— Commander Aso after seeing the wreckage of Mecha-King Ghidorah (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II)

Takaaki Aso (麻生 孝昭,   Asō Takaaki) is the commander of G-Force throughout the films Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

Formerly a colonel in the JSDF, Aso was appointed as the head of the United Nations' international anti-Godzilla military branch, G-Force. He was in charge of overseeing the Mechagodzilla project in 1994 and Project M in 1995. Driven by his desire to defeat Godzilla, Aso was ruthless in pursuing this goal. He was ultimately faced with the dilemma of being unable to attack Godzilla in 1996 when it became apparent doing so would cause a catastrophic explosion. Aso relied instead on the JSDF and G-Force's advanced freezer weapons to do the job. He witnessed Godzilla's eventual death after defeating Destoroyah, but showed no joy for this occasion.

Personality

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Aso is introduced as stern and ruthless, reluctant to admit defeat and not above showing his temper. He proceeds with a plan to use BabyGodzilla as bait despite a general air of disgust amongst his colleagues and orders Miki Saegusa to locate and eliminate Godzilla's secondary brain despite her moral conflict. By the events of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Commander Aso’s character has softened, revealing a measured and philosophical side. He responds diplomatically when MOGUERA is reassigned to attack SpaceGodzilla instead of Godzilla. He is also forgiving of soldier Akira Yuki's erratic behavior, and it is revealed that he was once Yuki's superior officer. When MOGUERA is finally destroyed, Commander Aso’s immediate concern is for the fate of its pilot, Akira Yuki.

In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Aso struggles with orders not to attack Godzilla, as doing so could cause an explosion. Impressed by LittleGodzilla's transformation into an adult Godzilla, it is Commander Aso who names him Godzilla Junior. Throughout the battle between Godzilla and Destoroyah in Tokyo, he is concerned for the safety of missing psychics Miki Saegusa and Meru Ozawa. Following Godzilla's death, Commander Aso expresses no joy; along with his colleagues, he is quietly aggrieved.

History

Heisei era

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Commander Aso was present when G-Force salvaged the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah, remarking that they finally had a weapon to defeat Godzilla. Aso oversaw Mechagodzilla's first action against Godzilla, confidently remarking that Godzilla was at their mercy as Mechagodzilla could return his atomic breath. When Mechagodzilla began short-circuiting and became immobilized, Aso angrily told the machine to move, but Dr. Leo Asimov reminded him that it was impossible for it to fight in its current condition. Aso angrily remarked "son of a bitch!" when he accepted that Mechagodzilla had lost the fight.

Aso headed a meeting of G-Force where he revealed that BabyGodzilla was found to possess a secondary brain in his hip which controlled motor function in his lower body. As Godzilla was of the same species, it stood to reason that Godzilla possessed the same structure. He proposed a new plan, codenamed "G-Crusher." Baby would be used as bait to lure Godzilla to the Ogasawara Islands, where Mechagodzilla would target his secondary brain and cripple him, then finish him off. Miki Saegusa objected to using Baby as bait, but Aso told her she would be coming along on the mission and would be able to watch over the infant. He explained that Miki's psychic powers were needed to successfully target Godzilla's secondary brain. Aso oversaw this mission from G-Force headquarters in Tokyo, which went awry when Fire Rodan abducted the canister holding BabyGodzilla and Azusa Gojo and landed at Makuhari Bay. Mechagodzilla and the Garuda were deployed to stop Rodan and save the container, but after Rodan was defeated Godzilla arrived. Aso watched as Mechagodzilla fought Godzilla and eventually combined with the Garuda to form Super Mechagodzilla. Super Mechagodzilla executed the G-Crusher plan and nearly killed Godzilla before Rodan intervened and revived Godzilla with his energy. Aso watched helplessly as Godzilla obliterated Mechagodzilla in his powered-up state.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

Commander Aso was concerned when G-Force elected to use MOGUERA to intercept the space monster rather than use it to fight Godzilla, but was informed that Project T was intended for Godzilla. He later personally asked his former subordinate Akira Yuki to pilot MOGUERA against SpaceGodzilla. He insisted that he only asked as Yuki was the only one who could do this. Yuki remarked that "too many stupid meetings" could change a man, as Aso in his opinion didn't look great like he did when he was his superior officer. Yuki did accept, but was nowhere to be found when the time came to launch MOGUERA. Aso told Colonel Iwao Hyodo to find Yuki, but when he still couldn't be found Aso was forced to go with a backup crew. Just as Aso briefed the pilots, Yuki arrived with Koji Shinjo and Kiyoshi Sato. Aso handed over command of MOGUERA to them, informing them that the space monster had landed in Fukuoka. Aso watched from G-Force headquarters as MOGUERA took on SpaceGodzilla and was joined in the battle by Godzilla. When SpaceGodzilla was finally defeated and exploded along with MOGUERA, Aso expressed concern for Yuki, who had managed to escape the explosion.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

Commander Aso was in disbelief when he was informed that they could no longer attack Godzilla or risk setting off an explosion that would destroy the world. He eventually revealed the existence of advanced freezer weapons in the JSDF's arsenal, including those mounted on the Super X3, piloted by one of their best pilots, Sho Kuroki. He oversaw the mission as the Super X3 engaged Godzilla in the Bungo Channel and successfully froze him. He waited several hours until after Godzilla should have unfrozen, then saw that readings of Godzilla showed his teperature and fission falling. Aso believed their mission had been a success. When Godzilla's adopted son resurfaced at Omae Cove, now grown into a sub-adult, Aso remarked that he was no longer a baby but a full-fledged Godzilla, giving him the name Godzilla Junior. He and G-Force were later informed that Godzilla's heart, his internal nuclear reactor, was falling apart and that now Godzilla would melt down, destroying the planet with himself. Kenkichi Yamane told Aso that their best option was to make the new monster Destoroyah, spawned by the Oxygen Destroyer which killed the original Godzilla, fight Godzilla and hope it killed him. It was decided to lure Godzilla Junior to Destoroyah in Tokyo as Godzilla was sure to follow. Aso watched this operation unfold, with Junior managing to defeat Destoroyah. Dr. Kensaku Ijuin then informed G-Force that they had one final option: freeze Godzilla as he melted down to minimize the damage. However, Destoroyah returned in its demonic Perfect Form and killed Godzilla Junior as he reunited with Godzilla at Haneda Airport, then destroyed Miki Saegusa and Meru Ozawa's chopper. Aso was concerned for the safety of the two psychics, but fortunately they were rescued by Yukari Yamane's news chopper. G-Force opened fire on Destoroyah with its freezer weapons as the evil beast tried to escape, shooting it down and causing it to explode as it collided with the superheated ground. As Godzilla began to melt down, G-Force opened fire with all of its available freezer weapons, successfully stopping Godzilla's meltdown from destroying the Earth. Aso watched Godzilla's death silently, showing no joy for the demmise of his nemesis. Just as it appeared Godzilla was gone for good and that Tokyo would be rendered uninhabitable from the radiation he released, Godzilla Junior appeared among the smoke, having absorbed the energy to mature into a new Godzilla.
