Sagami Bay (相模湾,   Sagami-wan) is a bay along the Pacific coast of Honshu, the largest island in the Japanese archipelago. It is formed by the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture to the east, the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture to the west, the Shōnan coastline to the north, and the island of Izu Ōshima to the south. It has appeared in several forms of media, notably Godzilla movies such as the 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla, the 1972 film Godzilla vs. Gigan, the 2016 film Shin Godzilla, and the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One.

History

Showa era

King Kong vs. Godzilla

King Kong and Godzilla fall into Sagami Bay.

At the climax of Godzilla and King Kong's battle, the two tore up Atami Castle before plunging into Sagami Bay, causing a powerful earthquake. At their battle's end, King Kong surfaced, and the Demon of the South Seas returned to his island home.

Gappa

The two adult Gappas, enraged after their child was stolen, came ashore around Sagami Bay, attacking the city of Atami in their search. The JSDF attempted to halt the two monsters, but were unsuccessful in repelling them.

Godzilla vs. Gigan

After hearing the signal played from one the stolen M Space Hunter Nebula Alien CDs, Godzilla sent Anguirus to investigate it, and the latter swam to Sagami Bay from Monster Island. However, the JSDF intercepted Anguirus, thinking him a threat, and attacked him with Type 70 Maser Cannons and other weaponry. Not seeking a fight, the Famous Partner returned to Monster Island.

Reiwa era

Shin Godzilla

Godzilla comes ashore through Sagami Bay.

Godzilla returned to the ocean after reaching his third form, and the JSDF searched for the monster in Sagami Bay, but were unable to locate him. It was especially noted that Godzilla would be impossible to find should he reside in Sagami Trough. Several days later, Godzilla appeared in Sagami Bay once again, having evolved into his fourth form, and came ashore, slowly advancing through Kamakura.

Godzilla Minus One

The destroyers Hibiki (left) and Yukikaze (right) close in on Godzilla during Operation Wada Tsumi.

Following Godzilla's devastating attack in the Ginza District of Tokyo, a volunteer group was formed to defeat the monster and save Japan. To stop Godzilla, Kenji Noda developed a plan to plunge Godzilla 1500 meters into Sagami Trough rapidly with Freon gas bubbles to reduce his buoyancy, killing the monster with rapid compression; if that failed, then balloons would be used to rapidly reelevate him and harm him with rapid decompression.

Soon after, Godzilla would appear in the bay, forcing the plan to be thrown into play prematurely. As Godzilla made his way inland into Japan, Koichi Shikishima used the Shinden fighter plane to lure the monster back to Sagami Bay and to the trap point. There, as per Kenji Noda's plan, Godzilla was tricked into firing his atomic breath at unmanned vessels that acted as decoys. With Godzilla needing to regenerate his wounds from using this destructive ability, other ships circled the monster and wrapped cables with Freon bubble canisters around him. As Godzilla charged his atomic breath, the Freon canisters were set off, and Godzilla was sent down to the target depth before halting his atomic breath buildup. Then, the balloons were filled to force Godzilla back to the surface; however, Godzilla chewed through the bubbles, and began to fight back against the ship cables that restrained him. The operation was saved when a fleet of tugboats helped pulled Godzilla the rest of the way to the surface.

Godzilla had been gruesomely injured by the plan, but he was still alive, and now he was furious. With a combination of the pain from his injuries and sheer blind rage overtaking him, Godzilla began charging his atomic breath. All hope seemed lost for Noda and the volunteer group, but Shikishima flew the Shinden straight at Godzilla, and ejected just as it crashed into Godzilla's mouth and exploded. The top of Godzilla's head was blasted off, and atomic energy erupted out of cracks in the monsters body as it crumbled to bits and sunk into the ocean. The people celebrated with Godzilla seemingly eliminated and Japan saved.

However, a piece of Godzilla's flesh began to regenerate as it sank into the depths of Sagami Bay.
