The Lake possibly viable?

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

i was recently told that apparently the director of the Lake cited both Godzilla and King Kong as an influence on the film

could this mean the film is possibly viable now?

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

For starters, we'd need a source for that. I suppose I should actually watch it one of these days - I've just been putting it off since I've heard it's a real stinker.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

reading the actual link it seems the person who told me didn't actually read the whole thing in context

however i guess i could bring up another Thai monster movie that was rejected in the past but the new scope rules might can take another look

Garuda 2004

i recall seeing a now deleted youtube vid that i think was taken from the tokyo shock dvd where the director himself said Godzilla directly was an influence on the film (Rule 2?)

but i am aware the Monster is only a couple meters taller than a human although its wingspan when fully outstretched is pretty tall but the director himself considers the film to be a giant monster film.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

I've seen it; has nothing to do with Godzilla.

Kaiju No. 14 (talkcontribs)

I noticed the Tokyo Shock DVD itself says Garuda was inspired by Godzilla.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

Not sure if this was noticed but if it flat out says it's inspired by godzilla i think looking into it more should be considered.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

i have too but i recall seeing a video of behind the scenes thing that i can no longer find of director himself outright said godzilla was an influence that seems a little disregarding what the second rule on the scope for misc said.

"Include a giant monster and demonstrate significant influence from or on the Godzilla, King Kong, and/or Gamera series, beyond the mere presence of a giant monster."

so why is it ok when one film (cloverfield for example) says its an influence but not this one?

that seems kind of dismissive to what the director himself said and I'm not sure who are we to say its not if the man himself said it if memory serves correctly.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

"[S]ignificant influence [...] beyond the mere presence of a giant monster."

Cloverfield and the original Godzilla both use giant monsters to evoke then-recent attacks that had profound effects on their countries of origin (9/11 and Allied bombings during World War II). The Abrams quote is useful in confirming that the filmmakers had Godzilla on their minds, but this parallel is much more significant.

I'm willing to listen to whatever the director said, but I'm extremely skeptical. Based on the film alone, Garuda has a much weaker case than anything else we've let in under this rule. (Aside from Colossal, which has an exceedingly weird backstory.)

Kaiju No. 14 (talkcontribs)

Garuda has a monster vs. military battle which demonstrates influence from Toho's series. So I'd classify that as the influence beyond the giant monster that the film has

Les (talkcontribs)

I personally do not find that very compelling. Of course the military would respond to a giant monster attack. That's a cliche in all monster movies.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

The monster does get into conflict with helicopters but i still think we need to find the exact quotes from the director first.

DVD copy with the info and interviews coming in a few days, along with full scans of the Manuel likely but the interview will be excavated first
