The Sub-Zero Manta (バード・オブ・プレイ,   Bādo · Obu · Purei, lit. Bird-of-Prey) is a giant mutant manta ray monster created by TriStar Pictures that first appeared in the Godzilla: The Series episode "Wedding Bells Blew".

The Sub-Zero Manta resembles a large, tan manta ray. Its has four large grey wings, a broad red mouth, four beady red eyes, bird-like legs, and a spiked tail. Multiple gill slits line its back.

A one-of-a-kind mutation, this oversized manta ray was gifted with flight and a lethal ice breath after being born. It’s theorized it once lived in the Arctic, somehow lost its course and found itself in New Jersey, where it tried to find a new, more suitable habitat. Its first choice was at a local aquarium, specifically the penguin exhibit, before moving on to a frozen food packaging plant where H.E.A.T. was called in. Godzilla quickly drew battle and the two clashed before the humans realized what the ray was after. With Godzilla following also, they lured the creature into an ice rink, where it quickly went into hibernation.

Major Hicks was then called in to help transport the mutant, but before any arrangements could be made, the generator died out and the temperature rose, awakening the Sub-Zero Manta. It burst forth from the roof and as the ground forces fired at it, it unleashed its ice breath again, freezing all of them except Hicks.

Godzilla again challenged it and unleashed his atomic breath just as it did its ice mist. The heat and cold met and locked, quickly generating a large thunderstorm. As Elsie’s sister Kate’s nearby wedding was evacuated, the two moved out to sea, where Godzilla’s head was frozen by the mutation. The creature attacked the Heat-Seeker again before Godzilla launched himself out of the water, free of the ice, and dragged the monster down.

The two tussled again, until Godzilla began to swim in circles faster and faster. The kaiju formed a powerful whirlpool that quickly dragged the Sub-Zero Manta down, never to be seen or heard from again.

Unusual for a manta ray, the Sub-Zero Manta could fly by using its fins like wings. Even stranger is the fact that it has clawed legs for walking.

Ice breath

The Sub-Zero Manta could unleash an ice blast which could freeze an entire battalion of tanks and Godzilla's upper body portion in one strike. Its ice breath was capable of beam-locking with Godzilla's atomic breath.

  • The episode that the Sub-Zero Manta appeared in was originally supposed to feature a giant bird instead. When the writers learned that other episodes were going to have giant birds in them, they changed it to a giant manta ray. The Sub-Zero-Manta's Japanese name, "Bird-of-Prey," seems to reflect this.
