The Type 79 Jyu-MAT (79式対舟艇対戦車誘導弾,   79-shiki tai-shūtei tai-sensha yūdō-dan) is a Japanese missile system designed by Defense Agency Technical Research and Development Institute and manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries with Daicel providing the missiles flight motors and NEC manufacturing the computerized sight unit on the launcher. They were used by the JSDF to aid Gamera in his battle with the Mother Legion in the 1996 film Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion.

Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion

With the Soldier Legion distracted by a diversion, Gamera was able to fight the Mother Legion in a one on one battle without fear of being swarmed by her army. However the Legion Queen was proving to be nigh invulnerable even without her offspring as her armored body allowed her to shrug off most of the JSDF's attacks earlier and Gamera wasn't faring much better as the Mother Legion would use the ten Interference Wave Claws that crowned her head to create an electromagnetic barrier that would trap Gamera's Plasma Fireballs and break them down harmlessly in front of her face.

After breaking through several of the defense lines put in place to keep the alien from invading Tokyo, despite Gamera's attempts to slow her down, a decision was made to aid Gamera in combating the space monster. Several Type 79 Jyu-MAT were set up further ahead of the battling monsters, firing from several directions. Both monsters were caught completely off guard with Gamera looking on in surprise by the welcomed help and the Mother Legion was unable to keep up with all the missiles flanking her from several sides in such a short amount of time, only managing to deflect some of them by using her electromagnetic barrier to make them malfunction and veer off course but the rest still managed to hit her, destroying four of her Interference Wave Claws.

This severally weakened her electromagnetic barrier, with a follow up fireball from Gamera only being partially blocked as her shield did shrink it via breaking it down but not before it could explode, causing her to shake her head in discomfort or pain. With her defenses down the creature was now more vulnerable to Gamera's plasma based attacks and Gamera could destroy her nasal horn.

Mechanisms

The Type 79 Jyu-MAT is a wire guided SACLOS (Semi-automatic command to line of sight) anti-tank missile. After being ejected a safe distance from it's container via a solid rocket motor, the missile's flight motor ignites and it's eight fins, four in two sets, pop out, reaching cruising speeds of up to 200 meters per second. A guidance wire connecting the missile and it's launcher allows the launcher to send signals to the missile, giving the gunner the ability steer it in mid-flight, using a xenon lamp on the back of the missile to help calculate any corrections that need to be made if it detects the missile is no longer in line of sight with the target. The weapon can also be fired remotely up to 50 meters away from the system while it's mounted on a tripod as well as be mounted on several type of vehicles.

The missile can be armed with an anti-tank Shaped charge warhead with an impact-fuze to detonate as soon as it hits a target. The missile tip is hallow with a metal cone lining the cavity walls called a conical liner that has it's cone tip facing the explosives and the cone opening facing the missile tip. When the central detonator triggers the explosive in the back of the missile it forces the conical liner towards the narrow hallow missile tip. This results in the metal cone deforming, inverting and squeezing out as a high-velocity superplastic jet of hypersonic metal particles, working as kinetic weapon capable of punching through armor in a phenomenon known as Munroe Effect or the Neumann Effect. The byproduct of this process can have a secondary incendiary effect as it generates a lot of heat. Alternatively the missiles can be semi-armour piercing fragmentation warhead with a delayed-action fuze, exploding after the missile has pierced into the target and breaking into many deadly high velocity metal fragments upon detonation.

Trivia

  • The weapon is also known as the KAM-9.[1]
  • The weapon can also be armed with semi-armour piercing fragmentation warheads. Such missiles are used for soft unarmored or lightly armored landing craft and ships. It is unlikely any of them were used against the heavily armored Mother Legion and that rather all missiles fired at her were shaped charge warheads.[1]
