Transforming Mechagodzilla (合体メカゴジラ,   Gattai Mekagojira, lit. Union Mechagodzilla) is an unmade Toho mecha that would have appeared in an early draft for the 1993 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II.

Design

The Transforming Mechagodzilla's appearance is reminiscent of both the Showa Mechagodzilla and the final design of the Heisei Mechagodzilla, with the addition of being able to split into seven different ships.[1] Eventually, this was reduced to just two vehicles, with Mechagodzilla's upper body becoming a jet, and its lower body becoming a tank.[2] This feature was reused, albeit heavily toned down through the use of the Garuda and Mechagodzilla combining to create Super Mechagodzilla in the final film, and also inspired MOGUERA being able to split into the Land Moguera and Star Falcon for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.

History

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (early drafts)

The Transforming Mechagodzilla's role was nearly identical to the normal Heisei Mechagodzilla's role in the finished film, however one of its individual vehicle forms would have battled two pteranodons early in the film on Adonoa Island. This Mechagodzilla would have successfully killed both Godzilla and Rodan later in the movie, but the Garuda would be destroyed and explode, causing Godzilla to be revived by the released radiation and destroy Mechagodzilla.[3]

Trivia

  • Transforming Mechagodzilla's transformation ability is reminiscent of the mecha King Joe from Tsuburaya Productions' Ultra Series, which separates into a set of four ships that can then reassemble into King Joe to battle opponents.
  • The Kaiju Guide entry for Super Mechagodzilla in the PlayStation 3 and 4 Godzilla game references Transforming Mechagodzilla.
  • The early artwork poster for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II drawn by Noriyoshi Ohrai features the Transforming Mechagodzilla.[2] This is notable, in that it is one of the few instances of an unmade kaiju or unused design for a kaiju appearing in a piece of official media for the completed product. Ohrai's depiction of Transforming Mechagodzilla is the same as the artwork for the mecha created by Shinji Nishikawa.
  • As part of their new Tamashii MIX subline of S.H. MonsterArts figures, Tamashii Nations created a figure of the Transforming Mechagodzilla under the name "Mechagodzilla (Ohrai Noriyoshi Poster Ver.)" (メカゴジラ(生頼範義ポスターver。),   Mekagojira Ōrai Noriyoshi Posutā Bājon). As the Tamashii MIX subline features figures with the ability to transform, this figure is able to split apart into different vehicles as originally envisioned.
  • This Mechagodzilla's design inspired the new Mechagodzilla design created for the character's appearance in the 2018 Ready Player One film adaptation.[4]
