The Smog Factory (公害工場 is a sentient factory created by Kōgai Kōjō)Toho that first appeared in the 1971 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Hedorah.
Name
The factory is not referred to by any specific name in its debut, however merchandise for it created by Cast gives it the name "Smog Factory" (公害工場. This name comes, simply, from the fact that it is a factory which produces smog, tying in to the environmentalist message of the original film. Kōgai Kōjō)
Design
The Smog Factory is a large black-colored building with multiple chimneys and two red eyes with black pupils and irises, as well as two arms with claws on their ends, which Smog Factory uses to grab objects to consume.
History
Showa Series
Godzilla vs. Hedorah
During one of the film's animated segments, the Smog Factory makes an appearance, grabbing up bits and pieces from the environment around it and converting it into smog. Hedorah soon appears and eats the smog being produced, sitting on top of the factory and consuming it whole.
Abilities
Claws
The Smog Factory has two giant mechanical claws, which it uses to grab up plants and other parts of the environment nearby it.
Producing Smog
The Smog Factory creates great quantities of smog, big enough in size that it attracted Hedorah towards it.

- The Smog Factory, the Giant Lizard, the Giant Octopus, the Vampire Plant, Skeleturtle, the Giant Condor, the Giant Sea Serpent, Snowman, Condor, and the Maneater all debuted in the Showa era and have not made an appearance in any other era.
- The Smog Factory is one of the minor Showa kaiju to have a received an official toy, others including the Giant Lizard, the Giant Octopus, Skeleturtle, the Giant Condor and the Giant Sea Serpent.
