Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Showdown in Zanpamisaki: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (残波岬の大決斗 ゴジラ対メカゴジラ,   Zanpamisaki no Daikettō Gojira tai Mekagojira) is an early 1973 draft of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.[1]

History

This early draft for the 14th Godzilla film was adapted from another screenplay entitled Giant Monsters Converge on Okinawa! Showdown in Zanpamisaki, which featured Godzilla, Mothra, and Anguirus battling Garugan, the mechanical vanguard of the Garuga Aliens, in Okinawa. As the concept underwent revisions, Garugan was replaced with a new robot kaiju, one modeled after Godzilla himself. With Garugan replaced by Mechagodzilla, Mothra was dropped from the film entirely and replaced with a new guardian kaiju dubbed King Balgan, or alternatively King Vulcan. Anguirus' role in the film was left unchanged. The villainous Mechagodzilla was also teamed with the alien cyborg kaiju Gigan, who had appeared in each of the two previous Godzilla films, in order to make the final battle more even. This draft underwent further revisions throughout 1973, with Gigan being dropped from the film entirely and Anguirus' role being greatly reduced. King Balgan was also reworked into King Caesar, who performed essentially the same role in the finished film. The "Showdown in Zanpamisaki" line was dropped from the final title, which became simply Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.[1]

Plot

The R Aliens unleash the evil cyborg monster Gigan along with their own creation, Mechagodzilla, in order to conquer the Earth. Godzilla and his ally Anguirus confront the two alien kaiju in Okinawa, and are joined by the legendary Okinawan deity monster King Balgan. Together, the three Earth monsters are able to triumph over the aliens' minions.[1]
