Spyler (スパイラー,   Supairā) is a kaiju created by Toho that appeared in episode 4 of the 1973 tokusatsu kaiju series Zone Fighter, titled "Invasion! Garoga's Grand Army: Godzilla Appears."

Design

Spyler resembles a heavily altered theropod dinosaur. He has long, bulky legs which are covered in bulbous scales and bumps, and he also has orange-brown circles on the front of his torso. His head and neck are bright orange, and he has luminescent blue eyes with what appear to be bolts underneath them. His back is covered in tuberous spines and two curved, connected spikes which resemble a crescent moon. He has two antenna and a bent spike emerging from his forehead. Spyler has large claws for hands, and two-toed feet.

History

Zone Fighter

"Invasion! Garoga's Grand Army: Godzilla Appears"

The Silver Garoga disguised as Hotaru's childhood friend Sachio transformed into Spyler during Zone Fighter's fight with Wargilgar. The two monsters overwhelmed the hero until Godzilla arrived to his aid. In the ensuing battle, the King of the Monsters ripped off Spyler's crescent-shaped spike and Zone Fighter finished him off with a Meteor Proton Beam.

"The Terror-Beast Base: Invade the Earth!"

Spyler appears via flashback as the Garogas contemplate the many defeats they have suffered at the hands of Zone Fighter. The two battle surrounded by pink mist, with Spyler offering no resistance as Zone Fighter pummels him.

Abilities

Claws

Spyler has claws perfect for bashing opponents. When first coming to Wargilgar's aid, Spyler successfully knocked Zone Fighter over with them. The Terror-Beasts then took turns bashing the Meteor Man back and forth with their forelimbs, grabbed his arms, and tossed him onto the ground, where he struggled to get back up. Spyler continued his assault on Zone Fighter with Wargilgar until Godzilla came charging in.

Killer Laser Beams

Spyler can emit blinding flashes from the ten orange knobs on his torso, which release smoke after each use. These lights were able to temporarily stun and disorientate Zone Fighter allowing Spyler to gain an advantage over the hero. According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), this attack is called the Killer Laser Beams (殺人レーザー光線,   Satsujin Reza Kosen), and the structures on his chest also emit radiation referred to as Atomic Blasts.[3]

Durability

Although Godzilla was able to remove the crescent-shaped spike on his back with relative ease, he was able to continue the fight with no apparent pain. Spyler barely survived a volley of Zone Fighter's Meteor Missile Might, then was blown to pieces by his Meteor Proton Beam immediately afterwards.

Trivia

  • Spyler bears a slight resemblance to the Ultraman Ace Terrible-Monster Vakishim, while the spikes on his back also gives him a similarity to another Terrible-Monster from the same series, Verokron.
  • Spyler is the second kaiju to survive the Meteor Missile Might attack, but the first to be killed by the Meteor Proton Beam.
  • According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), Wargilgar was under Spyler's control.[3] This is supported by the episode itself, where the disguised Garoga who was controlling Wargilgar turns into Spyler after a fight with Zone Angel and Zone Junior.
