Relevant novelization excerpts

Excerpts and stats from the Godzilla: The Novelization~ lots of fun! The Novelization (which is more trustworthy) directly contradicts several stats found in The Official Godzilla Movie Fact Book, namely Godzilla's tail being 256 feet long (novelization says it's 200 ft.)...

It's a goddamn lizard.

"Oh, that's beautiful. A little closer, baby," he whispered to the gigantic reptile, coaxing him closer.

Just a quick disclaimer, there are 2 different versions of the novelization... a small paperback and a larger hardcover. The Hardcover has different page #s from the paperback because the format is different. I used the paperback novel for these.

"Instead I'm going to do my best to stick to the facts and tell you the story of what happened during that rain-drenched week in early summer when I went nose to nose with a five-hundred-ton lizard who stood taller than the Statue of Liberty." (p. 3)

Godzilla is longer than the Statue of Liberty (305 ft. / 92.964 meters) ~ this is his minimum length. Often approximated to simply 90 meter length in publications.

"The next time they heard it, the sound was more distinct: a ground-rattling thud accompanied by the sharp crack of concrete breaking apart under five hundred tons of weight." (p. 74)

"Including his tail, he stretched out to well over three hundred feet." (p. 81)

"Held parallel to the ground, the tail was two hundred feet long and armored with rows of serrated bone along the top or dorsal edge." (p. 78)

"Let me see if I've got this straight. A two-hundred foot tall radioactive mutant lizard swims halfway across the globe and comes to Manhattan because it wants—fish?" (p. 115)

"If you hadn't known we were trying to lure a two-hundred-foot-tall ichthyophagous lizard into the intersection, you would have thought we were crazy." (p. 125)

"I estimated the creature to be ninety feet wide at the haunches and just over a hundred and eighty feet tall—even in his forward-crouching posture. Stretched head to tail, it would have been longer than a football field!" (p. 130)

"Whether it was a wild gun battle between cops and bank robbers or a twenty-story-tall creature marching directly toward him, Animal felt safe as long as the camera was rolling." (p. 82)

"After analyzing all the relevant evidence, Dr. Chapman puts the creature's top speed at between three and five hundred miles per hour!" (p. 140)

The Official Godzilla Movie Fact Book only says that his speed is 300 MPH.

"Jagged scales, like the protective dorsal shields of a stegosaurus, ran up the creature's back. The two that erupted behind the shoulder blades were especially large, over twenty feet each." (p. 81)

That's about it for now. Titanollante ( roar to me! | my footprints! ) 04:59, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Calculations

Here's a couple of size calculations using the film's CGI model for Godzilla that I made.

I think that these are both consistent with what the novel claims, no? :P

That actually matches up the evidence to a T. Godzilla is said to be "taller [longer] than the Statue of Liberty" (over 92 meters) and his tail is said to be 200 feet... Looks like they actually properly calculated G98's length and tail length. The standing is off though... Titanollante ( roar to me! | my footprints! ) 05:38, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
