Lord Tsuchimikado (土御門様/ツチミカド様/つちみかどさま,
Tsuchimikadosama
)
is a yokai that appeared in the 2014 novelization, Koujin, and the 2018 TV drama, Koujin.

Design

Although its real size was never given, it is said to be as big as "a small mountain" and easily brings down a fortress in the first form and somewhat smaller in the later forms.

Novelization

Original form somewhat resembles a giant salamander or eye-less animals regarding its head while humanity compared it to a toad, snake, and a lizard albeit lacking eyes and having two tails.

Original and second forms completely lacks eyes, and its skin is extremely hardened with slimy substances. Second and third forms have vivid scales.

After losing one of its tails and tongue, it evolved into a bipedal form resembling certain species of reptiles or amphibians, or dinosaurs with smaller arms. Its blood transforms its skin into vivid scales.

Third form more resembles a human except for its head which strongly resembles that of a snake with vivid eyes. Its state is largely affected by which of Akane's spirit or Danjô Soya's spirit is dominant over the other; when the former is dominant, it is pure white and has smoother skin and black eyes, and when the latter is dominant, its eye bursts, and it has black scales.

Fourth Form, with influences from Akane, resembles more like a human female.

TV Drama

The most notable differences from the original novelization is to have multiple eyes and legs and tongues and rib bones like projections, and its skin depiction and coloration. This version resembles a crocodile in general and also has elongated fangs on lower jaw like that of Gamera. This version has a singled, thick and wide finned tail instead of tentacle like two tails (it was depicted as a whale or fish like tail in a votive picture).

In general, this incarnation of the monster resembles the second form of Godzilla in 2016 film and Dodomeki (百々目,
Dodomeki
)
, a yokai known in Japan.

Personality

It irrationally attacks and prey on humans regardless of being full or not. When being full, it emits pellets like that of Gyaos.

Incarnation in TV Drama is very different from what was in the novelization. There has been a legend being believed by some people that Lord Tsuchimikado is a respected guardian to devour demons.

Origins

It was created to protect a certain nation, but it became useless because war didn't occur. But the creature wasn't in the full shape at that time. 100 Years after the Battle of Sekigahara (which makes the event presumably in A.D.1700), it suddenly awoke by consuming chi of the mountains for a century. It caused havoc and targeted humanity including the people it supposed to protect. Since its body was created from dark incantations, its sliced body parts turned into black ashes.

Novelization

Other than the dark magic, the monster absorbed chi of the mountain for many years, and it became into a monster after many years from its initial state as just like a clod of earth.

TV Drama

While the animals used to create the monster was never specified, many corpses of toads and lizards and many voluntary sacrifices by a certain tribe were mentioned in this version.

Roar

Other than roaring, it occasionally "snores" in the novelization.
