History

Monsterverse

Godzilla (2014)

Several Ticonderoga-class cruisers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers were anchored near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as Godzilla and the MUTOs converged on the city. Godzilla surfaces beneath three of the cruisers, prompting two of them to open fire, touching off a battle that led to him crashing through the Bridge.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Several Ticonderoga-class cruisers engaging Godzilla

Several ships of this class were part of a convoy escorting Kong to the Hollow Earth entrance in Antarctica. When Godzilla targeted them in the Tasmian Sea, the ships engaged the Titan, his tail splitting one in half. After Kong was freed from his restraints, the ape Titan used another one of these ships as a makeshift stepping stone to reach a nearby aircraft carrier. Another cruiser dropped the depth charges that broke Godzilla's tail grip on Kong. The surviving ships powered down on Nathan Lind's recommendation, playing dead so Godzilla would believe he won the engagement.

General

Guns

The Ticonderoga-class are armed with two 127mm/54 Mark 45 cannons, 2 Phalanx CIWS, 2x 25mm Mark 38 machine gun system and 2-4 12.7mm M2 Browning Machine guns.

Missiles

The Ticonderoga-class as shown in the movie are equipped 122 Mark 41 VLS cells that can launch a variety of missiles, most notably the BGM-109 Tomahawk, and 8 × RGM-84 Harpoon missiles.[2] The missiles were not used during the Tasman Sea battle.

Torpedoes

The Ticonderoga-class had 6 324mm torpedo tubes in 2 launchers. They were left unused in any of the movies.

Depth charges

In Godzilla vs Kong, the Ticonderoga-class cruisers that were part of Kong's escort group had depth charges mounted on both ends of the ships. These were likely based on the Hedgehog Anti-Submarine Mortars used during World War II up to around the end of the cold war.

Trivia

  • Almost every Ticonderoga-class cruiser in Godzilla vs. Kong bears a fictitious hull number (38, 39, 85, and 89). The real range of hull numbers for ships of this class is 47 to 73.[3] The only exception is the USS Lake Champlain (CG-57), which can be seen in the background of Godzilla and Kong's fight atop a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
    • CG-38 was taken by USS Virginia (CGN-38)
    • CG-39 was taken by USS Texas (CGN-39)
    • CG-85 and CG-89 do not exist.
