Scope for miscellaneous films

I was curious is there any western films that could apply under the

"Include a giant monster and share a director, special effects director, screenwriter, or suitmaker with the Godzilla or Gamera series. Assistant positions do not count."

Les (talkcontribs)

Well, we approved Monsters because of Gareth Edwards, but I don't think there's anything else obvious. You also have to consider that a lot gets filtered out by the existence of wikis dedicated to certain franchises, which was by design. It'd be kind of silly to cover Independence Day: Resurgence, for example.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

i mean obviously for nothing with its own dedicated and well written wiki (but i would check if any wiki is actually up to date and not vandalized) but Nothing in the rules really specified it had to be specifically Japanese and i was wondering if anything related to G98 was counted for

doubt it but it made me think about Outlander and Eight Legged Freaks (neither not too big but monsters in both still dwarf humans) but I'm not sure if those share those specific staff roles with anyone on G98 since they had some sort of staff connection or any of the MonsterVerse films for that matter

also we cover The Cat, Jellyfish Eyes and eventually Both Zebraman films i don't think anything's too silly at this point.

Les (talkcontribs)

Roland Emmerich was only an executive producer of Eight Legged Freaks, so that one doesn't count. I'd never heard of Outlander but, assuming you're talking about the 2008 movie, I didn't see anyone I recognize in the IMDb credits.

I'm pretty sure we went through the G98 & Monsterverse writers and directors when we wrote that rule. But I guess it's always possible we missed something.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

did you guys check for shared screenwriters and effects directors?

Les (talkcontribs)

Well SFX director can basically be thrown out of the window because that's a uniquely Japanese position. Most of these movies use CGI and therefore have a VFX supervisor.

For writers: Dean Devlin has only written five movies besides GODZILLA and the only one I'm aware of having a giant monster is Independence Day: Resurgence; Max Borenstein hasn't written any monster movies that aren't in the Monsterverse; Derek Connolly (KSI cowriter) wrote two of the Jurassic World movies and Detective Pikachu but those have wikis, and the monsters in Monster Trucks don't sound to be giant; any non-MV movies Michael Dougherty, Eric Pearson, or Jeremy Slater may've written with monsters in them belong to a bigger franchise; and Zach Shields hasn't written any non-MV monster movies.

The biggest question marks left are Eric Pearson, Terry Rossio, and Simon Barrett. I'm not familiar enough with the movies in their filmographies to say.

The monsters in monster trucks are bigger than humans and the size of a truck but im not advocating for it

But do vfx supervisors count?

Les (talkcontribs)

As it's worded currently, no. We've discussed feelings about VFX supes, but allowing them would open up a can of worms we're not ready for right now.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

So why are vfx seen as lesser than pratical?

Les (talkcontribs)

Tokusatsu is the heart of the website. But it's not really even a practical FX bias so much as SFX directors being historically associated with kaiju eiga. VFX is everywhere in Hollywood and not exclusive to monsters, whereas SFX directors were involved in far more monster movies than other kinds. It's a lot easier of a thing to draw rules around.
