SpaceGodzilla (スペースゴジラ Supēsugojira) is a crystalline Godzilla clone kaiju who first appeared in the 1994 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.
SpaceGodzilla is Godzilla's penultimate foe in the Heisei series of films, as well as the only extraterrestrial creature introduced in that series. Boasting an array of psychic powers and energy attacks along with his ability to form and use crystals in various ways, SpaceGodzilla is a challenging opponent, and as a result, shapes the direction of battles which involve him. Spawned by some of Godzilla's cells which were cast into outer space, SpaceGodzilla made his way to Earth with the goal of conquering the planet and eliminating his Earthling counterpart. SpaceGodzilla triumphed in his first battle with Godzilla, even capturing the latter's adopted son in a crystal prison. The evil creature then made his way to Fukuoka and transformed it into his own crystal fortress. G-Force deployed MOGUERA to stop SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla himself soon joined the battle. While SpaceGodzilla was stronger than Godzilla or MOGUERA individually, their combined efforts resulted in the creature's defeat. Despite to date only appearing in a single film, SpaceGodzilla has been featured prominently in other Godzilla media.
Name
SpaceGodzilla's name simply comes from the English word space (スペース supēsu) and Godzilla (ゴジラ Gojira). In English, SpaceGodzilla's name is officially spelled in camelCase, meaning it is written as a single word with the "G" capitalized, in contrast to Mechagodzilla, whose name is spelled as a single word with only the first letter capitalized. However, SpaceGodzilla's name is sometimes spelled as Space Godzilla[8]:16 or Space-Godzilla[8]:89 in official media. SpaceGodzilla's name is abbreviated as Spe-Godzi (スペゴジ Supegoji) once in dialogue in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla as well as in some merchandise,[2] while the book Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla Super Complete Works shortens it to just SG.[8]:60 Before SpaceGodzilla is identified, G-Force refer to him generically as the "Space Monster" (宇宙怪獣 Uchū Kaijū).[9]
In the 1998 LitGodzi merchandise line, SpaceGodzilla is referred to simply as Space (スペース Supēsu). Before the name "SpaceGodzilla" was chosen, the monster was also known as "CrystalGodzilla" (クリスタルゴジラ Kurisutarugojira) in concept art.[1]
The form SpaceGodzilla takes on while traveling through space and strafing Godzilla during their Baas Island battle is called his Flying Mode (飛行形態 Hikō Keitai),[8]:20 or alternatively Flying-type SpaceGodzilla (スペースゴジラ 飛行タイプ Supēsugojira Hikōtaipu).
Development
Very early in the production stages of what would become Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, SpaceGodzilla's role was filled by an alien King Ghidorah named Emperor Ghidorah, which would have been a different individual from the King Ghidorah featured in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and closer in origin to the Showa incarnation.[10] However, Toho decided to create an original monster for the film instead when they became concerned that Emperor Ghidorah would be seen as too similar to Yamata no Orochi from the then-upcoming Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon. SpaceGodzilla's Gravity Tornado ability, which he uses to lift and throw Godzilla in the finished film, is a remnant of one of Emperor Ghidorah's proposed abilities, the power to levitate objects and opponents using his gravity beams.[10][11]
According to an article published in G-FAN #105, a prototype for SpaceGodzilla called AstroGodzilla was featured in an early draft of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. AstroGodzilla's powers were primarily ice-based rather than crystal-based, and he was described as being purely white in color and possessing huge wings. While two origin theories are presented for SpaceGodzilla, AstroGodzilla was said to be spawned specifically by Biollante's cells. AstroGodzilla also had the ability to telepathically control other lifeforms, and would use this power to take control of Miki Saegusa and LittleGodzilla. Eventually, Shinichiro Kobayashi, who had previously written the story for Godzilla vs. Biollante, proposed the idea of a crystalline Godzilla clone. Concept art for this interpretation of the monster included in the book Heisei Godzilla Perfection gives it the name "CrystalGodzilla." Some of these designs were radically different from the final design, featuring wings, additional limbs, and other unique features. Another early concept had the monster transform into imitations of Godzilla's previous foes, as well as a duplicate of Godzilla himself, with his true form being a thin, skull-faced quadrupedal creature. SpaceGodzilla's final design is a modified version of Super Godzilla, the transformation of Godzilla featured in the Super Nintendo game of the same name.[7] Minoru Yoshida designed the concepts for both monsters, originally creating Super Godzilla for the game, but later recycling the look and modifying it into what would eventually become the final design for SpaceGodzilla.

SpaceGodzilla's suit was molded partially from fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), rendering it lighter than the Godzilla suit despite being larger overall. The suit was worn by actor Ryo Hariya, who would go on to play Destoroyah's Perfect Form in the following film. A one-meter prop of SpaceGodzilla's Flying Mode was created in addition to the suit.
Design
SpaceGodzilla looks similar to Godzilla in many ways, but his skin is navy-blue with a patch of dark reddish-purple skin on his abdominal area that appears much smoother than the rest of his skin. He is considerably bulkier than Godzilla and is also 20 meters taller than him. He has two massive white crystals that erupt from his shoulders, and his tail is much longer, ending with several crystal-like spikes. His dorsal fins on his back are made of similar crystals and are white in color. As a result of his build, SpaceGodzilla has difficulty walking and he cannot run, but he makes up for this by having the ability to fly and to levitate. His arms are also extremely thin and short in comparison to the rest of his body, owing to the fact that he rarely uses them directly in favor of his telekinetic abilities. SpaceGodzilla's head is elongated and his mouth area appears similar to Biollante's, as he has sharp teeth and tusks on the sides of his mouth, along with fleshy membranes on the inside of his mouth. He has fire-orange eyes and a crest that goes from orange through yellow.
Personality
SpaceGodzilla is one of the most intelligent of Godzilla's foes in the series, exhibiting displays of planned combat strategy throughout the movie (harvesting power from buildings, trapping Godzilla's son, etc.). This is further evidenced by the fact SpaceGodzilla sought to dominate the Earth of his own free will, instead of other monsters, which only cause random destruction, and whose only involvement in world domination is to carry out their masters' will.
Due to his overly-muscular body, SpaceGodzilla prefers to attack with his corona beam from a distance and was at times overwhelmed by MOGUERA's assault in close quarters. His short and stumpy arms meant that he couldn't reach the mech without using his tail.
Unlike Godzilla, who in the Heisei series of films is depicted as a force of nature, neither good nor evil, SpaceGodzilla appears to have an element of true malice, as the monster was said by the Cosmos to be headed to Earth for the specific purpose of defeating Godzilla. According to the Cosmos, SpaceGodzilla intended to kill Godzilla so that the Earth would be defenseless when he dominated it.
Origins
In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla the human characters hypothesize that Godzilla cells somehow cast into space fell into a black hole and emerged from a white hole, evolving rapidly by assimilating crystalline organisms and being exposed to the energy from exploding stars. It is not known for certain what caused the Godzilla cells to fall into the black hole. Two explanations are provided in the film: either cells from Godzilla's previous clone, Biollante, escaped Earth's orbit when she rose into space after battling Godzilla in 1990, or Mothra unknowingly carried the cells into space on her wings in 1993 as she moved to intercept a meteor headed for Earth. In the 2019 mobile game Godzilla Defense Force, SpaceGodzilla's Codex entry names Mothra as the kaiju responsible.
History
Heisei era
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
SpaceGodzilla was first seen flying through space, where he destroyed a manned NASA satellite. He battled MOGUERA while he was on his way to Earth, defeated the mecha easily, and continued on his way. He landed on Baas Island and attacked LittleGodzilla, but Godzilla arrived to save him. SpaceGodzilla quickly overpowered Godzilla using his telekinetic skills and then trapped LittleGodzilla in crystals. He flew away and flew over Japan, eventually landing and setting up his fortress in Fukuoka. MOGUERA arrived in Fukuoka to battle SpaceGodzilla again but was no match for the monster. Godzilla soon arrived as well and joined forces with MOGUERA. MOGUERA split into Land Moguera and Star Falcon. Land Moguera drilled underground and knocked out the foundations of SpaceGodzilla's power source, the Fukuoka Tower, while Godzilla toppled the tower from ground level. Godzilla then had the upper hand, and MOGUERA used its spiral grenades to destroy SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals, critically weakening him. In retaliation, SpaceGodzilla blasted off one of MOGUERA's arms and proceeded to impale the mecha on his tail and throw it into a nearby building. Akira Yuki tried to pilot the damaged mech back into battle, colliding with SpaceGodzilla and knocking the celestial clone down. However, the damage to the machine made it almost impossible to control, and MOGUERA crashed into several buildings where it became completely disabled. While the space monster struggled to get up, Godzilla blasted him with his red spiral ray multiple times, destroying MOGUERA in the process. SpaceGodzilla let out a weak roar and finally exploded into spores of light that floated back up into space.
Godzilla Island
In Godzilla Island episodes 1-5, Xilien Zagreth attacked Godzilla Island. When Torema attacked her ship, she released SpaceGodzilla to attack. Godzilla roars at his clone. SpaceGodzilla reaches the Command Center and attacks, shooting the Command Center with his ray. Godzilla then arrives and grapples with SpaceGodzilla, neither being able to overpower the other. Torema then tells Godzilla to destroy SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals. Godzilla obeys and fires his atomic ray, blowing up the crystals. Godzilla and Torema's ship fire their rays, and the combined efforts destroy SpaceGodzilla.
After attempting to and failing to possess Godzilla as a ghost, SpaceGodzilla returned to Godzilla Island in a new more powerful physical form called Super Special SpaceGodzilla High Grade Type 2. However, he was defeated in this form again by Godzilla after the Monster King destroyed his left shoulder crystal, and forced to retreat back to outer space.
Abilities
SpaceGodzilla is considered to be one of Godzilla's most powerful foes. In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla was quickly defeated by SpaceGodzilla in their first encounter and required help from MOGUERA to finally overcome him.
Physical strength
While much of SpaceGodzilla's strength is limited due to his size and build, he was able to lift and throw MOGUERA several hundred meters after impaling it with his tail in a technique called the Tail Smasher (テールスマッシャー Tēru Sumasshā)[8][13] or simply Tail smash.[14] He was also able to hold his own against Godzilla for a time while battling him up close.
Durability
SpaceGodzilla endured a tremendous amount of punishment, mostly in the form of beams, from Godzilla and MOGUERA during their confrontation in Fukuoka. The G-cells in his body presumably grant him the same form of accelerated healing as Godzilla. However, he was unable to regenerate his destroyed shoulder crystals, and while a neck wound dealt by MOGUERA's drill vanished shortly after he received it, the lack of blood in subsequent shots suggests its disappearance was a continuity error. In the main continuity of IDW Publishing's Godzilla comics, SpaceGodzilla regenerated and survived after being frozen by Kiryu's Absolute Zero Cannon and subsequently blasted by Godzilla's atomic breath, which initially seemed to kill him.
Photon Reactive Shield
SpaceGodzilla can generate a crystal-like shield at will, called the Photon Reactive Shield (フォトン・リアクティブ・シールド Foton Riakutibu Shīrudo),[8][13] to dissipate or even reflect energy beams, although he only used this ability to deflect Godzilla's atomic breath. SpaceGodzilla used this shield both to protect himself and defend the Fukuoka Tower when Godzilla tried to attack it.
Corona Beam
SpaceGodzilla is able to fire an energy beam from his mouth and shoulder crystals called the Corona Beam (コロナビーム Korona Bīmu).[8][13] The beam is yellowish-orange in color and lightning-like in appearance with a bluish-white curved tip on the front end shaped like a dagger or scorpion's stinger to stab and dig into armored targets before exploding. He appears able to control the direction and movements of these energy beams, possibly through his telekinesis, allowing them to hit his target in various ways, even bypassing potential defenses. The beam is able to visibly injure Godzilla, even knocking him to the ground in one instance, and later is used to sever one of MOGUERA's arms. In Godzilla Island, SpaceGodzilla's beam attack appears more like a red-colored version of Godzilla's atomic breath.
Intelligence
In addition to being physically powerful, SpaceGodzilla also demonstrates a high degree of intelligence and strategy. Upon arriving on Earth, SpaceGodzilla immediately went after Godzilla, as he saw him as the biggest threat within his path to ensure his dominance on the planet. SpaceGodzilla first arrived on Baas Island and attacked LittleGodzilla so as to draw out Godzilla himself.
SpaceGodzilla began setting up crystal-like structures around Fukuoka in order to provide and enhance his own power as well as fend off Godzilla. Aware that he was at a disadvantage in close combat, SpaceGodzilla used his telekinesis and corona beams to keep both Godzilla and MOGUERA at a distance and shifted his attention to MOGUERA when he realized it was a bigger threat than Godzilla. SpaceGodzilla also placed an energy shield around the Fukuoka Tower, which he was using as an energy source after Godzilla had begun trying to destroy it.
In both the manga adaptation of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and in the video game Godzilla: Save the Earth, SpaceGodzilla is able to use his smaller crystals as an improvised melee bat-like weapon. In the manga specifically, he uses a crystal to parry and deflect Godzilla's atomic breath.
Flight
In his flying form, SpaceGodzilla is capable of flying at Mach 3 in Earth's atmosphere, though he can reach close to the speed of light in outer space.[8][7] He is still able to use his other abilities, such as his Corona Beam, while in this form.
Gravity Tornado
SpaceGodzilla possesses a form of telekinesis, called Gravity Tornado[6] or Gravi-Tornado[14] (グラビ・トルネード Gurabi Torunēdo),[8][13] allowing him to float or transport other kaiju through the air. Though he cannot move his targets with great speed, Godzilla was completely unable to break free of his psychic grip. He also lifted a number of crystal spires into the air and hurled them at Godzilla.
Geokinesis
SpaceGodzilla can control the ground around him by creating massive towering crystals. He is able to raise them up from the ground to use a means of defending himself or attacking his foes. He also appears able to form these crystals out of thin air as well, as he encases himself in a mass of crystals while in his flying form. SpaceGodzilla is also able to combine this power with his energy manipulation in order to use the crystals to attack his foes with energy beams and small crystal shards, as well as provide him with a source of energy and an increase in attack power. In the Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla manga adaptation, SpaceGodzilla spreads these crystals by exhaling a stream of crystalline spores.
Energy manipulation
SpaceGodzilla is able to manipulate energy at will. He can control the direction and flight path of his corona beams to allow for multi-directional attacks. He is able to conduct energy through touch, an ability referred to as Space Claw (スペース・クロー Supēsu Kurō),[8] allowing him to stand a better chance when facing a foe in close combat. He can absorb energy from nearby sources as well and combine this power with his geokinesis to maximize his energy as well as create giant crystal structures which he can throw at his foes. He also produces an aura that can cause electrical disturbances, as demonstrated against MOGUERA in their first fight. In Godzilla Island SpaceGodzilla's ghost form has the ability to absorb spiritual energy from other beings as well.

Homing Ghost
With an ability known as Homing Ghost (ホーミングゴースト Hōmingu Gōsuto),[8][13] SpaceGodzilla can raise crystals into the air and propel them at an opponent or have them fall to the ground, like rain. Their quantity makes them hard to dodge, though they travel at a slow pace. In the PlayStation 3 and 4 Godzilla game, SpaceGodzilla can create Homing Ghosts out of thin air, though only while the Crystal Field is present.
Photon Hurricane
While in his flying form, SpaceGodzilla can emit a ring-shaped electromagnetic wave called a Photon Hurricane (フォトンハリケーン Foton Harikēn),[8][13] which disrupts electrical instruments. He used this attack on MOGUERA, along with his corona beam, to make it incapable of fighting him while he was flying toward Earth.
Aura
In Godzilla Unleashed, SpaceGodzilla can release an aura while momentarily levitating off the ground. The description of the ability claims this aura is an EMP blast, which causes heat-seeking weapons or other military attacks to not work for the duration of the ability, although this does not actually occur in the game.
Telekinetic shove
In Godzilla: Save the Earth, SpaceGodzilla can use his telekinesis to push out in all directions while hovering, creating a large shockwave that sends most kaiju flying.
Weaknesses
SpaceGodzilla is heavily disadvantaged in melee combat due to his heavy build and comparatively short arms. When engaging MOGUERA at close range, SpaceGodzilla's skin was pierced by the mech's drill nose. MOGUERA's spiral grenade missiles were able to destroy SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals, drastically weakening his power. Destroying his planted crystals will also weaken the monster by cutting off his energy supply. SpaceGodzilla was eventually destroyed by multiple hits from Godzilla's red spiral heat beam.

SpaceGodzilla appears in the Atari/Pipeworks games Godzilla: Save the Earth, for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox and Godzilla: Unleashed for the Wii and PlayStation 2, and also Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash for the Nintendo DS. One of the last hidden monsters unlockable, SpaceGodzilla is a very strong weaponry-oriented combatant. Able to call up crystal towers to speed his energy recharge rate (which otherwise recharges very slowly), SpaceGodzilla can use a variety of energy and missile-based attacks, from crystal shards, slamming his foe with a large chunk of crystal, making the towers fire energy bolts at the foe to his powerful Corona Beam. SpaceGodzilla also uses energy in many of his melee attacks, and especially in his grabs and throws, levitating opponents and buildings into the air, emanating an electromagnetic aura that will disrupt attacks by the military and flinging them with his mind. He also has an exceptionally long tail which can be used effectively as a whip. SpaceGodzilla is as tough defensively as Destoroyah, making him a powerful and difficult monster to defeat. He replaces Orga as the final opponent in Hard mode. He also is in Godzilla Unleashed as a member of the Mutants faction and final boss stage for the Earth Defenders, Aliens, and G.D.F. The role that he plays in the storyline varies from the PS2 and the Wii version. In the PlayStation 2 version, he's responsible for the crystals appearing on earth, while in the Wii version he's merely trying to use them to escape, though some believe that he managed to release them via the portal shown in the Alien version of the storyline. It is most likely that in both the PS2 and Wii versions of Godzilla: Unleashed, SpaceGodzilla is the cause of the crystal incursion. Even if the player doesn't select him in story mode in the Wii Version, SpaceGodzilla will be shown roaring in triumph in the mutants ending, but this only happens on the PS2 if the player selects him. He is the leader of the mutant faction and the main antagonist of the game. The crystals he creates are responsible for the birth of the monsters Obsidius and Krystalak, and in Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash for bringing The Sphinx to life.

SpaceGodzilla appeared in the PlayStation 4 release of Godzilla as a playable character. In the game's introductory cutscene, SpaceGodzilla can briefly be seen fighting King Ghidorah.[17]

Godzilla Battle Line
SpaceGodzilla is a four-star Battle Piece that can be a unit or a Leader, requiring 6 energy to summon to the battlefield as the former.
- As a unit
SpaceGodzilla utilizes the Corona Beam to hit ground and/or aerial enemy units. SpaceGodzilla will repeatedly summon two crystals to the field that will increase the attack of allied units and himself by 25% for five seconds as long as he stays on the field. These crystals will also distract enemy units, and each will remain on the field for 45 seconds (unless destroyed first). He has a base movement speed of 12, a long reach, a wide search range, and attacks every 2.6 seconds. [18]
- As a Leader
SpaceGodzilla's special move, the Photon Field, requires 2 energy to be performed. He will summon six crystals on the field, distracing enemy units and the Leader. These crystals will increase the damage dealt by allied units near them by 20%. As a Leader, he has a super long reach, a wide search range, and attacks every 2.2 seconds.[18]

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters
SpaceGodzilla appeared in the last issue of Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, where he was seen looking at Earth with sinister intent.
Godzilla
SpaceGodzilla invaded Earth alongside fellow space monsters Hedorah, Gigan and Monster X. While attacking London, he came under attack by Titanosaurus and Battra. After a brief fight, SpaceGodzilla managed to dispatch them both before heading up New York City to back up Monster X against Godzilla and Kiryu. During the fight, SpaceGodzilla, a heavily damaged Kiryu, and Godzilla were knocked into the Hudson River by a shockwave from Monster X. While Kiryu rapidly began sinking, the crew members (Boxer, Harrison, and Asuka) managed to fire the Absolute Zero Cannon at SpaceGodzilla, rendering him helpless before Godzilla obliterated the crystals on his back, seemingly killing him.

Godzilla: The Half-Century War
SpaceGodzilla was summoned to Bombay, India in 1987 by Dr. Deverich's psionic beacon. He fought Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, severely damaging the latter while almost killing the former. During the battle, Ota Murakami managed to get Mechagodzilla back online and destroy the crystals that SpaceGodzilla used as his power supply, allowing Godzilla to finish him off with his atomic breath.
Godzilla: Rulers of Earth
At a megazoology conference in Honolulu, Dr. Kenji Ando gave a presentation which included a slideshow of the last known whereabouts of various kaiju. One of the pictured kaiju was SpaceGodzilla, who was photographed leaving Earth's atmosphere in his Flying Mode, presumably shortly after recovering from his earlier battle with Godzilla and Kiryu in New York. Ando jokingly asked if "SpaceGodzilla" was really the best name for the creature. SpaceGodzilla was later detected by the Cryog aliens while flying toward Earth. As SpaceGodzilla continued on a collision course with the ship, the Cryogs deployed two Mechagodzillas to fight him off. The cold vacuum of outer space froze the Mechagodzillas before SpaceGodzilla quickly destroyed them both. The Cryogs then sent the modified Gigan into battle. SpaceGodzilla used his crystal-manipulating powers to shred Gigan's sails and removed his arm in the battle. His enemies defeated, SpaceGodzilla headed to Earth, sending crystal meteorites ahead of himself.
After entering Earth's atmosphere, SpaceGodzilla was attacked by several Trilopods, which dragged him to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, a Trilopod that had absorbed Megaguirus' characteristics brought Godzilla to the same location. One of the Trilopods absorbed some of SpaceGodzilla's characteristics and proceeded to trap both Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla inside a crystal prison. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla both realized they needed to work together in order to survive, and broke free of the prison. Together, SpaceGodzilla and his terrestrial counterpart managed to destroy the SpaceGodzilla-Trilopod hybrid and the other Trilopods accompanying it. Once Godzilla collapsed from exhaustion after the battle, SpaceGodzilla was overcome by his hatred for him and proceeded to kick the unconscious Godzilla repeatedly and prepared to blast him with his corona beam. However, anticipating the arrival of more Trilopods, SpaceGodzilla roared hatefully in Godzilla's face, then left him on the ground and retreated back to space.
Godzilla in Hell
SpaceGodzilla appeared in the third issue of the miniseries Godzilla in Hell through a flashback. Having destroyed the moon en-route to Earth, SpaceGodzilla proceeded to duel Godzilla amongst the ruins of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla fired their beams at each other, causing an explosion that destroyed the entire planet, killing them both and sending Godzilla to Purgatory. When Godzilla rejected the call of God's angels to join their cause of peace, he was cast into Hell and encountered SpaceGodzilla again, who had enlisted a legion of demons to fight alongside him. The demons tried to take over Godzilla's body during the battle, but Godzilla destroyed the legion and defeated SpaceGodzilla for good.

Roar
Like most other Heisei monsters, SpaceGodzilla's roar is made of recycled sounds, but unlike most other Heisei monsters, instead of the usual Rodan roars heard from Godzillasaurus, King Ghidorah, Mecha-King Ghidorah and Battra, Toho took Gigan's roar and pitched it down to make SpaceGodzilla's roar. In Godzilla Generations: Maximum Impact, SpaceGodzilla's roar is an altered Heisei Godzilla roar. He is given a new set of roars in addition to his original roar in the Godzilla video games developed by Pipeworks.
SpaceGodzilla's roar would later be reused by The Gransazers mech Daisazer.

- SpaceGodzilla's flying form weighs a massive 720,000 metric tons,[note 1] making SpaceGodzilla the heaviest known monster in the entire Godzilla franchise.
- SpaceGodzilla is the only monster in the Godzilla series to have two official origin theories put forth in the same film. Other monsters have had multiple origins throughout their film appearances, but are restricted only to a single origin in each continuity.
- SpaceGodzilla has many characteristics similar to Biollante, including a screeching roar, a pair of tusks on each side of his mouth, a flap of skin in the corners of his mouth, and an ability to cause electrical disturbances. At the end of the film, SpaceGodzilla's glowing "essence" escaped from his body and flew into space, much like Biollante did herself five years earlier. These uncanny similarities make Biollante a more likely candidate than Mothra for creating SpaceGodzilla.
- A Space Godzilla was the title of an illustrated short story based on an unmade Godzilla film considered after Terror of Mechagodzilla. It revolved around several alien "Space Godzillas," which hailed from Godzilla Planet. Aside from the name, this story and SpaceGodzilla are completely unconnected.
- Early versions of the script for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla called for SpaceGodzilla to face Godzilla and a second Mechagodzilla, a plan scrapped when it was realized that against the combined might of Godzilla and the machine which nearly killed him in the previous year would make the battle too one-sided. Instead, the less-powerful Moguera was revived and updated for this purpose, although Godzilla: The Half-Century War seems to pay homage to this idea in issue #4.
- SpaceGodzilla was part of the mutants faction in Godzilla: Unleashed. At first glance, it might have made more sense for SpaceGodzilla to have been in the Aliens faction, seeing as his origins are from space. However, all of the alien monsters in the game were controlled by the Vortaak, and SpaceGodzilla was acting on his own free will during the events of the game.
- SpaceGodzilla's electromagnetic aura seems to act like an electromagnetic pinch, jamming electronics by getting their signals crossed or entangled with other electronics. After his defeat, news satellites were able to resume receiving live feeds from cameras on location in the area.
- SpaceGodzilla battled Godzilla in a Hero Fest '96 stage show which also included appearances by characters from the Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai franchises.[19]
- Yosuke Nakano, who worked as the assistant special effects director under Koichi Kawakita for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, was an outspoken fan of SpaceGodzilla and proposed and created storyboards for a potential direct sequel to the film with SpaceGodzilla returning as the villain. While Toho did not further develop Nakano's Terror of SpaceGodzilla proposal, Nakano expressed his hope for the character to appear in a future film.
- In reference to SpaceGodzilla's corona beam attack, Wizards of the Coast printed a card called "Spacegodzilla, Death Corona" for its Magic: The Gathering set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths just prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 2, 2020, the day they officially announced the set, Wizards also released a statement that future printings of the card would be renamed "Spacegodzilla, Void Invader."[20]
