The Last Dinosaur

A Triceratops in The Last Dinosaur

After stealing the Polar-Borer, the Tyrannosaurus rex tried to bury it in a cave near its lair. In the process, it awakened a Triceratops sleeping underground, who engaged it in a vicious battle. The Triceratops drew first blood, stabbing the Tyrannosaurus' chest with its horns and biting its leg. The Tyrannosaurus eventually gained the upper hand by throwing the Triceratops to the ground, then sinking its sharp claws into its enemy's stomach. Its powerful jaws delivered the final, fatal blow.

Heisei era

Rebirth of Mothra 3

As Rainbow Mothra arrived in the Late Cretaceous Period, a Tyrannosaurus rex pursued a herd of Triceratopses nearby. As it bit into a straggler's neck, Cretaceous King Ghidorah seized it in his central head. Before he could abduct the Triceratops, Rainbow Mothra made his presence known with a volley of Cross Heat Rainbow Lasers.

After Rainbow Mothra severed part of Cretaceous King Ghidorah's tail with another Cross Heat Rainbow Laser, a Triceratops and a Tyrannosaurus observed the appendage as it burrowed underground and stared at each other in concern.

The Mighty Kong

A Triceratops attacking Jack Driscoll in The Mighty Kong

As Jack Driscoll followed King Kong and the captured Ann Darrow, a Triceratops charged at him, smashing itself against the side of the path he was traversing. Jack stumbled down the hill and found himself face-to-face with the dinosaur, but used a gas bomb to knock it out before it could charge again. Barely breaking stride, he continued his quest.

Abilities

Horns

The Triceratops' stout, tank-like build made them formidable foes, especially in conjunction with their three horns, which could be used as weapons against attackers.

Weaknesses

The 1932 novelization of King Kong suggests that the Triceratopses on Skull Island have very poor eyesight.[2] Furthermore, Carl Denham refers to them as "something like a dinosaur," and refers to them as having underdeveloped forelimbs, which is roughly in-line with then-contemporary reconstructions of the animal. King Kong (1932)

A population of Triceratopses lived on Skull Island, three of which engaged Kong while crossing a large asphalt flat. While they did outnumber him, Kong began to throw chunks of hardened asphalt and heavily wound the three Triceratopses. While fleeing their attacker, two of them became stuck in wet asphalt and began slowly sinking into it, unable to escape, until they suffocated in the asphalt. The third and final Triceratops was wounded and enraged, and ran around the area in pain from a broken horn before turning and charging into the jungle after a group of sailors from the Wanderer, apparently unable to distinguish them from his attacker. It chased the men into the bush, where it gored one of them to death on its nose horn, but struggled to catch up to the rest as it plodded through the thick foliage. It emerged at last before a chasm bridged by a log, and the sailors made their way across to try and escape, but Kong returned from the other side. Finally spotting the one responsible for wounding him, the Triceratops entered a roaring match with Kong, who shook the sailors off before throwing the log into the pit. He then ran away to battle a Meat-Eater. Utterly ignored by Kong, the Triceratops eventually walked away into the jungle.

"King Kong" (The Mystery Magazine)

A particularly unintelligent Triceratops stood motionless at one end of a ravine bridged by a log, apparently unaware of any humans in the vicinity. Within minutes there were no humans to be aware of, as Kong had thrown them all into the pit.

Trivia

  • A herd of Triceratopses were included in the 1996 draft of Peter Jackson's King Kong film. The script had a trio of them attack Carl Denham's group of sailors in retaliation for the group killing a member of their herd.
