Development

On May 11, 2012, Punch Drunk Critics reported a rumor that director Paul W. S. Anderson expressed his desire to direct a film adaption of the Monster Hunter video game franchise. On September 15, 2016, during Tokyo Game Show, Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto announced that a live-action Hollywood adaption of Monster Hunter was in development with details kept under wraps. Two months later, Deadline reported that director Paul W. S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt, who both previously adapted Capcom's Resident Evil series, announced that after five years of discussion with Capcom, they had obtained the rights to produce the film adaption of Monster Hunter. Anderson has stated he was drawn to the franchise not only because of its established popularity but also the "incredibly beautiful, immersive world they've created", expressing interest in wanting to turn it into a cinematic universe. Anderson already penned a script involving an American everyman dragged into a parallel universe set in the world of Monster Hunter, learning to fight monsters as well as dealing with a situation of monsters crossing over and appearing on Earth including a final climatic battle at Los Angeles International Airport".

Later in October 15, 2020, Anderson elaborated more details of the early script which was based on a 2009 pitch with the movie aiming for a young adult audience akin to other popular films at the time such as Harry Potter, Twilight and Percy Jackson. The draft had a similar premise to the Matrix, with characters from the Monster Hunter world coming to our world looking for “The One”, who ends up being a “bullied, quite clumsy” 16-year-old boy named Lucas. This version of the script indicated that monsters and dragons from various mythologies and cultures around the world are infact monsters from the Monster Hunter realm and that each time this happened, a hero would emerge to dispatch the monsters with Lucas chosen to be the next one. However, this version would go unproduced with Anderson stating “By the time I came back to Monster Hunter, 'young adult' was kind of buried six feet underground with a stake through its heart. Nobody wanted to make young adult. The days of Twilight were over. It's like, ‘No, no more young adults,’ and I'm like, ‘Oh, well, I better change that then." While this version would go ultimately unproduced visual effects company Mr. X would upload a 2017 effects reel which featured brief footage based on this version of the script featuring the monsters Rathalos and Gore Magala battling inside a mall. Eventually, a new script would be greenlit, inspired by films such as Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and James Cameron's Avatar.

On May 21, 2017, Variety.com reports German film production and distribution company Constantin Film announced they are producing the film and aimed for production in late 2017 to 2018. On May 11, 2018. Variety announced Milla Jovovich was set to star as the film's lead. On September 25, 2018, Clifford "T.I." Harris and Ron Perlman were announced to costar alongside Tony Jaa, who was announced as "the Hunter". Along with Perlman’s Admiral character, Tony Jaa's hunter is based on characters that appear in the 2018 videogame wp:Monster_Hunter:_World. Harris is set to portray Link, a sniper in Jovovich's then-unnamed character's military team. On October 01, 2018, Actor Diego Boneta was announced to join the cast as well, playing another character in the military. His character was later identified as Sergeant Marshall, a communications specialist.

On October 4, 2018 ,The Hollywood reporter reports alongside Constantin Film, Toho will co-finance the video game adaptation and distribute it in Japan. Anderson, in a interview with Slashfilm, would later confirm that another character from Monster Hunter: World, The Handler, is set to appear and that the monsters set to appear in the film all originate from the games, with none of them being original creations.
