Rainbowman (レインボーマン,   Reinbōman) is the elemental-powered superhero form assumed by Takeshi Yamato (ヤマト・タケシ,   Yamato Takeshi) in the 1972 Toho tokusatsu series, Warrior of Love Rainbowman and its 1982-83 anime adaptation of the same name by Tsuchida Productions. He is the main protagonist of both series, in which he gains the ability to transform into Rainbowman from the Indian yogi Deva Datta, the previous holder of Rainbowman's power, to battle the Die-Die Gang. In the 1982 series, he can share his power with the giant mecha Rainbow Seven to defend Earth from alien invaders led by Emperor Dongolos.

Design

When in Dash 1 form, Rainbowman wears a yellow suit with yellow gloves and black boots. He has a red belt around his waist and red bands across his chest. He also wears a white necklace around his neck and a yellow mask over his face. On top of the mask he has red sunglasses, and on the top of his head he has a green leafy headdress-like thing. On the headdress is a golden crescent Moon that is facing upwards. Finally, he has a bright yellow scarf around his neck.

When in Dash 2 form, Rainbowman wears an orange suit with brown gloves and boots. He has red bands across his chest and a black belt around his waist that has a large silver buckle. He also has an orange mask and a headdress on his head. It has a white outline and a fiery design coming up from it.

When in Dash 3 form, Rainbowman wears a blue suit with navy blue gloves and boots. He has a black belt around his waist and a "V" symbol on his chest in black. He has a blue mask with black lines going down his nose and cheeks. At the top of his mask he has a black crown-shaped thing that covers his eyes.

When in Dash 4 form, Rainbowman wears a dark green suit with even darker gloves and boots. He has a belt around his waist and leafy shoulder pads, both in the same color as his gloves and boots. On his upper chest, he has a yellow circle that has a smaller orange circle inside of it. He also has a dark green mask with stripes across his cheeks in an even darker green. Finally, he has a leafy headdress that covers his eyes.

When in Dash 5 form, Rainbowman wears a completely gold suit. The only thing on him that isn't gold is the brown belt around his waist. His belt buckle, boots, upper chest, and headdress all resemble an outline of a Glaucus Atlanticus.

When in Dash 6 form, Rainbowman wears a suit that covers his entire body. It is a brown and beige camouflage pattern.

When in Dash 7 form, Rainbowman wears a white suit with blue gloves and boots. He wears a red belt around his waist and red bands across his chest. He also wears a red necklace around his neck and a white mask over his mouth. In the center of his chest is a green circle that has a raised golden four-pointed star on it.

In the remake, Rainbowman's Dashes are more uniform in appearance, with a sleek design with different colored accents on parts of the body, most notably in two tear-like streaks running from each form's eyes. Beyond that, there are few changes between them save for their coloring and the designs on their heads and belts.

Warrior of Love Rainbowman (1972)

Takeshi Yamato in Warrior of Love Rainbowman
"The Miraculous Holy Man"

In 1971, disgraced wrestler Takeshi Yamato's search for the ancient yogi Deva Datta brought him into a warzone between India and East Pakistan, where he ended up on a road three miles from Deva Datta's location. There he was stopped by a military official, who asked to see Takeshi's passport. When taking it from his pocket, a photo of the yogi fell out with it, and when the soldier recognized him, Takeshi tried to get him to take him to the man. The soldier attacked Takeshi for putting his hands on the vehicle, so Takeshi defeated him using the very wrestling move that got him booted from the team. He was allowed to return to the team, but he was advised to seek out Deva Datta for training. After abandoning the jeep he stole from the soldier, he avoided soldiers searching for him in the forest, and happened upon a hiding Indian woman and her child. Takeshi tried to make conversation, but the two remained quiet. On seeing the little girl's injured leg, Takeshi got out alcohol and a cotton pad to clean her wound. This reminded him of his younger sister Miyuki, whose leg had been maimed when she was hit by a car while fetching a ball at Takeshi's behest when they were children. Since then it became a goal of his to save enough up to pay for a procedure to fix her leg. Unfortunately, while cleaning the girl's wound, he was found by soldiers and the miraculous Deva Datta. Excited by finding the man he had been seeking, Takeshi ran toward him, but was shot dead by the soldiers. Datta then revived him, and took him to his home in the mountains where he began training Takeshi, and tasked him with climbing a mountain barehanded. Partway up, Takeshi fell.

"A Destined Encounter"

While seeking the sage Deva Datta, the young wrestling champion Takeshi Yamato was shot down, but was healed by the mystic man, who took him on as his apprentice.

"Go! Warrior of Love"

Takeshi continued his grueling training with the sage Deva Datta for many months, learning physical and mental discipline while trying to connect to the elemental powers. One day, Deva Datta took him to a battlefield strewn with the apparent corpses of soldiers from both sides. With Takeshi watching, Deva Datta chanted over them, and removed the bullet from one of the fallen men's wounds before levitating into the air and cleaning the blood and wounds from all of the soldiers, who arose in confusion before turning on one another again. Deva Datta lectured them about life and violence, giving Takeshi an insight into the life of a Warrior of Love. They continued their training into the winter months until one day during a training match where the yogi attacked him with fire from atop a cyclone, Takeshi was finally able to summon the power of Rainbowman and use Dash Three's water power to extinguish the flames. The wise old man began to fall from the sky, and that night he and told Takeshi about the elemental powers of all seven Dashes and the nature of a Warrior of Love before ascending into the sky and disappearing into a rainbow overhead. With newfound purpose in his mission, Takeshi flies off into the rising sun.

"Fight! Rainbow Seven"

Takeshi returned to Japan at a public airport where he was met by his friend Gota Yamada and his little brother Shosuke, accompanied Takeshi's younger sister Jun. Takeshi apologized to her for being gone so long before going home to his mother's coffee shop, where she was so shocked to see him that she dropped and broke a glass. Takeshi helped to clean up before speaking to his mother and later going on a walk. He saw Jun and Shosuke playing baseball with their friend Hiroshi, whose mother quickly and angrily came to take him home. When they drove away, Takeshi heard her cry out, and ran toward the sound to see her and Hiroshi being attacked by Die-Die Gang soldiers. Transforming into Rainbowman, Takeshi used the water power of Dash Three to summon a wave that washed the assailants away down the nearby river, and later went to visit the boy's father Dr. Toyama, where he noticed that Hiroshi was acting strange. That night, Hiroshi tried to kill his father with a decorative sword from the study wall. Takeshi kept him from harming his father and noticed a Die-Die Gang mind control device on the back of his neck. Takeshi destroyed the device and ran outside to find Fairie Rosé and some soldiers, whom he quickly engaged before calling on Dash Four's power of the wind to turn leaves into sharp projectiles to wound the trespassers before blowing them away in a small cyclone. Just then, Draudas, a Devil Mecha arrived and snatched at Rainbowman before trying to burn him with fire breath. Rainbowman leapt clear and merged into the mech Rainbow Seven, which Dr. Omiya had teleported to his location, and quickly dispatched the mechanized threat before flying away into the night.

"Secret of the Underground Cavern"

When Takeshi spotted Gota chasing down a child who had stolen some fruit, he stopped his friend and invited the boy inside for a meal. He learned that the boy's father had gone missing, and he, Gota, Shosuke, and Jun accompanied the boy into the city to check construction sites for leads to his whereabouts. They split up, and Takeshi spotted Yoko at a nearby bus stop and tried to talk to her, despite her clear and active disinterest. While speaking to her, a gas explosion destroyed the nearby construction site, and Takeshi ran in to search for stranded workers. While doing so, he fell into a crack in the ground and into a mysterious underground tunnel. He followed the tunnel to its end only to find what he believed to be regular sewer work, and climbed a nearby manhole to return to the surface. There, after discovering a computer room destroyed by the explosion near the child's dropped necklace charm near tire tracks in the same mud seen below in the tunnel. Putting together that the children had been kidnapped by the Die-Die Gang, the culprits behind the tunnel and the explosion, he followed the tracks to some prefabricated buildings in the countryside. There he battled and defeated many Die-Die Gang soldiers, and finally the Devil Mecha Gigaidos, with the help of the boy's father after being rescued from the influence of the Seinin Mecha. The group said goodbye to the father and son at a train station, and the boy gave Takeshi his lucky charm, reasoning that it seemed to work for him as well.

Warrior of Love Rainbowman (Weekly Shonen Magazine)

The most popular manga adaptation of the Rainbowman show was published in Weekly Shonen Magazine from October 1972 to October 1973. It was adapted by Tsunehisa Ito with illustrations by Toshiaki Kojima, and was later released in four tankobon volumes, before seeing a two-volume rerelease in 1990. It faithfully adapts the show until after the "Cat's Eye" saga, at which point it tells an original story. It is notable for envisioning Takeshi before his training as much more brutish and violent than the show by playing up the injury inflicted on his opponent, and Takeshi's personal callousness.
