series, Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka.

Name

Sogenbi's name is a combination of Sōgen (叢原 or 宗源), the name of the monk whose head was reincarnated as a Sogenbi in the original folktale, and hi (火), meaning "fire" or "flame." While its name is typically spelled entirely in kanji as 叢原火 or 宗源火, the title of the episode "Evil Spirit Sogenbi" writes it partially in hiragana as そうげん火, though pronounced the same.

Design

Though traditionally depicted as a flaming monk's head, the Sogenbi in Go! Kotaro Ushiwaka simply resemble floating balls of fire. However, when their connection to Coonjo's magic orb was severed in their first appearance, one falls to the ground as a skull.

Abilities

  • Sogenbi are able to float through the air.
  • When attacked, Sogenbi can split apart into more of themselves, as shown when Kotaro attempted to slash one with his naginata.

Weaknesses

In their first appearance, the Sogenbi were seemingly connected to a magic orb wielded by Coonjo. When Kotaro smashed it, the Sogenbi's flames were scorched and they fell to the ground as skulls.
